The reason Tiana's family (and a grown-up tiana) live like that is because this movie takes place around the 1920s-1930s it wouldn't matter how much big daddy pays them, they would not be allowed in the richer places due to segregation and racist stereotypes as well as the depression
Sorry bro (or sis), that's a lie. Search for Madam C.J. Walker (first black women millionaire in USA in the 1920s) or Bessie Coleman, first black women acrobat pilot (and one of the best), she had money (a lot of money). And I remember reading a book talking about Tulsa, aka "Black Wall Street". Yes there was a segregation, but that didn't stop the hustlers, hard and smart work (combine) always succeeds brother (or sister).
I had a comment explaining this comment (which is a lie), there were lots of rich black people that time. But UA-cam deleted my comment, looks like the truth is not allowed in this platform.
Ok jokes aside, Charlotte is actually amazing for not being a bratty typa princess. Sure she was spolied but never bragged about it to tiana and wasnt mad when she found out when naveen liked tiana. Their duo is iconic
Not so fun fact the film originally had Charlotte as a jerk and Tiana (who was called Maddy then) was working as their maid, luckily this was changed as there were also some unfortunate historical connotations
4:19 Fun fact: Everything Lottie wears is pink (sometimes with red accents). Tiana's dress here is blue. It can be argued, then, that Lottie kept it/had it made specifically for Tiana.
@@alesabelen1558We are talking about an animated movie here. The color definitely is the no 1 clue there. With the fitment only being a second smaller clue 😊
2:43 I think the reason Tiana didn't make that much money so far was because she wanted to earn it fairly, meaning by working, and she probably refused any free money. So since Charlotte hired her to make food and gave her the money, that can be considered fair money since she's working for it, idk
Not to mention this takes place in around the 1920s where not a lot of black families like Tiana’s lived in these small towns with poor houses no matter how much money they make
This also can be seen when Charlotte give Tiana the dress. Because who are we kidding; Charlotte is acting like it's her own dress, so Tiana doesn't feel like it's a handout, while actually having a dress made for Tiana. Charlotte has Tianas back but respects her enough to also not make her feel like she is getting handouts just because she has a rich friend. Blue is not Charlottes color. And the dress is quite obviously fitted for Tiana not Charlotte.
They probably didn’t live in a necessarily “poor” neighborhood, just a black neighborhood, a neighborhood that got little to no funding at all by the government. This movie takes place in 1920s America. This was a time where there were “colored” waiting rooms and water fountains. This was a time where there were racially segregated prisons and white and black people were not allowed to marry, a time where black people were forced to sit in the back of the bus. Slavery has only been abolished for 60 years during that time. But hey… That’s just a theory, a FILM THEORY.
You've hit it on the head. Forced racial segregation made black people live in lower quality housing, in poorer neighborhoods. It would've been next to impossible for all but the WEALTHIEST black people to be able to live in better housing at that time.
My thoughts as well! I feel like The Princess and the Frog might have some things better understood when keeping in mind what segregation laws and American history was like at the time...
YES! She's clearly a spoiled rich brat, but she still never looked down on Tiana for being in a different class than her. She didn't know what Tiana was going through but she still supported her anyway and understood that she actually had a relationship with Naveen and even though she wouldn't be a princess, her friend would be happy. Top tier character.
I loved Charlotte! She does fit the pampered rich girl archetype, but she’s not rude or snobby like most characters like her are. That’s what I love abt her
4:18 REALLL not to mention that Charlotte's whole room n prob closets are full pink so my theory is that the blue dress she have is specially for Tiana
she probably had a “phase” were she wore blue dresses (a majority of “pink girls” do) and now has a bunch of extra. plus i wouldn’t be surprised if she bought an entire boutique and that blue dress was included
This is my favorite Disney movie (besides Lilo & stitch and Wall-E)because Tiana isn't royalty and works hard to obtain her dreams. And that attitude rubbed onto Naveen, making him a better person. Honestly, she, Belle, and Mulan are the best princesses because of the work they put in to gain the title. Not only that, but they are the best role models to people, teaching everyone about hard work, dedication, and sacrifice. (I ain't dissing the other princesses. I'm just saying)
Definitely this. I wish we got more time with her as a human, though. Because not only is she one of the best role models out of the Disney princess lineup, she is also the most stylish and has some of the best dresses in all of Disney.
I feel that her being a frog showed that Naveen fell for who she was, not how she looked and vice versa. Its how I see it anyway, I wonder how Beauty and the Beast would've been like if they were both beasts?
😭OMG I can't with the "she beg like an asian who don't want a beating from her mother" & "the baldi with the sideburns is the catfish". Very funny & sometimes insightful commentary! The meme references were also awesome. Great video!
This has always been my Favorite Disney Princess Movie primarily because it shows the archetype of a hardworking Black Woman in America during the 1920s, in the midst of racism and hardship. The idea that she always stayed motivated to work towards her restaurant after getting married (becoming a princess) says a lot about how Black Women are able to pave ways throughout society. 👸🏾👸🏾👸🏾
0:38 / It’s because of racism, this was set in the 1920s and thus black people were paid unfairly without any consequences since they were still very unpopular and treated unfairly.

'Cause aside from the fact we really don't how much Tiana's parents were _actually_ making (and indeed, the fact that they had to work so many jobs should indicate that it probably wasn't as much as it may seem), the one thing that you overlooked there is something that's super important to understand. It wouldn't matter how "nice" the one richest White guy in town seems; Tiana's family is Black, and they are living in the American South in the Jim Crow era. No single "good" rich White individual (or even group, for that matter) is going to be enough to change the systems around them built to keep Black folks where they were. Furthermore, we don't know how much Tiana's family was providing for or helping out their neighbors. "One meal" is all we see, but that doesn't mean that's all they do. Black neighborhoods, especially close-knit ones like the one Tiana seemed to have grown up in, tend to be very communal. They know full well how fellow Black people struggle, so were/are more likely to be willing to share what they have whenever they can. And that includes when they don't have much of anything to share. I get that there was probably a serious disconnect for you. But believe it or not, the general reality depicted at the beginning of the movie is something that's very, _very_ _real_ .
