    The Classic SG For Every Generation, Now in Custom Colors
    The SG Standard ‘61 returns to the classic design that made it relevant, played, and loved -- shaping sound across generations and genres of music. And now it‘s available in custom colors.
    In 1961, the Les Paul™ model was put on hiatus, and an all-new design evolved into what is today known as the SG™ or “solid guitar.” The Gibson SG Standard ‘61 retains the styling of the original featuring a SlimTaper™ mahogany neck and a bound rosewood fingerboard. The mahogany body features deeply sculpted body scarfing, a 5-ply teardrop pickguard, and a 22nd-fret neck joint. The nickel-plated hardware includes a classic-style Tune-O-Matic™ bridge and Keystone tuners. The pickups are 60s Burstbucker™ humbuckers™ for a classic voice with added power and top end. Controls feature audio taper potentiometers and Orange Drop® capacitors. A hardshell case is also included.

    I’ve owned a les paul custom since the late 80s. Recently bought an SG classic. No contest. The higher fret access and lighter weight make it easier to play live. LP is the king for fat power chords but the leads are just nicer on the sg. Love thr classic cherry red. It’s like a butterscotch tele or LP burst- classic rock look

    I had a Gibson USA 61 Standard. I loved it. Then I got a Gibson Custom Shop 64 VOS and realized it is so much better.

      What about the CS makes it better? I'm torn between a 61 standard and a pelham blue 61 CS. I know the 64's are a little different.

    I have the same one... '61 Standard in Silver Mist... it really is an awesome guitar. The only thing I didn't like is the stock vintage tuners. They're not smooth and feel cheap so I added real Kluson revolution nickel keystone tuners on mine. The 19:1 ratio is a huge upgrade and the nickel tuners look great with the silver mist finish. I also replaced the lightweight aluminum stop bar with a nickel Zamak Tone Pros locking one for more weight and sustain. Mine was only 6 lbs 5 ounces so I also wanted to balance the body better with the added metal Keystone tuners. I also added a metal chrome 3 way toggle switch to round out the hardware. The guitar resonates ands sustains even better with the new tailpiece and tuners. The '61 Burstbuckers are great. The A5 magnets really cut. It can even do metal. I highly recommend this guitar over the regular SG Standard with the large batwing. Those aren't handwired like the '61 and use a PCB. If you're worried about the '61 neck being "thin"... it is not. It's just not as rounded as the regular Standard.

      Also... I'm not a fan of the 490's on the regular SG Standard. IMO, the '60's Burstbuckers destroy them.

      I can get a normal standard and put in some real nice pickups and a harness for less then this new

    • @Darth.Shredder
      @Darth.Shredder 3 місяці тому +3

      @@Coolbeans1492 The normal Standard is only $200 less than the '61. What kind of "real nice" pickups and harness were you planning to get for less than $200? Even if you did, you'd end up spending the same amount... plus the regular Standard doesn't come with a hardshell case which is another $200 if you wanted one. So, at best, you'll end up paying the same or $200 more if you wanted the hardshell case. lol You'd also have the large pickguard, which you may like but I prefer the small one. Good luck!

      @@Darth.Shredder you realize in Canada these custom colours are pushing 3k? A standard even with the colours is pushing 2500 max and they still go for around 2300 pretty easily. I can easily put pickups and a harness in it for considerably less.

    7lbs and up seems to be the sweet spot for balance. Much lighter, and the neck dive comes into play. I just got the TV version, I love it. And I’m not an “SG guy”.

      I saw the translucent teal 61 for 1599 on sale at Guitar center and grabbed it. I’m not an sg guy either. I prefer a fat neck. But I wanted to try something “faster” with low action. I love it. It’s honestly blown me away.

      Has your opinion changed about neck dive on your SG? Does it still feel stable? Has it gotten annoying? Did you forget that SG's are known to have neck dive? I'm considering buying one of these in TV Yellow as well. I've still got my eye on a Les Paul as well.

    I love SGs. This one looks great in the Silver Mist finish, but I like all the custom colors-I think my favorite is the TV Yellow. My first Gibson was an SG Standard that I bought new in 1967-dark Cherry, almost burgundy, with the batwing pickguard. I like the earlier small pickguard ones better-I’m glad they’ve gone back to that. Mine also had a narrow nut width, as did a ‘65 that I had in the mid ‘80s. I prefer the wider nut width myself, which I have on my 2002 SG Supreme, which is the best SG I’ve ever had. I’m still considering one of these custom-color ones, though! You can never have too many SGs or Telecasters, am I right! 15:50

    Two of my SG’s have batwing pickguards, and my 89 special has no guard at all. I really need a small guard for my 4th the gothic was my main for 20 years but it got beat up, I’m rockin a standard most of the time these days

      @@rickschmitz6438 These do not sound like garbage, I got a 61 reissue (normal stop bar) that was a demo from sweetwater and its a gorgeous guitar, great fret work, plays well, and the pickups sound great and the wiring is done well. Sound is subjective because it depends on what you're going for and whether or not low-ish output Alnico V's work for that is up to you and your rig but this thing is definitely a rock and roll machine.
