If you never have, I'd recommend watching the music video for Just.
Not as a reaction video. Just for yourself.
It was how I discovered Radiohead back in 95 and is still my favourite ever video of theirs.
Subscribed
More Radiohead please.......also listen to A perfect Circle and Tool it's progressive eargasm.
pls play dmc 5, you won't regret
So Bloodborne? instant sub
The Bends may sound like a standard rock album from the 90s, but it’s always feels like a ‘home’ for us radiohead fans whenever we feel tired of listening so much music. it has its own place in our heart.
Very well said, friend
Taufiq Hidayat speak for yourself man. Love Radiohead but the bends, while being a great 90’s rock album and a good foreshadow of what will makes Radiohead amazing in the future is still a little dated and simple at times. 7 or 8 out of 10 for me
Yes. This is my album that I go to when I just want to chill and not focus to much on what's going on. Just simply beautiful.
Sidekick 821 Judging and comparing with following Radiohead discographies , yes, it is indeed a simple album and that simplicity is what makes us love this album.
Taufiq Hidayat can’t really generalize for an entire fan base of millions. I love Radiohead to pieces and listen to a lot of music but the bends isn’t much to me. Peaked with Street Spirit tbh
Listening to The Bends: "What the heck? 3 chord song?" And I'm sitting over here like: "Wait for Just man...33 chord song" lol
Same lmfao
Lol I was thinking the same thing.
Fun fact : 'Just' started by jonny and Thom trying to fit as many chords as possible into one song, the band liked it so much they put it in The Bends!
@@jacvic0790 You know, i checked the song "Shake me down" by CageTheElephant
And i thought it would be like Just with too manh chords, but... They repeat it
But if You don't think about it, looks like too many diferent chords
1:40 Planet Telex..
4:30 The Bends...
7:35 High And Dry...
9:02 Fake Plastic Trees...
11:51 Bones...
14:11 (Nice Dream)...
I’m just glad someone else loves Nice Dream. That’s like one of my favorites and everyone seems to sleep on it like a Bad Dream.
Na. Nice dream is a fantastic song. Don't doubt yourself!
A true masterpiece
nice dream is one of my favourite songs, by anyone. always a go to song when in a certain mood. love it.
First Radiohead song I heard (i didnt know creep was theirs). I first heard it when they used it for How I Met Your Mother. Been a radiohead fan since then.
I love nice dream. Reminds me of porcupine tree!
The Bends (getting sick as a result of rising too fast) is a thematic metaphor (or mostly British humour) for Radiohead's early success with Creep. After Pablo Honey they really wanted to prove they were more than just a one-hit-wonder and strove to create a markedly complete work where a higher standard ran throughout the entire CD. (plus, in those days, if your second album wasn't any good your label would drop you and your career was basically over)
A few interesting things happened on/with The Bends: 1. Stanley Donwood (Dan Rickwood), a friend of Thom's from art school, was asked to provide the packaging designs. He and Thom (Thom's artistic pseudonym is Tchock, Dr. Tchock, or together they're called The White Chocolate Farm) have created all the artwork together ever since. (The special edition Amnesiac booklet actually won a Grammy).
2. Radiohead recorded one song with a young producer called Nigel Godrich, and he's been their George Martin ever since. (He was also part of Thom's side band called Atoms for Peace)
3. They started their website, which didn't amount to much at the time but later iterations contained lyrical ramblings and lots of insight into their thought/creative process.
4. They developed more of the underground/cult following that they preferred. The mainstream still knew them for Creep, but The Bends really started building the foundation of a secure fan base. (of course, with OK Computer they basically just blew up everywhere)
5. There were strong videos released for this album. High and Dry had two videos made, one for the US market and one for the UK. The US version doesn't really capture the feeling of the song but it's a pretty cool Tarantino-esque short film nonetheless. No one knows what the man at the end of the Just video says. Street Spirit is greyscale and impactful and the Fake Plastic Trees video really does the trick.
6. At this point they didn't have much time in studio, because they were still (mostly) controlled by their label, but they did manage to record enough songs to create a few interesting B-Sides. It's always fun to see what does or doesn't make it on the album.
Yeah, so this was definitely a more innocent time for Radiohead, however a few important things happened that set the stage and gave them the confidence to realize their full creative potential in the future.
Fake Plastic Trees got me into Radiohead. Absolutely love that song
Street Spirit (Fade Out) is almost as beautiful as How to disappear completely! You gonna love it!
Perfect! just waiting for:
Just
My Iron Lung
Bullet Proof...I Wish I Was, and
Street spirit
YOU DO IT TO YOUR SELF! YOU DO!
Fade out
Maurcio Muñoz the chorus to bulletproof is one of the most emotional things I’ve ever listened to honestly. It’s beautiful
@@willgoodwin-moore947 I absolutely love Bullet Proof, it's such a beautiful powerful emotional song.
AGAAAAIIIIIIIN ...Fade out.
"It's like they're using a simpler language to communicate the same complex emotions"
Perfect description
Absolutely
Yes. I have often referred to this phenomenon to my nephew as... happy/sad memories.
It's the feeling of wistful longing you have for a happy moment you can't have back. Or a moment you know could have been special if you only had the courage to take a chance.
So emblematic.
The Bends: *exists*
Nightwalk: oooh that's so 90s
Well, it is.
The King Of Limbs From The Basement please!!!
Edit: Also, Bones sounds straight out of Showbiz
ACM1PT512 yes!! Def sounds like it fits perfectly in that record
I mean showbiz is a really radiohead influenced album
bones chorus has the same riff as sober chorus
@@Neorigg I was gonna say that!
@@Neorigg other way round
street spirit is another fantastic song on this album you should look forward to
Oh my god, Just and My Iron Lung opening the second video is gonna be frickin amazing!
The only good thing that horrible "Best of Radiohead" compilation album made by EMI did was using Just as it's opening track, it felt somewhat inspired to begin with that song instead of just putting up the singles in the order they were released and call it a day.
My iron lungs is my least favourite song on the bends, the mixing on that song is trash, and not that great
Please listen to In Rainbows Disk 2, it's great and I think you will love it, nice vids btw
In rainbows Disk 2 is really good. But Also I would like he will reaction to ok not ok.
For sure. But he has to listen to the other main albums first!
Also: listen to what you want.
It's amazing
Ok computers EP's
Oh, and from The Bends, the most successful and popular song was Fake Plastic Trees for sure! Radiohead still playing this one in now days, it's such a classic for the Band (Like how Showbizz is for Muse)
When I was getting into Radiohead few years ago The Bends was my favourite album. It’s both simple and creative. Love it to date!
The bends is widely believed to be a metaphor for the shock to the system from their sudden rise to fame. Additionally My Iron Lung is thought to make reference to Creep and how they can't get away from it due to its popularity.
I would really really really really love a reaction or review of Grace by Jeff Buckley which is cited as a major influence of both Thom Yorke and Matt Bellamy. Yorke allegedly wrote Fake Plastic Trees after seeing him in concert.
This is one of the brighter sounding of the Radiohead albums. But God damnit, I've got a ball of tears in my chest listening to Nice Dream, Planet Telex, and Fake Plastic trees. 😭
Man, i love your reactions soooo much. Just wanted to tell you that. It's like listening to Radiohead for the very first time (even though I've listened to their albums hundreds and hundreds of time) and that's basically the best gift that someone could give me lol Sometimes I wish I could erase all of their music from my head so I can enjoy them with the glow of newness that makes everything more special
I think your comments during and after Fake Plastic Trees are genius talk about hitting the nail on the head that is why I watch these reaction videos to get some insight that I either missed or could not articulate myself great job.
Thank you so much for the kind comment!
You deserve it but i'm still a little pissed at you for not doing the KOL from the basement yet you are going to have a blast peeling back the insane amount of layers they laid down just the percussion alone is master level never mind the other instruments I really am looking forward to it I hope you compare it to In Rainbows from the Basement it is fun to do.@@NightwalkReal
Thx for all the reaction videos,i really enjoyed them. I hope that your videos doesn't get blocked and you get the monetization you deserved. Love from IND
Erick Gultom thanks so much :)
You should check out the b-side Talk Show Host from this era of Radiohead. Its a longtime fan favorite and I think you might get a kick out of it. Anyways looking forward to the rest of your reactions, particularly Just.
Maquilladora is awesome as well
Shocks me how many people overlook this album in their discography. The trifecta of ground breakers like Street Spirit, Plant Telex, and Fake Plastic Trees... but also the hidden masterpieces like Nice Dream, Bullet Proof, and Bones(Best song on the album imo). This album fitted perfectly with the times when it was released in 95.. and next to Ok Computer, I believe this is their most consistent and accessible album to date. It’s the “Ol’ Reliable”of Radiohead albums.
very well said!
I just can't get into the super-90s sound to it. I can recognize great writing, but a bunch of it is wasted on dated arrangements. I really wonder what the Bends would sound like if the band decided to produce those songs in the 21st century.
@@k-leb4671 agreed, many of the songs sound nice but feels very dated, lyrics are still great
He literally looks like the guy in the bend's album art. Plus reaction after listening to this.
The Bends is the album you can’t help but sing along to.
Starts crying uncontrollably during fake plastic trees*
Yes, finally! This is one of my favorite Radiohead albums. I hope you enjoy it!
PS, I love your reactions! Keep up the great work.
so you're the reason he chose the bends over amnesiac!! :(
I love how he started dancing when Thom sings "we don't have any real friends"
Watching you react to Fake Plastic Trees was awesome. I think that was the face of a lot of kids in the 90s when they first heard it.
You’re hearing this knowing what you know in 2019. Imagine hearing it for the first time in 1995.
I think you were spot on with (Nice Dream) - I think the brackets in the title suggest that!
Hey, great reaction man. Also I really like the idea of you having a second channel for gaming. Hope you do a lets play or maybe a first impression reaction (kinda like this reaction).
I really hope you can listen to each element of the songs with those studio monitors
So crazy that i watched you react to now almost all Radiohead albums (wich is my fav band btw) i love that at this point you already got their sound and now get to see where they came from
12:10 When playing "Bones" live, Jonny would get down on his knees and manually slow his tremolo pedal down. I spent years looking for a tremolo pedal where slowing down the rate was a feature.
This is one of the Radiohead albums I find myself not listening to that much any more but watching this reminded me how much I used to love it. Planet Telex, Fake Plastic Trees, Just and Street Spirit are some of their all time best songs. Takes me back to the old days.
I liked how you mentioned (Nice Dream) being the blueprint for OK Computer, it really has many of the elements from that album. The choppy drum sound in Planet Telex is another very OK Computer-like thing for me. I'd say that My Iron Lung and Street Spirit that you will be hearing on the second half are the other "blueprints" here. Great reaction as always, and your harmonizing along in the last song was actually really funny but appropiate.
I look forward to see you reacting STREET SPIRIT
It's funny to hear this be called a nonstandard Radiohead album. Back when Kid A first came out, I worked with a guy who loved Radiohead and viewed the album as a "parenthetical work" because it veered from the rock and roll sound. He wanted them to do what the Beatles did with the White Album and give us another straightforward rock album, by which he meant something like The Bends.
Even the Bends to me is highly inventive, though. They've already got a uniqueness that's hard to put your finger on.
best radiohead album for me, i love nice dream :)
The guitar part on nice dream probs remind you of subterranean homesick alien.
Street Spirit, Bulletproof and Nice Dream are my personal faves from this album. although its all good.
You should totally give Porcupine Tree a listen though!! pls pls pls
I have an idea to get around the copyright issue - don't upload any of the song playing on your vid, just upload your reaction in full with a timer in the corner showing what part of the song you're up to. this way we can listen on spotify whilst watching you
I like your vocals, you should do your own version of Nice Dream
Can’t wait part 2 cause the songs to come are awesome.
Glad you like Radiohead - but with them you never get 'straight up' rock! By their standards 'The Bends' is fairly conventional, but that doesn't mean it IS conventional. Sometimes when you think they are getting 'conventional' they go and then remind you that you're listening to a Radiohead album! I think this is why people loved them as they did rock, but a different kind of rock to everyone else; and put in weird sounds, and unsettling tones - creating an overall feel like no other band. It was one of the biggest selling albums in the UK, back in 1997. Still sounds top notch in 2020!!
My favourite Radiohead album
this is the album that got me into radiohead back in the 90's. it's probably the best album for someone to start with
Thank you. Been excited for you returning.
Thom recorded the vocals for Fake Plastic Trees late at night, drunk on wine, after just seeing Jeff Buckley live in concert, who inspired his powerful delivery.
This is so 90s indeed.
My favourite Radiohead album...
Stanley Donwood created the album cover using a CPR mannequin and recording it on an 80s video camera.
Fake plastic trees and nice dream two best on album imo and two of the best songs ever written, glad u liked them
AMNESIAC TIME POGGERS
Next one for sure!
My experience with radihead whas like this: first ok computer, then kid a, then amnesiac, then the bends, by that time the bends was like a bastard son to radiohead discotraphy but over time i grew to understand and apreciate this album, it definitely is a radiohead album and being so guitar oriented music is not the theme, its how this guitar orinted music sounds, the bends its still very different from the rest of 90's rock, i love this album now.
I CAN'T WAIT FOR JUST
And street spirit, I feel you'll see their roots most in that song. Too bad you wont be hearing The Tourist and Permanent Daylight, now THOSE were ahead of their time
The second half of this album really comes alive for me
Wait till you hear the next song "Just" probably my favourite song on this album.
This is the song that got me into Radiohead in the first place back in
The mid 90's...love it😘
The best reaction and analysis of The Bends, since I've been watching youtube videos since 2006 !!! I loved. I recommend Music Radar Clan, it's a youtuber that gives you information about Radiohead and each of its albums in deep detail.
One of the best albums
(nice dream) is amazing
both (Nice Dream) and Planet Telex are my absolute favorite Radiohead songs
The bends is the second and last album which is "accessible" for pop/rock listeners, a bridge before Ok computer and the Actual Radiohead, beautiful melody, sharp guitars, last time Thom really Sing and write in a "naïve" way..... before they decided for good or bad to clearly doing Art and go away from pop music format !
You're a good singer!
which monitors do you have? I have jbl lsr305s and they often sound better than my headphones. Also, it would be great if you could do funeral by arcade fire. I've seen some other people recommend it to you.
My favorite band and my favorite videogame. Can't help but sub + like.
Hope you could listen to the "from the basement" versions of king of limbs and in rainbows, you're gonna love it :)
I recently listened to the whole Grace album by Jeff Buckley for the first time, and I could sense Thom was heavily inspired.
Btw if you haven’t heard Jeff Buckley, you’re in for a treat
Now it's up to Amnesiac and The King of Limbs (their most underrated album, it takes a lot of listens to understand it and get into it)
Still missing Pablo Honey! Hahahahahahha xD
@@davimag2071 Ah... Right. I always forget about it. I'm wondering why... 🤔
@@simonebevini4357 I know why...you think it sucks right :) ? I'm a rare specimen who likes Pablo Honey xD Yeah! It's an awesome Alternative Rock album in my opinion :D The last track "Blow Out" for me it's a hidden gem from them, and it's a top 10 of RH for me.
@@davimag2071 Yeah Blow Out kinda eclipses the other tracks. On the whole album I think it is a very good 90s alternative rock album, but a bad Radiohead because it isn't as emotional and creative as their other albums from Ok Computer to AMSP. Just my thoughts
@@simonebevini4357 Nice! Yeah I understand this, PH it's like a children RH stuff when you compare to all others, but Blow Out, my gosh, I absolutely love the vocals, lyrics, the riffs, and the freaking awesome massive violent guitars attack in the end. (detail : Notice that Ed was already doing some ambients/ atmosphere on this track.)
My favorite songs from the Bends are My iron lung, just and planet Telex.
Amnesiac is my favourite, but I think that The Bends is really underrated because of what came after, I think it would be much more highly regarded if they split up after it.
best Radiohead album!!
0:00 Jaime is that you???
Didn't you notice a very big similarity between Bones and Sober by Muse?
I definitely think this is their best album though. Its got sophistication but its simpler, a lot more fun with its pop and folk influences. A song like high and dry or just... CLASSICS
funny how a moon shape pools finishing track was right from this era. this sounds like the stone age
BLOODBORNE!! love it, favorite game, holy shit
Despite the polar difference in sound, I feel like The Bends and A Moon Shaped Pool Are thematically the two closest Radiohead albums
whenever i want some 90's vibe i listen to this album
i hope you like Street Spirit, i think its the best of the album and one of their deepest/saddest songs
Strange... other music reaction youtubers seem to get the whole song in unedited...
No lie: St. Vincent's Masseduction is a great album. The Pixies's Doolittle is great, too
I think if you like Radiohead you should react to Think Tank by Blur Or Demon Days by Gorillaz next. Both amazing albums.
Amnesiac Lost!!! I can't believe it!
The Bends!
I will just say = just
And also Bullet Proof and of course Street Spirit/Fade Out
Amnesiac is sooooooo much better! Which of you suggested the bends!!!???
Bloodborne is my favourite game ever made! The Bends is also a pretty good album
My problem with radiohead ablums is that i always love a vew song and think the rest is sheit. Like i feel bad buying a full album for 3/4 songs
And this is why ppl say muse copied radiohead.
you should checkout Grizzly Bear - Shields
Johnny G says they're his favourite band too. Similar but more funky
Nobodys telling anything about 'sulk' 😂😂😂
Do Pablo Honey!!!
React to some Deftones pls.
I dont get the bloodborn thing, but this is a great reaction to the bends
Bloodborne hype!
Can you react to the Avalanches?
React to To Pimp A Butterfly next
dud. it would be so lovely if you did oknotok (the 20th anniversary bonusdisc of ok computer)
Reacting to The Bends in 2k19? LOL
Where have you been all this years?
The first time I heard Radiohead, it was in 1993, I think, (am 45) then in a cheap newspaper in the United States I saw the cover of the Bends, in 1995 and I did not pay attention, I only remember their videos, especially High and Dry. Years after I saw the video of Paranoid android -in 1997- and the one of Kharma Police, and then, I never heard anything, it simply did not interest me. Then, in 2009, in a Tower Records I saw In Rainbows and BOOM!, I had to buy everything, -everything I could buy, obviously-, in short, in short, Radiohead is after Pink Floyd the best thing that could happen to my ears.
