Cousin Kevin was played by Paul Nicholas, another (sort of) star who appeared in the movie. He started as lead vocalist in an early 1960s UK band called Paul Dean and the Dreamers before getting noticed by Screaming Lord Sutch, who brought him into his own band, The Savages. Sutch's act was, basically, an early version of what Alice Cooper would be doing several years later. By 1965, switching from the Paul Dean name to just Oscar, he released a few singles, none of which sold well. The second was a song written by The Who's Pete Townshend called Join My Gang. He later got into the theatre and starred in, among other productions, Jesus Christ Superstar and the lead role in a UK production of Grease. He also started into music management, taking on The Sweet as one of his signings. The Sweet would become internationally famous with a number of singles, including Ballroom Blitz. It was during this time that he appeared in Tommy, due in large part from his friendship with Pete Townshend as well as his acting ability.
@@AlesPickar Thank you, I was going to ask if anyone knew who that was. I kept thinking it must've been a member of the Who but it didn't look or sound enough like any of them. I've wondered that one for years.
Ken Russell directed the movie and was a great British director who was in a very psychedelic stage in his movie making. Had made a number of biographies about artists composers and writers for BBC and film and then provocative movies like this or Lizst afterward with Roger Daltrey the Who's singer who plays Tommy grown here.
In the Marilyn Monroe church scene, that was Eric Clapton, singing & playing guitar. And the guy holding the Marilyn Monroe star in front of the congregation members, while they're taking communion, is Arthur Brown (from The Crazy World Of Arthur Brown, best known for "Fire"). Also, Uncle Ernie is played by The Who's drummer, Keith Moon.
Actually, it's The Who with Eric Clapton singing. Roger Daltrey is the singer for The Who and is playing adult Tommy. He was a pretty good actor for a musician. He did a couple pretty good movies. "The Legacy" from, like, 1978 and "McVicar", an English film from, I think, the early 80s. Probably other stuff, too. Great job, guys!
I saw this in the theater when it came out at the ripe age of 11. I became a pinball (and video game) wizard. Tina Turner freaked me out back then. That shit was freaky to this 11 year old! But it is one of my favorite parts of the movie now. I haven't seen it in ages. Thanks for the trip down memory lane. Can't wait for the rest!
@@paulpuerling9504 The original release of "Tommy" used a sound system devised by sound engineer John Mosely called "Quintaphonic Sound", five-channel surround sound.
I was about 8 or 9 when I saw it. It was the loudest movie I'd seen, and the Acid Queen, and some of the scenes with the father burning up in the plane were terrifying. Also the kick into Sally Simpson's face had a bit of impact at that age.
I remember you saying, reacting to the album,"He's an ahole"🤣🤣 Well, now you saw it,cousin Kevin really is one. Tina's ACID QUEEN is fabulous, she made it ,kinda, her song. There is a live performance of The Who on UA-cam, doing TOMMY. Patty Labelle does the part of the ACID QUEEN, absolutely doing a great job. Phil Collins doing a verry dirty UNCLE ERNIE on this show too. Thanks guys, loved this one. 😁👍👊
Rod Stewart was the original choice to play the Pinball Wizard but Elton suggested that it would be a bad move. However, they've remained friends. At the time the movie came out, Elton was at his absolute peak and when I saw this in a theater in 1975, there was actually some applause when he popped up on screen. The apathy/nastiness of Ann-Margret (Tommy's mother) was apparently good enough to get her an Oscar nomination.
Marilyn Monroe represented the worship of an iconic woman as in The Virgin Mary. So Tommy is taken unsuccessfully to try religion and then drugs. Tina is fantastic and there is a clip on UA-cam of her and Ann Margret singing Proud Mary together
Not sure if you caught this, or not but Tommy is played by Roger Daltry, the lead singer for The Who. Drummer Keith Moon is the disturbing Uncle Ernie. Thanks again for doing this, I mean I know it wasn't my request, but sure glad you did it!
Must be three if not four decades since last I watched this movie front to back. I'm finding it interesting viewing now from an aged prospective. Still think Ken Russell has great panache for conceptualized abstract symbolism's like a statue of Marylin Monroe acting as a religious figure instead of an actual known religious figure. In that way no actual religion can feel offended (not that that was in consideration for any artistic choice). Pinball fandom treated like sports where a young guy with limited possibilities can ascend financially. A lot of symbolism's for the sake of symbolism too. I've also watched Ken Russell's other popular 'Litzomania', also with Roger Daltry. As directors who like to tell tall tales go, Ken Russell is wild!
Yes it's a bit of a tough watch sometimes, Ken Russell's vision was interesting to say the least, he was a great film maker. I Remember the Premier at Leicester square and watched it in the same theatre with the quad sound. Thoughts then maybe different to nearly 50 years later. Great to see your reactions. Doubt if it would be made like that now 😢
Roger Daltry plays Tommy and began an occasional acting career. Pete Townshend produced all the music, except Pinball Wizard. Though The Who is backing Elton in thw film, the song was recorded by Elton and his full band and produced by his producer. It became a hit single. The Acid Queen fetures Faces drummer Kenny Jones. Who would later replace the laye Keith Moon in The Who, and Faces guitarist Ron Wood shoetly before joining The Rolling Stones.
Please elaborate on what you mean. Pinball Wizard was written by Pete Townsend, recorded and released in 1969's Tommy album by The Who. It was 1975 when Elton sang it in this film and released a cover for himself.
@mgordon1100 In the film, Pete produced all the music, with me.bets of The Who playing on most tracks. Pinball Wizard was performed solely by Elton and his band and was produced by Gus Dudgeon.
So aggravating sick, and sad. I'd never seen it. I did hear it was disturbing. It was convenient for mother and step father to have him deaf dumb and blind so he couldn't report them for murdering his father. Then after all the abuse they exploited his gaming skills for their benefit. Suddenly he's important for them.
Tommy and his family are at a Evangelical Meeting to heal the sick and the lame. Marilyn Monroe is the deity. Eric Clapton ( the guitarist) is the grifting preacher..
I remember it being fine on VHS but then on DVD they added the 5.1 option and if your system wasn't 5.1 compatible it was better to stick with 2.0 otherwise you got all kinds of dynamic drop outs and other issues. But if you stuck with 2.0 it was fine. This sounds like they ripped the 5.1 audio track and uploaded it to a platform that can't really handle/decode it.
No one else could have played The Acid Queen in my opinion....Tina was brilliant. 🔥🔥🔥
I have watched this movie in every state of mind humanly possible. Trust me, the best is Sober. Sober allows you to truly appreciate the artistry.

Tina continued to sing Acid Queen at her concerts the rest of her career
As well she should. After this, it was her song anyway.

And his manic preacher was Arthur Brown.
