Reath Kawang nyak thank you brother but these colonists claimed that we were giving them problems yet they were the very people who just came to us and imposed their ways of life on us. how clever were these whites? we did not go to europe to give them problems. naath nuer are the best in the world.
Dear Prof. Macfarlane, how wonderful it is that you have put this whole series of videos on Anthropology, Social, Political and Global. Your lectures on the origins of the modern world has been most stimulating. In a way, it is the most fundamental part of any education, how exactly our world came to be. After all the formal work in mathematics, systems and AI, it is uncanny how your lectures had a "completing" effect on me. Thank you for your efforts, how could one ever compensate you for this!
Thank you so much for posting these videos on here - was struggling so much with an anthropology essay until I found these films. It all seems so much easier now. Thank you!!! :D
I am honoured to have sat on a cushion which once belonged to Evans- Pritchard. I also have the honour to know a now elderly former student of Evans- Pritchard. This programme has done exactly what it should do, it has prompted me to go to the works of Evans- Pritchard, starting with (only because it is the only one I have) his 'Social Anthropology' (1951). Thank you, as ever, for putting this online.
a very nice videos that tells us clearly about what ethnography should really be like, shows us the best example by Evans Pritchard... very helpful in writing my essay.. thanks for this post
In a creative way, in my novel, Heart of Wilderness (now on Amazon Kindle), I have also portrayed the kind of dancing shaman as seen in this documentary as well as the dynamics of witchcraft in Tanzania and Kenya. To be honest, I can never call any aspect of a people's culture "primitive". It is primitive to talk of primitivity of cultures because it only means the mind is too simple to understand their complexity. In My anthropology classes at university, "primitive" was the most off-putting tag to assign to any culture that is different from the Western stream.
I've always had this deep repulsion for western "rational observation and analysis divorced of soulful participation." I have always felt a stranger in the society with this consciousness. If I were an anthropologist, I would study men in suits rotting away in skyscrapers and all the other fake people in this artificial economy/society. The neurosis of modern life is what needs anthropology--perhaps to see how to return to authenticity. This is a personal opinion based on personal experience, no offense intended.
You're humble, but they won't be humble with you. Their life has been built on the "civilization" arrogance, that even the very wound that eats them is "civilization". "We came to civilize you," they say and out go our resources, down goes our humanity, out goes our very life. They will be very harsh with you--even their worst should be worthy of aspiration and emulation.
Anthropologists do study those things, ie, men in suits in skyscrapers, etc. Every day. It's mostly what they do. As for the "rational observation and analysis divorced of soulful participation," in terms of anthropology that's an outmoded method of study. It had its place as data gathering, but the discipline has, over the last fifty years, expanded its approach to be more reflexive and participatory, with the evolving understanding that we can't suborn our own cultural underpinnings, no matter how "rational" we think we are. There are many ways to approach studying other peoples, and anthropology embraces numerous approaches.
if you want a complete history of religion search for Mircea Eliade... he managed to identify and to offer a critical analysis on the evolution of religious thinking from the first religious ideas of stone age to modern monotheism.
Great study! Now, the next step is to "stop to respect" so much any kind of believe and seriously investigate if the guys who control the results of these rituals and oracles answers, really believe in what they are doing... or they are just manipulating the ingenuous people like actual religions do.
I say that was profound in the honesty of your word's,, I have to admit though having seen the video it did occur to me there is no difference in the emotional belief's between organised belief systems and witch doctors,, I put this thought to my good lady just this very last evening,, erm,,, quite what is a heretic
Ironically enough, my grandmother believed she had the ability to kill people with her thoughts. She apparently did it several times, but only to people who deserved it. And we're from the Balkans, not Africa.

Who is the former student at 25:40, an Egyptian anthropologist? I hear his name as "Isa Ali" but I can't find any books or papers by him online?
