One win from four games has slowed St Albans City’s march towards the National League South play-offs but there was certainly no lack of incident in last Saturday’s (24th February 2024) 1-1 home draw with Welling United and a 3-3 draw with Weymouth at Radipole Lane the following Tuesday.
City conceded first in both games and bounced back swiftly only to, ultimately, fall short of victory. Shaun Jeffers was again n the scoresheet but his strike against Welling had added significance as he became the seventh player to score 100 goals for the Saints.
His 101st goal was not far away either as he put City into a 2-1 lead at Weymouth. A flurry of late goals saw Weymouth bounce back to lead 3-2 with goals on 85 and 90 minutes. But, to their credit, back came City again with Zane Banton firing home five minutes into added time. A minute later and Jake Burger looked to have scored the winner only for a, probably incorrect, offside flag to spoil the party.
City’s play off aspirations face another testing 90 minutes on Saturday (2nd March) when Hampton & Richmond Borough are the visitors to Clarence Park.
