Thank you for putting this up. I saw and photographed the pool when we visited the coast last weekend. Amazing to see it as it was. It sadly reminds me of the much larger Sea Bathing lake in Southport, which the council closed due to costs, allowed to decay and then bulldozed it to create... a car park. Criminal really. Such a beautiful and historic structure.
i remember doing canoeing lessons here in about 1987..come to think of it, i must've been one of the last people to swim in that pool. :).. brings back memories..was alot better then ,than the eyesore it has become.. :(
well done that was fabulous footage. We should petition north tyneside council to get it open again. I think perhaps people are too sissy these days to beace the cold though!
I belong to "the village" and spent many a happy hot summers day at the pool.I remember the hot bovirl/oxo drinks, and the gravy dips!I ve heard that there are plans to convert it back to a pool?
I remember this when it was open. Its sad but I think some are looking through rose tinted specs here, an outdoor pool in in the North East! It was freezing then and it would be freezing now, it wouldnt be cost effective for the four days you could actually swim in the thing without getting pneumonia.
wow thats amazing i live 5 mins away from it and its just a horrible looking rockpool now :( i heard it was gonna get turned into a wave center for surfer but that obviously hasnt happened ethier. We should start a fundraiser to get it back to its original order :)
i see this alot as im down at tynemouth beach a lot surfing think its a real shame it has ended up in such a mess closed in 96 ;( wud be good if the council werent so tight and had it opein in summer wud be real good fun
fantastic footage i think i still remember the fountain in the early eighties, now its just had rocks bunged in it , some sort of rather stupid idea, which ever person came up with that should have money deducted from there pay to restore it to some decency like some of the lidos down south ,
look at it now , what a mess, why don't councils do what they did 30 years ago instead of all the bullshit they do now. it was an icon, even though it was always bloody freezing and the Teddy Boys put razor blades in the water slide it was still great, i was going out with Alison Cooke atv the time.....
This is a wonderful piece of film and brings back happy memories of a simpler time.
It should definitely be restored, now the climate is warming up!
I remember this pool as a child, as I lived and still do, in Whitley Bay.
I loved swimming in this pool as a teenager in the 1950/60s. I last visited Tynemouth in 2001 and was sad to see it had been abandoned. :-(
This... my goodness. Wonderful. Thank you so much for uploading this footage.

Makes you wonder about the mental stability of the council - taking a great facility like this and filling it with rocks. Utter stupidity.
