There are absolutely no tutorials on UA-cam about polishing silver, maybe I just dont know how to look, but how do you polish and "tumble" silver wire wrapped products?
Hm, do I sense a tutorial idea? ;) It depends on what you mean by polishing! If you just want to remove tarnish, I like these large jewelry polishing cloths (or something similar) amzn.to/31nFiOF . The white interior portion contains chemicals in the cloth that help break down and remove tarnish from silver and other metals, while the outside gray portion is pure cotton to remove any chemical residue and buff the finish. If you need to remove something a bit more tenacious, like minor residue from soldering or an antiquing treatment, something like these polishing pads is great: amzn.to/2YPvfjX If you need to deal with something like big nicks in the wire, or heavy residue from soldering/fire scale, you'll need to actually sand or file using something like this amzn.to/31g21vY or this amzn.to/2YN6C7k . You can also of course get mini sanding and polishing tips on a rotary tool/dremel (amzn.to/31ow6JI) which is much faster and easier, though you have to be careful not to overdo it and remove too much. And it might be more of an investment than some people are ready for! Tumbling (with a tool like this amzn.to/2KjC6xQ loaded with steel jeweler's shot amzn.to/31iYbCr and warm water + a drop of dish soap) is by far the easiest way to get a lovely polished, work hardened finish to the entire surface of your jewelry. But it's an even bigger investment, and really only necessary if you do much metalworking/soldering. With tumbling you do have to be very careful that it won't damage any stones you have in your piece, and you also can't tumble any plated metals. You can sometimes get away with tumbling silver or gold filled for short periods, but you run the risk of wearing through the precious metal.
@@FantasiaElegance well, I will see artists take fine grit sand paper, and scrub a piece of jewelry, and as a beginner I thought "wouldn't that ruin the piece?", and I also read things like "if you tumble it you'll get a better finish" but what does that mean? Through a delicate piece into a freakin rock tumbler? And none of this is explained. I can get a dremel tool with a polishing kit, but is that the best method? And also, I am a historical reenactor, so bringing a dremel to A festival is not an option. So I would like to know how to polish, and why people use sand paper, and what tumbling is.
There are videos all over showing how to polish with a dremel tool, but I dont see artists doing this in there video. And they will even make a tutorial, with pictures at the end saying "before tumble" "and after tumble" but dont tell what what "tumble" means. Or how you do it.
I recently fell into the wire art algorithm on UA-cam. You have a way of teaching that meshes well with my way of learning. I’ve been using inexpensive tools while I tested the water. Now that I know I enjoy it, I want some better tools. I went to your channel looking for something else when I found this gem based on your vast experience. I’m SO glad you posted this. The few minutes you spent with flush cutters alone were exactly what I needed.
As a soon to be beginner I went from video to video completely confused by the differing advice from reasonable to ultra expensive tools. After watching this video with your fantastic teaching skills then entranced by your creation of the green turquoise cabochon necklace and earrings I made my decision. You are awesome and I'm tickled pink my tools won't cost me an arm and leg after all. Thank you. I look forward to all of your lessons.
Thanks so much for your tutorials. I have been doing some very basic wire wrapping but have some retention issues and find watching your videos helps my self confidence and allows me to continue working with wire.
I cant wait to start wire wrapping and I am thankful I'll have your help. This is brand new for me so I'll need all the help I can get! Thanks, your awesome :}
thanks so much for ALL your videos! you do a great job!! but, this one especially, i am new to wire work & am not very good at it LOL! but hoping with good tools it will help me! i have ordered all of them & can't wait to get started!!
Im just starting on my jewelry journey and wanted to ask, is there any wire that will not tarnish or turn skin a different color? Thanks! New subscriber here ☺️
I want to learn to wire-wrap some crystals I have so I can wear them instead of have them in my pockets, after I learn the basics I might start a small side business selling on etsy as a sole proprietor
I don't personally use bent nose pliers, but I've found both Xuron and Wubbers to be good quality and economical brands, so I'd start by looking there on Amazon. Or if you want something higher end, you could look at Tronex or Lindstrom :)
Hi Susie! That's something I'm in the process of learning, too :) Once I have a better handle on it, I will definitely be making videos featuring faceted gems set with wire. This one's not a tutorial, but you can see how I set a heart-shaped faceted gemstone here: ua-cam.com/video/k1PPHyIWeD4/v-deo.html
