It started with Screaming Jay Hawkins in the 1950’s, and then Alice Cooper in the 60’s and beyond, and Kiss in the 70’s

Honestly if you really want a feel for why people love Marilyn Manson.. watch a live show. I suggest his 2001 concert in LA - lots of footage of it on youtube here - and then be sad you will probably never get to see a concert that bad ass.
