I'm still new with glazes, why do you want to increase or decrease the specific gravity of a glaze? What does it change?

Hey sharktoes. It basically changes the thickness or density of the glaze. It has a big impact on how your glazes turn out on the pots. Good question!

Public elementary school teacher here, just trying to figure out glaze to give students a fun experience. I was trained in illustration. I have a glaze obsidian celadon that doesn't want to stick to the pot, it runs off the rim. The gravity is 1.55 and the chart says 1.4 is good. I feel like it needs to be thicker, am I missing the mark here?

Hey Amy! If the recommended specific gravity is 1.4 and you're at 1.55 then you're probably too thick. Sounds like the glaze might have a lot of flux in it to make it run so I would defintely water it down to at least 1.4. You don't want to apply runny glazes too thick or they will do what you're describing - run right off the pot... then onto your kiln shelves and a big mess :) Please let me know how it goes in your next fire. Good luck! -mj

@@OutpostPottery I don't think I was clear on when the glaze runs off the pot. It is when I dip the bisque ware into the glaze, it is so thin it doesn't leave any glaze on the rims of the pots. I did have it at 1.47 and got it to 1.55. The glaze seems a better consistency at 1.55 and is sticking to the rims. I won't be able to fire for a few weeks, thank you covid, we went virtual again. When we get back I will hopefully be able to fire them. Thank you for your reply, your video helped me learn new things.

Amy you might try adjusting your bisque temperature as well. For instance if you bisque fire to cone 04 you might try cone 08 and see if that helps you as well. It sounds like your pots are having a hard time absorbing the glaze.
