    I really like the lyrics "Ugly folks, forget your shyness. You could soon be called Your Highness!" because it's obvious Clopin was talking directly to Quasimodo. Whatever happened to Quasi afterwards, I think Clopin just wanted to make sure Quasi enjoyed himself :)

      @twilightrocks4692 5 років тому +91

      @@micycles1200 well it kinda makes sense. They did find the gypsies' hiding place during that part, so Clopin might've been reacting out of a place of self preservation, not really hatred or anything. He's peobably like "hey man, you're cool and all....but you can't deny your connections to Judge Asshole. So if I have to kill you to save my ass, bye bye Quasi" lol

    This song and whole scene have a sinister and cruel undertone to the revelry and I love it. Hunchback takes flak these days for playing on stereotypes and having a murky message, but it reminds the viewer many people not that long ago (and unfortunately even some still today) treated differences like physical deformities or cultural minorities like the Roma very harshly and unfairly. Disney actually went out on a limb with this one

    Even though this isn't my favourite scene, I find myself getting this song stuck in my head a lot. It's quite catchy and well written. I just wish the scene didn't cater to kids as much. But the rest of the film is so mature I can forgive it.

    • @JJdaPK
      @JJdaPK 6 років тому +27

      Unlike A Guy Like You, I actually don't think Topsy Turvy is that catering to children. I mean, it's a festival. It's supposed to be more fun and upbeat. I will agree though that the marketing of the movie was overall misleading. Like a good 80 percent of the trailers focused on the Festival of Fools and made the movie look like it would be some kind of romantic comedy.

    • @linkfan160
      @linkfan160 6 років тому +11

      I agree. Frankly, A Guy like You feels more like a scene/song number that should have been a deleted scene rather than a completed part that they put in the finished movie. It doesn't go with the rest of the film at all. Topsy Turvy at least has a bit of that Medieval, European flair going on with it and still feels like it could be part of that story space.
      Honestly I don't blame Disney for the way they marketed this film. If they had shown clips from the Hellfire scene or one of the darker moments in general, parents would have found it questionable and wouldn't have allowed their kids to see it. So imagine their faces when they got into the theater and realized what kind of movie this really was. How did they try to explain the themes of religion, racism, lust and genocide to their children? It was probably a very interesting time to be a Disney fan.

      Baladria Disney marketed the hell out of the Festival of Fools as the festival and the gargoyles were the only parts of the movie that could be used to cleverly disguise this movie as a "fun comedy." Disney definitely didn't want parents to know that Hunchback was a rather dark film dealing with genocide, religion, lust, abuse and prejudice.

      eli crowley in the Middle Ages it was, hence Victor Hugo included it in the novel.
      Celebrated during 6th January (coinciding with the old pre-Vatican II date of the Feast of the Epiphany/Three Kings), one of the highlights was the crowning of the "Pope of Fools" (as described in the novel).
      But due to too much revelry (or also medieval fake news), it was totally banned by the Church.

      such festivals DO exist. They are just rarely cute and fun like a Disney festival would make it seem. They're usually vulgar and debaucherous. Fat people walking around naked, drunk people causing disturbances, people picking fights, people peeing all over the place, etc.
