I envy anyone who is about to read their first Sherlock Holmes book. You enter the world of late Victorian London, go on adventures, and always return to the cozy flat at 221B Baker Street, where Mrs. Hudson does all the housework and serves all the meals. I hope you enjoy the stories as much as I did when I first found them over forty years ago.
@@noteworthyfictionThis is an excellent place to start. It's his earliest book of short stories, and they're some of the best. If you read a few and don't like them, you can just stop without having invested a lot of time. But the very first book, A Study in Scarlet, is a novel. It'll be fun for you to read if you decide you're a Holmes fan, because it describes how Holmes and Watson first met.
We are kindred spirits! Nothing like a last book haul before a big move! 😂 Fabulous haul! I love the Barnes and Noble classics… even more than the penguin black spines.
Right! Can't move knowing there will be too many empty spaces when you arrive. I too like B&N Classics more than the black spines. My favorites are Modern Library (larger font like B&N, nice pictures on cover, but also super floppy and nice paper). Best part of black spines are the notes, but I rarely reference those on first reads because of spoilers.
Great haul! Used bookstores are my catnip! My favorite is in my hometown (about an hour away), so whether I see my family/go that shop depends on if I'm trying to curb my book buying/trying to avoid my family.
We don't have a lot of used book stores where I live either, but our antique stores have some books. Make sure you check them out. The nearest Half price books or any big store like that is over 2 hours away. We have 3 or 4 small family owned ones but they don't have much.
Good idea! I'll also be looking at thrift stores. Where I currently live our thrift stores have amazing classics collections. People unhaul them but few buy them. All the more dangerous for me!
Yay! I love me a Nicole massive book haul. 😅 You found a mass market paperback of The Instance of the Fingerpost! I've been looking for that. And those Tor classics are so fun! I might have one on my shelf. I'll have to look. I was today years old when I first heard of Georges. Please read that one soon and tell us about it. I'm highly suspicious of never hearing about it. Happy reading!
lol. I love me a Nicole massive book haul too. I did find it in mass market. Usually I'm not a fan of that size, but sometimes it's super satisfying. I am hoping to get to Georges really soon. I also have suspicions and questions about it. Surpressed?bad?amazing? We'll see.
For Ernest Hemingway, you absolutely must read The Old Man and the Sea. I hear so many people say it's boring, but my thoughts are that they aren't reading deep enough. It's such a short book and can be read in one sitting, but it has so many themes that can be discussed with someone else...or just to be thought about by oneself.
Good idea! I know of that one but don't think I've read it. I have a picture of my dad at the beach that I titled that, I don't think he got the joke! I will definitely keep that in mind over the next few weeks.
Black Water sounds like it could be based on the Teddy Kennedy accident. Almost exactly the same thing happened. I wonder if Oates used it as the basis of her novel!
This was so fun to watch!! Whenever you read them ,I hope you enjoy the read📚. Idk if you read this book, but I highly recommend it,it’s called; the perks of being a wallflower. It’s such an incredibly deep and rich read. I’m nearly finishing it;but I’m taking my time reading it;because the importance it has in apart of my life. I watched the movie first before I read the book. But I’m chugging along with reading the book, and I’m enjoying every once of it!!🙇🏻♂️✨
Good luck with your move Nicole! What a great haul. Love those Tor classic covers. An Instance at the Fingerpost and Andersonville are both wonderful, having read them years ago.
That is a disturbing cover on McTeague-eep! I got that one recently because I liked the other Frank NOrris I read: The Octopus and The Pit were verbose but fascinating.
I've never heard of Georges...but now I need a copy. It sounds really good. I only know McTeague as the book that inspired the silent film Greed. In the making of Greed, they tried to put on film absolutely everything in the book...which made the original film 9 hours or more long. It was cut down to just over 2 hours for theatrical release, which was still VERY long in the silent era. Obviously very few people have ever seen the full 9 hour film.
I’ve been wanting to read Fyodor Dostoevsky for a while, but have yet to do so. Best of luck on your move and I totally support your book buying 😂🙌🏻 Gotta take advantage of those good prices.
Good luck with your move! I moved last October from Nebraska to Maine. I lived in my former home in Nebraska for 26 yrs so we had to dump a lot. I parted with a lot of books which made me very sad but it had to be done. I still have 4 large bookshelves full of books that i love.
Thanks for the well wishes. I've been unhauling and reading my shelves for the last 6 mos like crazy. I'm feeling pretty good about where I'm at, but we'll see how I feel after a 4mos separation.
Oh exciting. The Dumas book looks interesting and Miss Macintosh book described as 'the Arabian Nights of American Life.' I hope your new second hand book is as good!
I really enjoyed Sherlock Holmes. All your editions look awesome. Some I haven't heard of. Is that Oates book about Kennedy? Have you ever read The Trumpet Major by T. Hardy? I was thinking of reading that this summer.
From what I've heard, yes, it's about the Kennedy incident. I didn't want to say much more until I've done more research on it. I have not read the Trumpet Major. There's still quite a few of his I haven't gotten to. I'll have to keep an eye out for that one.
Nicole, Have you read The Count of Monte Cristo? If so, I highly recommend reading The Black Count by Tom Reiss. It is about the true count of Dumas's father. I haven't read Georges by Dumas though. I'll need to find a copy. I saw the title of this video and laughed! 😂 Because all serious readers can relate.
I do! It's the only story that highly features the Napoleonic Wars that I like! I've read it twice now. Maybe my standards are too high and I'm secretly comparing all other accounts to Tolstoy's. 🫤
George Du Mariner was pretty anti semitic, I didn't enjoy 'Trilby'. I was reading it last October at the same as Jennifer Brooks, bless her and she didn't like it either.
oh no! Thanks for the heads up. I always wonder with lesser known books and works. Sometimes they're cheesy, some times they're good, and sometimes...they deserve to stay hidden!

Thanks! Do you think this is a good one to start with or should I start with book 1?

@@dorothysatterfield3699 great! Thanks for the insight!
The Cholmondeley surname is pronounced 'Chum-lee' (yes really)
That's crazy! 😂
@@abookhug English pronunciation, designed to confuse the rest of the world! You're welcome. 😂
😂 True. I should have erred on the side of saying fewer letters!

HEY kislux !! I have been watching you for years and im so proud of where you have made it! I love you so much! Also thanks for making my day
My pleasure.
Ohmygosh the capitalization drives me insane as well. Amazing classics haul! I also have that same edition of Wives and Daughters and I love it.
Yes, the need to keep the irregular capitalization and spelling to annotated editions. I personally find it adds nothing to the reading experience.
Great book haul! I’m always excited when someone else has a stack of books that are so similar to mine.
That is the best! Hope we both enjoy reading them all.
Great haul! Used bookstores are my catnip! My favorite is in my hometown (about an hour away), so whether I see my family/go that shop depends on if I'm trying to curb my book buying/trying to avoid my family.
Book buying or avoid family. These are hard choices.

Ooh, the Dreiser sounds very interesting, for the reasons you mention--wonder if they had communes and Arts & Crafts schools here...
Exactly! I also love reading and learning about artist communities.

As far as I know it is and she did, but I don't want to say more until I've done a bit more research and confirmed.
Andersonville sounds interesting.
I hope it is!

If you want an interesting factoid, the Du Maurier family was somehow related to JM Barrie.
That is interesting! Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for the Book Haul. I loved Pachinko and now need to read Free Food for Millionaires. Best of luck with the move.

Kinda crazy to think such an English staple as capitalization had an introduction period 😅 all great things start somewhere
lol. So true. Spelling makes sense, but it's amazing how prolific people were despite there being little agreement on capitalization and comma usage.
Cholmondeley is pronounced 'chumly', believe it or not.
I believe it. It seemed suspicious to try and pronounce all those letters in an English name.
Have you got War and Peace by Tolstoy? It is full of the Napoleonic wars
I do! It's the only story that highly features the Napoleonic Wars that I like! I've read it twice now. Maybe my standards are too high and I'm secretly comparing all other accounts to Tolstoy's. 🫤
I would say, better lower your expectations about Trilby, this one can really be frustrating and really didn't age well.
