regarding the bogus M40 messages, a few months ago there was a variable speed limit gantry on M1 near Sheffield (junction 35 and 35A) that was showing a compulsory 50 limit, 24 hours a day, for at least a week - but only on three of the four lanes, and for no obvious reason it became obvious something was wrong because at the time I was working shifts, and it was very odd seeing that when going home at 10 pm, when the road was nearly empty; normally the signs are either blank or showing National Speed Limit
I get so fed up with lane hoggers, I either under or overtake. (Whatever is safest considering an overtake from lane 1 to lane 3 and back to lane 1 is 5 separate manoeuvres) People need to learn the rules of the road!

I drive up and down the M3 every day, there was an "End" sign up for around 3-4 weeks. The 60mph signs were also on for days on end the other day in the other direction. The actual way around that part of Oxford is the turn right where you turned right from Thames Street, then right again, to come around the other side of the courthouse, then stop at the end or turn right ending up at the same place but from the other direction. The mini one way system is set up that way to speed up buses going to all the bus stops in St. Aldates. Most cars are continuing on to the shopping centre, a car park or the train station. It could be signposted better than it is.
@@thelondondashcam Several bus lanes and bus gates in Oxford allow buses, taxis and bicycles to go through. Perhaps that one should also allow taxis so people can drop off at the court or police station opposite.
Tony I feel your pain about Oxford. Where I live (Exeter, Devon) in my neighbourhood we had a very similar thing for about 3 years, until it got ditched a couple of months ago. Basically all residential roads surrounding my road were blocked by barriers and bus gates, which by the way had cameras guarding them. Myself and everyone in my neighbourhood had to do a completely unnecessary detour to get from Exeter’s main roads to our houses, it was disgusting.
Just for info though, on this occasion, our driver with the barrister as a passenger could have used the bus gate as the sign includes taxis as ‘authorised vehicles.
Weird, I had someone (a van IIRC) do that exact thing @3:02 to me a few days ago - but at least I got a baleful glare for having the temerity to be 'getting in his way' by approaching the roundabout!
I used to live in Oxford near that bit and I’m pretty certain you’re not meant to turn left where you did after doubling back on yourself (although there are no signs saying you can’t now). Normally you follow it round where you did the U turn and it brings you out on St Aldates where you ended up. Stupid design I agree. Oxford hates cars though
5:47 Non-trunk roads are paid for out of Council Tax and Business Rates. Trunk Roads are paid for out if general taxation, so pedestrians cyclists, horse riders and motorists all pay the same and yet it is the motorists that cause the most wear, tear and damage to our roads. Every pedestrian or cyclist on our roads is one less motor vehicle wearing them out so a little less on our tax.
As normal you are wrong and missing the point not everyone pays council tax !! Let me give you some examples of what a car driver has to pay to be legally on the road, Insurance, MOT, Tax, Congestion, ULEZ, not to mention fuel which is heavily taxed and having a driving license. Compare that to what a cycle needs, a bike. And the motorist pays all of that and the roads are shocking and cycle lanes are being put up everywhere who's paying for that ?
@@thelondondashcam What is your evidence that pedestrians and cyclists pay less council tax than motorists? Or did you just make that up? The only reason that cycle lanes are being put up is to protect cyclists from inconsiderate motorists. They are paid out of council tax that cyclists and motorists pay equally.
@@thelondondashcam The infrastructure is paid for by central funds. Not quite sure why you'd getting so pissy about the 3 abreast cyclists. It's not like there'd have been room for anyone to overtake them if they'd been two abreast.

To understand why Lycras are so hated you need to understand that 99% of drivers are working for a living and Lycras are seen as an obstruction to that.

The original intent of those "baby on board signs" has been completely lost over the years. The idea was that when you put the baby into the car you put the sign up, when you took the baby out you took the sign down. They were supposed to alert emergency services to the presence of a baby so it would be actively searched for. It started after a tragedy in Canada where the (unconscious) adults were rescued and the baby who has hidden in the wreckage was not.

Your comment about paying f all to be on the road irked me somewhat - we all pay the upkeep and we can all use them. Just certain modes of transport may have more fees involved.
Yeah it's a very ignorant thing to say. Vehicles pay for their emissions and the damage they do to roads. Peds and cyclists don't do any damage, so why would they pay extra
We don't all pay for the roads, if you pay council tax then you do but obviously not every cyclist pays council tax, car users are taxed in so many different ways from fuel to road tax and I know that doesn't go to the roads but it's what we have to pay to be on the road if you know what I mean.
@@thelondondashcam Well yes, but for good reason, cars are dangerous, damage roads over time etc. The average adult cyclist will pay council tax though, obviously im not counting teenagers or bums, as those same bums could drive without tax/insurance etc also. Why just council tax? What about VAT when purchasing anything from the shop? You really do need to clue yourself up on how central funds work and are distributed to all services, including roads and infrastructure
13:00 Flashing amber lights (top-bottom) on a gantry merely denote an advisory speed limit - it's not mandatory so you can't be nicked for exceeding it. Flashing red (I think) lights (left-right) DO denote a mandatory speed limit.
The flashing yellow beacons mean "advisory" if shown with a speed, but "mandatory" if shown with a diagonal arrow (move to the indicated lane), or a bent arrow pointing ahead and left (leave motorway at next exit). Closed lanes should use a cross and red beacons. Mandatory speed limits are shown with matrix signs that emulate the standard "red circle" speed limit signs.
Hi @londondashcam I usually really enjoy tour videos, I live in the same area as you so it is interesting to watch, I did want to point out a couple of things that did not sit right with this vid though! At 6 mins in concerning the 3 abreast cyclists, they are doing exactly the right thing here, blocking the car from overtaking as they are approaching a roundabout with a traffic island just before it! If they were at the side of the road, 9 times out of 10, the car would overtake and squeeze them into the island or overtake on the roundabout! If i was in that same place cycling by myself I would move into the middle of the lane to protect myself too. And regarding your comments about cyclists paying nothing to be on the roads...you know cyclists and pedestrians subsidise those who drive right? We all pay the same for the upkeep of our roads but somebof us do way less damage!
You're absolutely right. It is called taking a primary position and it is actually advised in the highway code. I don't know how so many people get this wrong and just think they are doing it to annoy people. It is for SAFETY.
Everyone keeps bleating about how peds/cyclist subsidise motorists - give me a break. Peds/cyclists are also provided pavements, crossings and dedicated lanes, for example. So that point is moot. Cyclists would '9 times out of 10' get more respect if they followed the highway code instead of cherry-picking what benefits them.
I wouldn't mind betting the merc driver was distracted and hit that kerb on the left as we saw the screen. I wonder what could have distracted them?? On a (not) entirely unrelated note I've just bought a 10 year old Mitsubishi ASX and it has a hands free kit built in to the steering wheel that works using Bluetooth. I wonder if a Merc has a hands free kit??
Don't get why drivers haven't installed a phone holder in their cars. They're fairly cheap and make life easier even for an old fart like me. Certainly much safer driving one or no handed.

Muppets have this NEED to get in front of hgvs no matter how tight space is just to exit motorways all the while there's no one behind us.🤬🤬🤬🤬
Highways are pedestrian and equine rights of way and have been since long since motor vehicles were invented. Some roads come under the Special Roads Act Act 1949 and those rights are removed. Special roads are usually motorways, slip roads, bridges and tunnels. Right of way means a right to make ones way which is different to priority. In general, any road user that is in front of you (ie got to that part of the road prior to you) or is on the other side of a give way sign of line, has priority.
Hope this helps you, and others, that have been fed false information about how the roads are paid for All tax payers pay for roads, not just motorists. Those who pay income tax and those who pay council tax are the ones who pay for roads, and that’s not just motorists. And anybody who buys anything in Britain also helps to pay for roads because VAT also contributes to the national coffers. Businesses which pay business rates also contribute into the national coffers. And that’s where the money for roads comes from: the consolidated fund, the treasury’s pot of cash that pays for everything. No taxation in the UK is ring-fenced i.e raised by one set of users, and spent on that set of users
Maybe I didn't explain it very well but I think too many people are missing the point here, I as a motorist have to pay to be on the road legally, Insurance, MOT, Tax, Congestion Charge, Toll roads, not to mention a driving license. Cyclist and Pedestrians don't have to pay any of that to be on the road.
@@thelondondashcam You have just explained it very well in this comment and I must admit the comment is rather disappointing. I’ll try and go through it as much as I can. Liability insurance is a legal requirement to pay for health and property damage in the event of a collision. Cyclists will have home insurance that covers this and some will have specific cycle insurance. Most motor insurance also comes with uninsured protection to cover for those that are not insured which believe it nor not is also drivers. Sometimes in error not realising they don’t have drive other vehicles on their policy but uninsured nonetheless An MOT is only required on vehicles over 3 years old or younger than a certain age (can’t remember the year off the top of my head but 1978 rings a bell). This is to make sure the vehicle is in a safe condition to be on the road and hopefully catch any defects before they become an issue. That stranded vehicle in this compilation looks like control arm failure which would be picked up on an MOT as starting to fail By tax I assume you are referring to VED. This is an annual payment for using the road mostpy based upon emissions. If you don’t want to pay a high amount, get a vehicle that doesn’t pollute as much. Nobody is forcing you to drive in a congestion charge area or use a toll road. That is your choice. Having spent many years driving in London the biggest cause of congestion was motorised traffic, not cyclists or pedestrians As for having to pay to obtain a licence, are you really having a grumble about that? The roads are bad enough as it is without contemplating removing the need to have a licence I would have hoped someone with your number of followers would be promoting sharing the roads not trying to further promote the “us vs them” agenda with this false narrative
Well I've got to say you've just proved my point and I feel I have to correct you in a few matters here. I have home insurance but it doesn't cover me in my car I have to have a separate insurance for that unlike cyclist, so what does that mean yes it means I pay and they don't. You talk about my insurance having uninsurance cover if they hit me my insurance will pay, but there's an excess to my insurance and I also lose my no claims bonus because of an uninsured cyclist. MOTs wrong again I have to have my MOT done every six months from new because I am a private higher driver, a test that a cyclist does not have to have doesn't have to pay for so again it's something I pay for and they don't just so I can be on the road legally. It really is disappointing that you actually brought up home insurance as their insurance that really was disappointing.
@@thelondondashcam One reason for seperate insurance is due to the claims being much different. Most cycle claims are between a few hundren into low thousands whereas car insurance claims are usually from the low thousands up to hundreds of thousands as car do more damage that a cycle. Do some research into how insurance works. I recommend shopping around for you lr insurance if you pay excess on uninsured claims, I have no excess in any claim deemed not my fault as that is recovered from the central MIB fund. Another reason is little Susie, a 4 year old out with her parents, happily cycling along. Do you expect her to be paying full insurance? Let us get to the real issue here, you have been reading about mandatory registration, licensing and insurance for cyclists haven’t you? It doesn’t work. Every country that has introduced any such scheme has abandoned the scheme as it costs more to run the scheme than is raised As for MOT’s, that is your career choice and honestly it is good that private hire vehicles are inspected every 6 months. After all, you have the lives of others in your hands. I am sure the fares you charge cover these additional costs you have as you would’ve known about them before taking that career. Who knew different careers come with different costs Why is it disappointing I brought up home insurance? You claim, along with others, that cyclists need insurance when most already do. But like vehicles, there are some that are uninsured These are the costs of driving. It is a privledge not a right
Actually many of the cycle lanes, traffic "improvement" schemes, LTNs and the like are paid for out of funds from civil enforcement of traffic contraventions. There is a legal requirement that the various authorities that collect those fines put any surplus from civil enforcement into ring fenced funds that may only be used for such things. One of the reasons that we see such a rush on those sort of schemes is that some local authorities have amassed an embarrassing amount of money in those funds.

The older dot matrix signs and those warning signs that you see in the central reservation are often quite inaccurate. The modern overhead gantry signs are more accurate and are linked to the system of cameras so the controllers can actually see what is happening on the road and react accordingly.
Im watching these too often, today i heard myself thinking about braking distances and people wandering over their lane lines, not to mention the nut job coming up behind me way too fast, leaning on his horn, because some other driver had, admittedly not signalling, pulled over into same lane. 5:42 now I'm sorry, but you are totally wrong there. Pedestrians and cyclists do pay to use the road. Most local road maintenance funding comes out of your council tax. So, depending on how big your house is, that cyclist or pedestrian might actually be paying more towards the upkeep of the roads than you are!
To be honest acknowledging people at every single meet situation in London is tiring, distracting and can confuse people. Flashing your hazards to say sorry after a crazy manoeuvre or be being let into a traffic filled road is more reasonable
Those yellow speed signs are not legally enforceable it has to have the white numbers in a red circle to be enforceable. If you need extra content you should pop over to SE18 where you will blow a gasket. Remember to bring your copy of the African highway code

7:03, wrong, if they are running against traffic the impact is higher than if on the same side, the maths is : a car doing 30mph hits a runner doing 5mph towards them, impact speed 35mph, if the runner is going the same direction the impact speed is 25mph, enough to make the difference between hurt and dead.
I suggest you read the highway code I thought I explained it, you can see the cars coming towards you and maybe be able to get out of the way of them if they haven't seen you, if you're running in the same direction as traffic you can't see them so you have no chance of getting out of the way. I have a theory about all the weird traffic schemes, cycle lanes and so on that you refer to. We do need somebody to do traffic planning, so councils hire one or more people to do this. All is fine for the first year or two, as they fix all the issues in their area. Now, though, they have a dilemma: do they admit that there's nothing left for them to do, and lose their jobs - or do they keep inventing crazier and crazier schemes to justify their continued employment? I think you can guess which they will do, and that completely explains the many bonkers road layouts we encounter daily.
I think there's a lot of jobs where they eventually start ""innovating"" so they can keep their jobs, that's probably how the term "enshittification" comes up so much these days, just this example is a smaller scale, still money driven but only cause mans doesn't want to lose their job lmao.

Because I follow a few cyclist channels on UA-cam and I see the guys stop at reds but other cyclist just ride round them. @@thelondondashcam Everything else? So lets go through those for cyclists, shall we? Fuel - not needed. Congestion charges - don't cause congestion. MOT - not a one tonne machine capable of causing fatalities because of mechanical failure. License - not required (by law). VED - no emissions. Toll roads - generally only on large roads not used by cyclists. You pay for all that stuff, or not in the case of VED, because you drive a car, not because you use the road. If you want to see cyclists paying more to use the road, what would you have them pay for? How much should pedestrians pay to use the road? Besides the maintenance of the roads, because both already pay for that.

At 1:25 I think you are being a bit harsh on the learner in the Mini as they were blocked by the red light jumper and would otherwise have been out of your way
What I don't get is that most cyclists, I assume drive a car, so should be aware of things around them like red lights but they still ride like idiots.
A lot of other road users, in particular cyclists, pedestrians and those suicidal scooter riders (legal and illegal electric things), lack what I would call "personal responsibility". They behave like they own the road and then they make YOU responsible for their safety even though the Highway Code says that you have to take responsibility for YOUR OWN safety while using a public highway. We don't teach our kids to be reliant on someone else to keep them alive when they're on the roads so why do people as adults believe they aren't responsible for themselves or their safety when they use the roads??
Unfortunately, a lot of people don’t take responsibility for their safety. But that makes it even more important that the person driving the death machine is careful. Complaining in a YT comment isn’t going to do anything, especially when you’re facing a manslaughter charge because you hit an idiot on an e-scooter.
5:49. Many cyclist are arseholes, but drop the ignorant tax canard. They pay VAT on their bikes, equipment and services - probably more than £400 on buying that cycle alone - which more than covers any damage they cause to roads and marginal costs of cycle schemes. Furthermore, most will also have a car that would cause more damage than their bike for that journey.
@@thelondondashcam so what? Do you think a road tax for cycles is in the least bit practical? Even greedy politicians think it’s stupid, not least because if they were taxed as cars they’d get zero VED as they are zero admissions. What damage do cyclists do to roads? The fact is, like motorists, they pay far more in tax than the cost of catering to their use. By all means, like me hate most cyclists for their entitled and disrespectful behaviour but you are wrong to call them tax dodgers - reserve that for EV drivers.
@@thelondondashcamSemantics, semantics. While we’re at it, pedestrians more than pay their way through council tax, where non-drivers subsidise drivers by the sharing of road costs. Do you really think that was a safe time to be thinking about passing a cyclist, let alone three? There was a traffic island coming up just before a roundabout On an open road it is often safer for cyclists to ride side by side so vehicles can pass them quicker by using the opposite lane, which is recommended anyway by the wording “give as much room as you would a car”

regarding the bogus M40 messages, a few months ago there was a variable speed limit gantry on M1 near Sheffield (junction 35 and 35A) that was showing a compulsory 50 limit, 24 hours a day, for at least a week - but only on three of the four lanes, and for no obvious reason
it became obvious something was wrong because at the time I was working shifts, and it was very odd seeing that when going home at 10 pm, when the road was nearly empty; normally the signs are either blank or showing National Speed Limit

The only trouble with that is I will be on the wrong side of the road to drop off at the courthouse.

As a resident of Bromley, I feel the same as you about the neighbouring county when I drive in Croydon, Coulsdon and around that one-way in Sutton.

So that point is moot.

one for you to check out horses have got and always have had right of way on all roads
Hope this helps you, and others, that have been fed false information about how the roads are paid for
All tax payers pay for roads, not just motorists.
Sometimes in error not realising they don’t have drive other vehicles on their policy but uninsured nonetheless
An MOT is only required on vehicles over 3 years old or younger than a certain age (can’t remember the year off the top of my head but 1978 rings a bell). This is to make sure the vehicle is in a safe condition to be on the road and hopefully catch any defects before they become an issue. That stranded vehicle in this compilation looks like control arm failure which would be picked up on an MOT as starting to fail
By tax I assume you are referring to VED. This is an annual payment for using the road mostpy based upon emissions. If you don’t want to pay a high amount, get a vehicle that doesn’t pollute as much.
Nobody is forcing you to drive in a congestion charge area or use a toll road. That is your choice. Having spent many years driving in London the biggest cause of congestion was motorised traffic, not cyclists or pedestrians
As for having to pay to obtain a licence, are you really having a grumble about that? The roads are bad enough as it is without contemplating removing the need to have a licence
I would have hoped someone with your number of followers would be promoting sharing the roads not trying to further promote the “us vs them” agenda with this false narrative
Every country that has introduced any such scheme has abandoned the scheme as it costs more to run the scheme than is raised
As for MOT’s, that is your career choice and honestly it is good that private hire vehicles are inspected every 6 months. After all, you have the lives of others in your hands.
I am sure the fares you charge cover these additional costs you have as you would’ve known about them before taking that career. Who knew different careers come with different costs
Why is it disappointing I brought up home insurance? You claim, along with others, that cyclists need insurance when most already do. But like vehicles, there are some that are uninsured
These are the costs of driving.

Those yellow speed signs are not legally enforceable it has to have the white numbers in a red circle to be enforceable. If you need extra content you should pop over to SE18 where you will blow a gasket. Remember to bring your copy of the African highway code

At 5:00 there's the Jeremy Vine Cycling Club out for the day!! 🤪

Is Bromley where the Crapapple drivers come from?
7:03, wrong, if they are running against traffic the impact is higher than if on the same side, the maths is : a car doing 30mph hits a runner doing 5mph towards them, impact speed 35mph, if the runner is going the same direction the impact speed is 25mph, enough to make the difference between hurt and dead.
I suggest you read the highway code I thought I explained it, you can see the cars coming towards you and maybe be able to get out of the way of them if they haven't seen you, if you're running in the same direction as traffic you can't see them so you have no chance of getting out of the way. As I say please read the highway code.

7:00 Rule H2 "Pedestrians may use any part of the road". Stop complaining about people doing nothing wrong. Pedestrians do not have to move out of the way to let motor vehicles past. It is the responsibility of the motorist to slow down and only pass the pedestrian when it is safe to do so - ie with a 2m gap which you failed to give them.
Do please learn and follow the highway code.
Please take your own advice and read the Highway Code: "Highway Code Rules for Pedestrians Rule 1 Pavements and footways (including any path along the side of a road) should be used if provided."
@@craftsmanwoodturner Motorists and cyclists are required to follow the highway code or they commit an offence and can be prosecuted. There is no such requirement for pedestrians. There is no requirement for pedestrians to read, know or follow the highway code or even know of its existence. @@ditch3827 just give up, you spout the same crap every time we see a stupid person who doesn't think "where is the safest place for me to run". Yes, they can run in the road, but if they weren't, a dangerous motorist could not put them in danger, could they?
Also, on a road like this with parked cars and other obstructions, do you really expect us to drive behind them at 4 mph and not go past when we can, even if it is less than 2 metres, because that defeats the purpose of us having a car in the first place. It isn't realistic, is it? You must never have driven a car in your life the way your views are formed. I walk, drive and ride bikes so I can see from every perspective. Whoever designed the highway code must never have driven in their life, like with most government policies as they never seem fit for purpose these days.
Please forget the highway code for 2 seconds and just think about the safe and considerate thing to do. All road users need to be considerate of each other which to me says a certain give and take, i.e., if motorists have to act as to not put pedestrians in danger (which I agree with, I don't want to run anyone over), then pedestrians should be considerate to motorists and move out of the way and let us enjoy the advantages that we pay to have (paying doesn't give us greater right to use the road than pedestrians, but please let us enjoy the advantages of getting places quicker). Yes, there is no law regarding that, but we are British and are supposedly very courteous to those around us, are we not?
Read these from lawyers who advise how pedestrians and motorists should act towards each other. It isn't just me with this view, people in the legal profession share the view too.

You're so fond of rule H2, how about you read rule H1 as well. Rule H1 - It is important that ALL road users are aware of The Highway Code, are considerate to other road users and understand their responsibility for the safety of others. None of this detracts from the responsibility of ALL road users, including pedestrians, cyclists and horse riders, to have regard for their own and other road users’ safety. (I have omitted some of the rule for clarity, but even with the full rule, my point still stands)

Absolutely correct.

No but my concentration levels on road signs go up.
That's when you look at a map ahead of time and use your SatNav. GPS/SatNav doesn't always get it right or the most direct way to your destination, but it will usually get you there. Can a person go for their test if a family member is the teacher n not a driving instructor?
Yes, anyone who has been driving for 3 years in the class of vehicle and is over 21 can teach someone holding a provisional license to drive, so long as the learner is insured and the car displays L-plates. The learner can also go for the test in a family member's car (there are some exceptions to the type of vehicle you can use e.g. a Smart Car is not allowed to be used for test). The only thing you can't do without an instructor is motorway driving. To do this as a learner, you need a qualified ADI and dual controls.

You are correct. Without a red circle, the speed limits on this signs are advisory only and the actual limit is the national speed limit (or other posted limit on traditional signs). Maintaining the standard limit for the road under yellow speed limit signs is perfectly legal.

I thought taxis could use bus lanes. As long as they had a fare.
Didnt need to do dodgey u turn
I have a theory about all the weird traffic schemes, cycle lanes and so on that you refer to. We do need somebody to do traffic planning, so councils hire one or more people to do this. All is fine for the first year or two, as they fix all the issues in their area. Now, though, they have a dilemma: do they admit that there's nothing left for them to do, and lose their jobs - or do they keep inventing crazier and crazier schemes to justify their continued employment? I think you can guess which they will do, and that completely explains the many bonkers road layouts we encounter daily.
I think there's a lot of jobs where they eventually start ""innovating"" so they can keep their jobs, that's probably how the term "enshittification" comes up so much these days, just this example is a smaller scale, still money driven but only cause mans doesn't want to lose their job lmao.
sorry to say cyclists DO pay to be on the road - roads are paid for by general taxation, the VED is based on emissions and so you are taxed on that, it isn't 'road tax' and hasn't been 'road tax' for an awful long time.

Furthermore, most will also have a car that would cause more damage than their bike for that journey.
@Dalesmanable but they still pay nothing to ride on the road.
@@thelondondashcam so what? Do you think a road tax for cycles is in the least bit practical?
