The lie detector system isn't always true, the person could be nervous answering a question and it could say that they lied
it should be called a nervousness detector. it doesn't detect lies. at all. kind of just guessing at it. but videos like this reinforce the idea that you can't lie to one and get away with it when in reality all you have to do is relax

Roxer yeah there are a lot of studies that outline how unreliable these things are. They make for good content though
That is not totally true. Polygraphs are fairly accurate in determining nerve anxiety and lying anxiety. The reaction you feel because of nerves will generally stay the same throughout the test. While the lies will show as irregularities. Also they establish a baseline with questions you answer and purposefully tell the truth and lie. The examiner will also go over all the question they will ask before hand so you are not surprised by any questions. So there will be a difference between nerves and lying. Most of the time when a test is inconclusive it is because they are not able to establish a baseline between when you are suppose to be lying and telling the truth. If they are able to though the test is fairly accurate and whether or not it can be used in the court of law varies from state to state
