16:24 hands down. The most rewarding moment for me last summer was seeing monarch caterpillars on milkweed I started from seed. No words can express the pride and joy!

This year instead of saving seeds on my pepper plants I just dug one of the most vigorous plants I had out of the ground, potted it up and stuck it in a cheap walmart plastic greenhouse in my sun room! Man that things still been giving me fresh peppers all winter long! If you have the time/space to keep a mature pepper plant overwinter I think it's a great idea. Within the greenhouse i've only needed to water it 3-4 times this winter at most!

Something about collecting seed, some can get cross pollination. I had a celosia that I loved and collected the seed. The first year it was great until I planted a second variety nearby. The bees cross pollinated it and the seeds that came from it were not true to type. I learned my lesson and keep a beloved variety far away from any plants in the same family.

This maybe the first time I’ve seen Griffin chilling out lol he’s so cute.
We got one of those surprises from baker creek last year. They were tiny little spoon tomatoes and my kiddo loved them. That plant was gigantic and spread four feet wide. So this year we are slowing down on tomato growing. If anyone is getting peas from baker creek, I’d advise Lillian’s caseload peas. They were so good I never got to cook them. My husband and kiddo ate them before they ever made it into the house lol they’re really wonderful.

i love this time of year. started some marigolds and dahlia seeds a week ago and just started my tomatoes over the weekend. Wanted to get my potatoes and onions in the ground too but fell ill and the weather was little chilly anyways. I have had luck potting tomatoes up into 4-6" pots and growing them in the greenhouse until the weather gets warmer.

I grew passionflower when a fellow teacher gave me a little plant in 1993. I didn't think to dig up a bit of it when we moved to NC in 2004. I would casually look for them over the years and through the FB Perennial Gardeners group was able to get a very large plant about 4 years ago. I did dig it up when we built the new house in 2021 and it has loved life growing along our fence. It has been gifting babies to many friends. Let me know, Jim and Stephany, if you'd like me to bring you one (or several) of her babies this spring since we live in the Raleigh area. 🥰

Passion flowers really are a blessing and a curse. Even though they're native to our area... they act like theyre invasive plants and eat anything in their way if left unchecked. I wonder if the new owner of your old home would ever be able to dig that really established passion flower out even if they wanted to and I dont think so lmfao. Once that thing is in the ground it aint never coming out. I learned my lesson a long time ago. To enjoy the beauty of those flowers you have to plant the vine far away from anything else or it'll eat it's neighbors alive in 2 weeks lmfao!!

Black Krim and Chocolate Stripes are the best tasting tomatoes I’ve ever grown and I’ve grown a lot. I think the best heirloom tomatoes taste better than hybrids. Not as disease resistant but I’ll trade that for taste.

My neighbor has an abundance of milk weed plants in her garden and I know there are various types of milkweed but she hasn’t seen a monarch in two years! We are in the mountains of NC calling our zone 5 now instead of 6b. I finally succeeded transplanting two into . lousy soil with clay. We have lots of swallowtails here but I shall remain hopeful.

Salvias are one of a handful of annuals/perennials that thrive here in the Central Texas summer heat. I would like to try Summer Jewel Salvia this year. I'm not sure we will see them at our local nurseries. Definitely not the seeds, so I would have to order those online.

Thanks for putting all of this information together! I always learn something. Just FYI based on my experience, if you make a mistake and start your tomatoes too early you can pot them up into fresh soil or just plant the leggy plants. I have sometimes not gotten around to planting all of my tomato seedlings until pretty far into the season. Seedlings were definitely looking leggy, yellow/purple (nutrient deficits) and generally pretty pathetic. Once they got into the good garden soil in the raised beds, they tool off and produced. Strip off the lower leaves and plant them deep. Other plants, especially peppers, may be more finicky. Remember, even if your seedlings fail, you can pick up seedlings at a nursery or the big box stores -- I was actually pleasantly surprised by the varieties available. However, it is really rewarding to grow your own from seed. Expect some great successes and don't be discouraged by failures, they happen to everyone.

I know this is a little out of the ordinary, but I thin my lettuce to 3 plants each cell instead of one. I have found not only are they more robust and healthier, if something gets one of them you have the other two which will quickly fill in! 😊

I recently received the results of my soil test for the vegetable garden so thank you for encouraging me to do that. The results were all nutrients were not needed except low in potassium. Also the pH was 6.6. It was recommended to use 15-0-15 fertilizer or heavier for heavier feeders, which I understand. Also recommended was to apply borax (very small amount, 1 TBLS per 100 feet of row) to crops such as broccoli and root crops such as turnips and beets. Why the borax ???? Also, would it be helpful to work in ashes from my firepit from time to time? On a side note, my little garden space, I am convinced, lies on a rock shelf as I cannot go down far enough without hitting rock to put in stakes in most spots. But I get good sun there so that is where I garden for veggies. I have literally hand sifted the rocks out of this space over the period of a couple of years. Thank you again for your channel, you are so knowledgeable and informative in all aspects of gardening.

I’m excited about those envy zinnias that are solid green. I don’t have the greatest luck with zinnias indoors. I think it’s because I don’t have a grow light, just a bright window. I have better luck outdoors sowing but my plants are smaller. We are starting some delphinium, dark cherry scabiosa and larkspur in gallon jugs outside today to see if that works for us. Then in the next week or so we’ll plant peas, carrots, radish and beets in the ground.

Shelving - those metal shelves are great, tho pricey indeed. I purchased a plastic shelving unit from a big box store. Cheap and sturdy! Check the dimensions and weight limits as Jim directs. And yes, of course I have it set up in my dining room! 🤣 I used 2 single fluorescent bulbs per shelf and rigged up a chain and caribeaner hanging system. Passion flower? Don’t do it, Jim. Just DON’T invite that into your space! Eek! Too aggressive. How about a nice bignonia ‘Tangerine Beauty’ with those gorgeous tubular flowers? Grows huge but at least remains as ONE plant! Or a Confederate Jasmine with that divine fragrance? Or annual sweet pea vine?
