@spensercolganiswallpaper : Spenser, I will be sizing over a white Farrow and Ball modern emulsion, a water-based paint. In the future I may want to return to a painted surface. Which sizing product should I use? Knowing this would help me a lot. I’m learning a great deal here, but I need to get my prep right. Thanks!

We have a 113 year old brick house. The old wallpaper was painted. I removed the drop ceiling and where the plaster meets the wallpaper has been caulked to make it a more subtle change. The wall was freshly painted with white gloss paint. I am interested in purchasing a forest wallpaper mural but am not sure what I should use to prep the wall correctly. What would you suggest?

      1. If you press on the wallpaper, is it solid? Does it press in?
      2. If yes to 1 above, remove it to the base wall, Skimcoat with joint compound and 10” taping knife. Make smooth.
      3. If hard, oil base kilz original o de the wallpaper. Wait 24 hours.
Shine flashlight on the wall the next day after dusk, all lights out.
      3. If imperfections, fill in with joint compound. Let dry. Sand if needed.
Spot prime over your patches with oil Kilz original.
      Wait 2 hours.
      Hang your mural.
When you’re done, have a strong drink with your spouse.
      After that, go To

I just took some wallpaper down ..the wall has paint under it and
some kind chalky white stuff over that paint. not sure what it is ?Looks like the stuff they you on drywall holes/patching or maybe it's something they put on so wallpaper would stick.
Dose not seem like glue .The wallpaper came off easy enough ..it's been there for more than 20 years.
Should I prime it then paint it? thanks for the tips.

Hi, I really enjoy the way you present things. In my case, there’s been some confusion. My contractor was originally going to put up the wallpaper, but he changed his mind. So When I was getting the paint primer list together for him, the clerk at the paint store said, I shouldn’t have the walls painted that I expect to wallpaper later on. On the strength of that, I have instructed my contractor to have his guys leave the walls primed in those areas to be wallpapered. Now, I am learning this was a bad idea, and that I should have simply instructed them to prime and paint all areas. I don’t have the wallpaper yet, and now I’m thinking my new house will be both without wallpaper in large areas, and unprepared for when I am ready to at some point. 😢

Hahaha I oil based primed over limestone paint . And my wallpapering worked. Direct wallpapering over limestone paint (chuna) absorbs glue inside walls, I experimented. But I primed over limestone paint is big experiment for me.

Hey Spencer Thanks for your videos. I've watched a few of them. I'm wanting to wallpaper a bathroom and want to know if the type called, "Pre-Pasted Washable wall paper" will suffice and not fall down in a high humidity situation that a bathroom creates when the shower runs? I will be installing the wall surface beneath the wallpaper. One reason I'm doing wallpaper is so I don't have to mud and texturize the wall. Can I put my wallpaper directly on sheetrock? Shall I put the products you mentioned here - Shields or Loxon- on the sheetrock?

Hi Spencer. I want to hang wallpaper. I want to get my wall ready. I have a textured wall and I want to even it out. My wall has a semi-gloss finish so my plan is to sand it with an 80 grit, skim coat it, sand it again to even everything out, seal it with guards, then..... Do I need to apply the Shields for better wall protection when the time comes to take off the wallpaper? Please help!!

    • @spencercolgan
      @spencercolgan  4 роки тому +2

      1. Do not start off by sanding your walls.
      2. Start off by painting your wall with Kilz original , oil based.
      3. Let it dry.
      4. Apply skim coat THIN.
      5. Avoid sanding that.
      6. After that drys, skim coat it again with a 10” taping knife. Let this dry.
      6. Get a sponge sanding block, get 5 of them. Spray with a sprayer your dry joint compounded new skim coat. Don’t soak it. Spritz it.
      7. With your wet sanding sponge, sand your wall in a circular motion till it’s smooth. “Tool” off compound that comes “back to life” after sanding in a circular motion.
      8. Now seal your compound with Roman 999. Let dry overnight.
      9 hang your paper.

Flat paint, Romans 909 vinyl prep, Shieldz clear/white or Gardz. Enamel paint Romans 909 or shieldz. Skim coat or unpainted drywall Gardz. Bullseye 123 is not suitable over dusty skim coat as it does not penetrate, paper sticks to Bullseye 123 but it does not grip seams well. If we're hanging over old unstrippable paper (rare) either gardz or shieldz white.

Hello from Canada. Thank you so much for your videos, they are super informative. I am hoping you may be able to answer a couple of questions.
I am planning to hang wallpaper and currently the walls are painted a very dark purple. Can I simply size the painted wall (with guardz) and install the wallpaper or do I have to worry about the wall underneath being so dark?
Next question, while a textured finish has never been applied to the wall, the surface is imperfect. I have sanded to remove any burs sticking up but there remains a slight texture, as though there was too much paint on the roller when the wall was last painted. It isn’t bumpy like the “orange peel” finish I have seen in your other videos. But it is not smooth like glass. How problematic will this be? Our wallpaper seems to be quite thick and the pattern is large.
Lastly, the wall seems to bow in places. Are our wallpaper plans doomed?
    Thank you so much!

    • @spencercolgan
      @spencercolgan  3 роки тому +1

      1. Do not worry about waves in the wall. There’s nothing you can do about that
      2.
You mentioned that the wall is painted very dark. If your wallpaper is light colored, simply paint the wall with Zinser 123.
You mentioned that your wallpaper is thick and so take it and put it over the texture after you were at the back of it and take a look and see how it looks and if it looks bumpy, that’s how your wallpaper will look installed if it does not look bumpy, you did great
