▼About the Oyabana Gion Festival This is one of the Gion Festivals (Yasaka Festivals) held around the town during this period, and is a rare festival in which a riverside ritual is held at night. After 7pm, a portable shrine that has been paraded around the area comes down to the riverbank.
Soon, at the signal of the event, the mikoshi, carried by the men who were naked except for their underwear, was carried into the Arakawa River. When the men were in the water up to their waists, they started to massage the mikoshi, and they vigorously toppled it over into the water, and sometimes even rotated it in the water, a true "purification ritual." The heroic sight was very impressive and drew the attention of the spectators.
The floats that are pulled up and down the river and the heroic music that is played there are also a source of pride for the local area.
