Reptile Thermostats| Dimming vs Pulse and When To Use!

- Reptile thermostats can be unnecessarily complex. With many of the professional models harboring abilities such as running your desired heat sources on "dimming" an d"pulse proportional" modes. The big time questions are: "What type of heat source is best for these modes?" and "what is the safest and most appropriate ways to use these modes?" when pertaining to reptile care.
This video covers the most common heating elements used with a thermostat on dimming, and a thermostat when running pulse.

Would you recommend these for a blue tongue skink enclosure with basking bulbs or not needed ?
You “could” use a HerpStat on a basking lamp.
But the constant dimming/undimmimg of the lamp may bother your skink.
In your case. It may be easier to use a lower wattage bulb that can be run at full power.
@@AlexsAgamids oh gotcha so no really worth it for a basking bulb? What about using one for a night bulb since in the winter my house stays around 55 to 60 and wanted to add a ceramic heat emitter or one of the deep dome

@leo2o915 for a ceramic heater, absolutely!
You could put the ceramic heater in the middle of the cage and set the stat to “80” and then program the night drop to “70” for the skink.
That way your basking bulb will run all the time for a basking spot, then the thermostat will turn the CHE on/off as needed to keep your desired daytime high/nighttime temp.

So I do have a question for you so I want to be able to have my heat and lighting to turn on and off on its own how do I make that work if the heat and lighting is plugged into the Herpstat?
If you’re using a HerpStat. You’ll want to enable the “night drop” function.
This way you can have the heat turn off at night.
Then on a different output, you’ll want to have that run on “output mode: lighting” and then have the on/off time set to the same start/end time as your night drop for the heat source.
Hi, I really appreciated your video, because before I didn’t understand the difference. But I have a question considering this: I want to incubate leopard gecko eggs with a DIY incubator, which would require a thermostat. But I can't decide between the Habistat Pulse proportional classic and the Habistat dimming thermostat; Which of the two would be better for incubation, and could I theoretically use both? I would use a heating stone; I used this method last year but I had a cheap on/off Thermostat which stopped working so I lost all my eggs, so I won’t start this with an on/off.
If you have an incubator. Use a thermostat that is pulse proportional.
I have an ars 9706 for my billsnakes and have always debated placing the probe in the enclosure or on the heating element under the enclosure at the middle level (extremely tight/ little room). Which do you do for your ars racks?
If you’re using the 9706 model by ARS, I’d suggest placing the probe directly inside the tub (drill a small hole in the middle shelf and then secure the probe to the bottom of the tub. )

@@AlexsAgamids There’s just enough gap between the tub and the top that you can squeeze a probe through and attach to the bottom. Thanks for the advice!

Yes. One output per each enclosure heating element. So if you have one heating element per enclosure: you can run six enclosures.
Ok I'm a little confused on the ve thermostat. It sounds like you said at the start to run the rhp on pulse then towards the end said a single heat panel on dim. I have the ve200 and a 80w ve rhp on my boa enclosure. Pulse or dim? I have everything dialed in on my racks but the rhp is different lol
If you’re using a VE thermostat with a VE brand of heat panel. Then you’ll want to run your stat on pulse.
My apologizes if I didn’t clarify enough at the start of the video.

@AlexsAgamids awesome thank you! That's what I have and the setting I'm using and right at the end of the video I thought you said rhp with dim.

At the and I was referring to different thermostat brands and heat panel brands.
For example: ProHeat Panela by ProProducts can be run using dimming OR pulse. If you were using a HerpStat, then per the HerpStat manual: dimming is their “best” setting so therefore you’d use dimming with a HerpStat on a ProHeat panel.
Whereas if I had a ProHeat panel and a VE stat. I’d run it on pulse since VE stats are designed to run more effectively on the pulse proportional mode with lightless heat sources (per the VE manual)

I had a question, how much do you feed Ozzie a day? Like roughly how many dubia roaches/crickets/nightcrawlers (or whatever you feed him) do you offer? I'm asking because I've heard of the five minute rule where you let them eat as much as they can for five minutes but my water dragon would choke from that. So I'm trying to get a number of how many bugs you'd give him. Thanks!
Good question!
I try to aim and feed my adult water dragons the equivalent of 1-2 adult roaches daily (or a similar sized feeder in the equivalent quantity: ex. 2-3 super worms, 1-2 earthworms, half a dozen crickets)
The concept of the "5 Minute Rule" is scary since it lets the lizards gorge themselves. Prolonged excessive feeding will more than likely result in gout, obesity, and other dietary issues.
Smaller, leaner/low fat meals on a more frequent basis seems to be the way to go for this species!

What would you use for the Arcidia Heat Projector?
@nickritz4740 I’d suggest using a dimming thermostat on any of Arcadia’s Deep Heat Projectors.
(Any of the HerpStat models by Spyder Robotics or any models that are VE - 200/300 for Vivarium Electronics thermostats. )
I'm going to get a crested gecko in a couple of months. I already set up a bioactive enclosure for it. I live in a cold house so it's around 55 at the coldest. In the enclosure I've been tracking it with a digital thermometer and it's around 60 degrees. I know they like a hot spot in the high 70's. I need a small simple heating source, do I need something this complex or can I get away with one of those simple zoo med thermostats, where it shuts on n off when it reaches the proper temperature?
I’d say it really depends on your budget.
Crested geckos are pretty hardy lizards, so a simple on/off thermostat will probably work just fine. Especially given your enclosure is 55 gallons, so in the event the heat source was to get TOO warm, the gecko has a lot of room to distance itself.
However, if you’ve got the money on hand to purchase a more precise thermostat: then go for it!
@@AlexsAgamids I meant the temperature in my house at it's coldest is 55F the enclosure I have is 30 gallons. Still pretty big. I just got the zoomed reptitemp digital thermometer along with a 60W CHE I set the temp in that area for 78 degrees and it seems to be working. At the bottom of the tank it's around 62 and up top around 78. Plus he's got uvb and plenty of hides and cover if he needs them.
Sounds like a good setup then!!!

Hey I have the herpstat 2 I was wondering do you think it’s safe to run 2 RHP on it?
As long as each heat panel is on its own output. Then it’ll be safe to do!
Make sure you don’t have two heat panels plugged into the same output though!
@@AlexsAgamids thanks for the quick response, I have another question, I have a Pro RHP and a VE RHP. Should I run them both on the dimming setting? I got them both in a 8 ft enclosure.
I put two in there bc my cold side was low 60s. Now my temps are 89 hot side and 77 cold side. I have a Burmese python.
If you’re using the HerpStat 2 for them.
Make sure the VE panel is set to Proportional Heating and the ProHeat panel is set on dimming.
VE panels are designed with the VE stats that run best on pulse. So it’s best to run the VE heat panel on a thermostat with pulse proportional heating (which HerpStats can do)
The ProHeat panel can be run on dimming or pulse. However since you are using a HerpStat. The HerpStat manual states that dimming is their most “efficient” heating method, hence why a HerpStat + ProHeat panel should be used with the dimming option.
