This underrated Keeper conceded only 4 goals in 21 matches at anfield in the 78 / 79 season..why few talked about that ? 26 clean sheets in that season...i m waiting to see a keeper doing or equalling that .
As a long loyal Manchester United fan, and even having an elder brother who is a Liverpool fan (who used to rib me mercilessly during this era.. of course) - You are a part of my life just as much as Alex Stepney. I hope you forgive me for all the times I swore about you. RIP and God speed Ray.
My goalkeeping hero growing up in the 70s and when I started playing the only gloves for me were the blue sondico Clemence pro, rest in peace Scunthorpe Liverpool tottenham and England’s no1😥😥
i agree if Becker can come off his line as quick as Ray just to clear the ball away then we will have a new sweeper and sweeper system, then we would once again have a spare defender on the pitch without having to play one like we did in the 70s
Very, very few decent, and likeable men have represented Liverpool FC but like Shanks and Keegan, Clemence was one. Unlike many, he didn't have a bitter or twisted bone in his body. RIP Ray Clemence, a great goalkeeper and an equally nice bloke!!!
My father was alive when Ray Clemence was playing for Liverpool and he always tell me that Ray Ray Clemence was the best goalkeeper he had ever seen and a great LEGEND for Liverpool. Yesterday when I told my dad of Ray Clemence's death he was deeply saddened upon hearing ot and he told me " Son, football has lost A GREAT LEGEND ". My dad afterwards showed me a few videos of Ray Clemence's saves and I was amazed at it. RIP Ray Clemence a Liverpool and Great LEGEND and the BEST GOALKEEPER in the WORLD HISTORY
What a great era for goalkeepers in the old first division...Bonetti / Clemence / Stepney / Shilton / Parkes / Jennings / Wilson et al....all great players and solid pros day in and day out....RIP one of the best.
He was a great player, a superb professional and much more importantly a genuinely nice bloke. One of the greatest players who ever played for England or anyone for that matter. He served his country as a coach and helped to develop his successors in the England goal mouth. My condolences to his family, friends and all the people of Liverpool who will be mourning his loss. Rest In Peace RAY CLEMENCE. 🏴🏴🏴🏴🏴🏴🏴🏴🏴🏴🏴🏴🏴🏴🏴🏴🏴🏴🏴🏴🏴🏴🏴🏴🏴🏴🏴🏴🏴🏴🏴🏴🏴🏴🏴🏴🏴🏴🏴🏴
Yes, a superb keeper and without doubt one of the main reasons Liverpool were so successful in the 1970s. Why they sold him when he was still brilliant is beyond me. Grobelaar showed the occasional flash of brilliance but I think Clemence was far more dependable.
Liverpool didn't want to sell Clemence, it was Clem himself that wanted to leave because he wanted a fresh challenge as he felt he couldn't do anymore with Liverpool because he had won every trophy and accolade he could in football apart from winning the BALON D`OR and the European cup winners cup
It was not just about a new challenge - Clemence was in his 30's when he left Liverpool and was thinking about his financial security. Spurs offered to double his wages so he left. It was similar reasons to why Kevin Keegan left Liverpool.
It's a sad day when a great like Ray Clemence passes. He was arguably the best of his era and was definitely my inspiration as a keeper in the 70s and as a Liverpool fan he features in so many of my favourite memories. Walk on!
The best in the world bar non for a period in the mid70's to early 80's. I'm a Newcastle fan and remember the 77/78 European cup finals well. Better than Shilton and a lot calmer as well. Those were the days that no matter which club you supported, when Liverpool played in europe, you watched in awe, and always watched. As a football fan first and foremost their game in the 77 quarters against St. Etienne at Anfield was simply the most gripping game i've ever watched. RIP Ray
I felt he was better than Shilton he was more of an all round goalkeeper. Shilton was fantastic excellent reflexes, but it was a well known fact in those days that Clemence was better in the air. There wasn't much between the pair of them.
Sad day today Ray clemmett. ⚽🏆rest in peace and Des O'Connor🎤😎 rest in peace two of the great gone today but not forgotten amen❗ what a.. iclub heaven must be❗
Rest in peace to the best goalkeeper Liverpool have had and ever will have .legend is a word banded round to often to people who sometimes don’t deserve it .in this case it is deserved the man was and will always be a legend god speed ray 😥😥
Over a 1000 career appearances, most clean sheets of any goalkeeper in football worldwide. Only 16 goals conceded in 42 games. My god he was imo along with Yashin, the greatest goalkeepers ever
No wonder Ron Greenwood, then England Manager, couldnt choose between Clemence and Shilton. It's a bit like waiting for a bus, waiting ages for one then two come at the same time lol Watching videos on the two keepers just makes it hard to choose between the two, especially when you add Southall into the fold as well in the early 80's ( I know he played for Wales, but three great keepers playing in England at the same time )
Don't forget his other position he played in and made his own at Liverpool, we had no need for the use of a sweeper system as Ray played that role to perfection, and he was left to do it because of his speed in which he came off his line, as he also acted as a spare defender by taking up that role as sweeper, can you imagine the look in eyes of the strikers when they saw him coming towards them as he put fear in to their eyes on many occasions, also whenever he faced a penalty he never ever moved off his line too early always after the ball had actually been kicked unlike most GKs in todays game, he should have been Knighted for all his achievements, R.I.P Ray Clemence our sympathy goes out to your family and friends at this very sad time, 3 football clubs will be mourning his passing today, Scunthorpe, Liverpool and Spurs fans will be saddened by this news
He was Liverpool’s greatest goal keeper and the best in the world at that time R.I.P Ray Clemence you will be greatly missed.
Here here... still remember the puffed up cheeks when he wellied the ball out of his hands
Rest in peace Ray Clemence we love you all of Millwall fans love you
RIP Ray. One of my 70s football heroes & a Liverpool legend - Leicester fan.
Omg, 28 clean sheets in one season. The greatest thing was that he missed only six league games in 11 yrs.
Such loyal players. 👍
RIP.
Ray Clemence, Steve Heighway and the Kop are why I fell in love with LFC! RIP Clem.
Always wanted to be Ray when playing football as a kid. Rip from a West Ham fan
So sorry to hear Ray has passed away. Fantastic goalkeeper. One of the best and a true gentleman. My condolences to his family. R.I.P Ray.⚘⚘⚘❤
One of my childhood heroes.
RIP Ray
An absolute legend.
With banks and Shilton, one of the three biggest in England! Regards from Brazil
This underrated Keeper conceded only 4 goals in 21 matches at anfield in the 78 / 79 season..why few talked about that ? 26 clean sheets in that season...i m waiting to see a keeper doing or equalling that .
it will never be beaten, Alisson might equal it if he stays at the club long enough and has the same sort of season he had in 2019
Most underrated goalkeeper of all time. Most decorated European goalkeeper at club level and goalkeeper with most clean sheets in football history.
Guillermo Bello You're right Clemence was real quality
yes he was and not only as a GK but as a sweeper as well
what about bookings and sending's off, as i don't think i can recall of him ever getting sent off or getting booked while playing for the mighty reds
@Oddjob6120 clemence was underrated compared to most GKs in his day, the media use to write more about Stepney than they did of clem
Liverpool Legend. I still love a green jersey to this day. RIP say hello to Bill and Bob upstairs
One of the best all time, helped set the club up and paved the way
As a long loyal Manchester United fan, and even having an elder brother who is a Liverpool fan (who used to rib me mercilessly during this era.. of course) - You are a part of my life just as much as Alex Stepney. I hope you forgive me for all the times I swore about you.

Ray Clemence 1948-2020.
RIP Legend
Phenomenal keeper and instrumental to the success of Liverpool in the 70's. I swear Allison Becker so reminds me of Clemence
But not in Clems league
i agree if Becker can come off his line as quick as Ray just to clear the ball away then we will have a new sweeper and sweeper system, then we would once again have a spare defender on the pitch without having to play one like we did in the 70s
@@ianharrison2490 of course Becker is in Clems league and he's only in his 2nd full season, also Becker as won the one trophy that Clem never did
Very, very few decent, and likeable men have represented Liverpool FC but like Shanks and Keegan, Clemence was one. Unlike many, he didn't have a bitter or twisted bone in his body. RIP Ray Clemence, a great goalkeeper and an equally nice bloke!!!

When you're Liverpools best keeper and Spurs' best keeper at the same time, that should say it all.
Very sad news. One of the real greats. RIP
One of the best keepers ever❤️😎

It wasn't Liverpool, Ray said that he felt he needed a new challenge. Hence why he left for Tottenham

I'm an Everton supporter but I just have to say that Ray Clemence was a magnificent keeper. No Neville Southall, mind, but pretty special nonetheless.

Better than Shilton all day long
Banks, clemence and buffon best in the world in their time.
I remember those two BRILL penalty saves...However I the GAFF for england v scotland in 1977?
No wonder Ron Greenwood, then England Manager, couldnt choose between Clemence and Shilton. It's a bit like waiting for a bus, waiting ages for one then two come at the same time lol

Ray clemence was better than Shooting especially in the air and penalty shootout. He was dependable and those clean sheets is great
Clem was a great keeper particularly at Liverpool ! Shilton was better and greenwood realised that by 82 !
Legend
In my opinion there was nothing to choose between Ray clemence and Peter shilton two brilliant keepers they were equal
I'm trying to find a pair of 1970s red/white Ray Clemence goalkeeping gloves, can anyone help please?
lfc and england have clemance shilton to very good keepers for years what problime two have
Joan Museeuw, vous connaissez??°0)

Simon Mignolet will be the future Ray Clemence
+Ken Fox Police Not even remotely close in this or any other universe.
Karius will be liverpools best soon enough 💪🏼💪🏼
you may want to reconsider your career as a talent scout now :(
Loooooooooool
He had catlike reflexes. Something like a handball keeper

What goalie Ray Clemence was better than Peter Shilton, plus not wearing gloves just using his bare hands legend.
