    I like that the Watt system has the potential to get rid of solar panels. Roadtrek vans already have essentially no clutter on the exterior side panels. If one removes the awning, orders the under mount ProAir system that eliminates the roof top air conditioner, and uses the Watt system to replace solar panels, the result is an RV that is completely stealth. An absolutely quiet camper van masquerading as a passenger van.

    • @Ultramobility

      yep though I think the watt would work in conjunction with solar best. that way you're not eating through propane if the sun can provide free recharging of your batteries.

    I will trade my Onan propane generator in a heart beat but the under the hood generator sounds like a better option.

    • @Ultramobility
      @Ultramobility  6 років тому

      problem with the underhood is that we can't really have it on a sprinter chassis. well we can but we can't get the remote start option without the manufacturer likely voiding their MasterUpfitters status. this eliminates that problem on the sprinter chassis. not a problem as far as i'm aware on the promaster chassis.

    If you look closely at the photos online of the Fortino, in the rear it looks like it has an outdoor shower connector, however I don’t see anything on the specs sheet about it. If it does AND it has hot water that could sway some people that are going to use this in the outdoors. You could easily rig up a shower curtain around the back of the van. Most of these Westfalia style vans have outdoor showers I’d be surprised if PW overlooked this.

    • @Ultramobility
      @Ultramobility  6 років тому +1

      yes looks like an outside shower. I don't think there is a hot water heater. I don't see any access panel and it's not using the truma combi. it is using a compressor refrigerator tho! and induction cooktop and they're saying it is 4 season.

    I think the RAM is a GREAT chassis. It has large front windows....and a front wheel drive. I feel it drives more smoothly than the Mercedes chassis or Ford's. Unfortunately it appears the Class B manufacturers are going away from the RAM Promaster to these other chassis. And the UA-cam presentation I've seen makes the WATT very interesting. I currently have a 2017 Roadtrek ZION. It will be interesting to hear what Roadtrek's plans are for the introduction of the WATT into their production schedule.

    Lower cost vans will be great, for sure. Neat to see the Watt system, but it's pretty limited in its power output. 500W constant... so yeah, basically like a solar panel setup. About 1/3lb of LP per hour running at that. Not running your microwave or AC off of that system... plus having to get LP.
    I'd really rather see some good, quiet inverter generators used in entry/lower cost vans. I'm hoping to get into a Travato 59G in a few years... I'd go for the base model, but would then need to run the generator. I'm in the south, and I do not want to cook while I sleep.... but that Onan generator is crazy loud! Why hasn't the RV industry come up with something better? The Honda 3000i generator is stupid quiet at idle and not much louder under load. Convert that thing to an underslung generator unit on a van and have a much quieter and more efficient unit.

    Hi Neil! When you say, _we're finally have an alternative to noisy generators,_ am I correct in assuming you're excluding aftermarket options in that statement? I'm still relatively new to the RV World and have been concerned about exactly this issue. Generators are terribly loud and obnoxious not just to the users but to the neighbors and fellow campers. And I've been hoping that I might be able to swap out a standard battery bank with a _lithium ion_ battery bank. And I had been reading about some companies that currently provide this as a viable option.

    • @Ultramobility
      @Ultramobility  6 років тому

      hi thomas yes you can go aftermarket to upgrade to lithium. the fuel cell is silent and can replace a generator for many use cases. not sure what other after market options are available for a normal generator replace unless you're talking about second alternators?

    The pricing would be very interesting. I wonder when they will introduce this new technology in Europe. There was no news about it, AFAIK, at the big Caravan & RV salon in Düsseldorf recently.

    • @Ultramobility
      @Ultramobility  6 років тому +1

      I don't think so. it's americans who want to run their rooftop a/c for long periods of time. my feeling is that this isn't so much of an issue in Europe.

    • @NicoVeenkamp
      @NicoVeenkamp 6 років тому

      Neil, I agree on the A/C, but I believe that running other electric gadgets such as a water cooker, electric heating and cooking systems will make more power in the van necessary. Also note that the restrictions on using diesel to drive your mean is putting on more and more restrictions in Europe and the first electric vans and RV's have already been introduced. So it may not be the A/C but a lot of other resources that will need more electricity in the RV or van.
      I would like to add that a current trend in Europe, and cofinanced by the EU, is to expand the Hydrogen Fuel Cell technology. Part of it is to expand the places where you can hook up your car, van or RV to take in hydrogen to fuel your system. So we are already investing in fuel cell technology, but not based on propane but on hydrogen. We'll see what the future brings.

    • @Ultramobility
      @Ultramobility  6 років тому

      hydrogen would be a great way to go with a fuel cell as you don't have to worry about propane contamination as I understand it. but as you say you need to infrastructure in place which is why here in the states propane is better as we don't have really any hydrogen infrastructure to speak of unfortunately.

    The fuel cell is very interesting. Would it mean small batteries, and perhaps less solar? I hope PW is looking into it.

    • @Ultramobility
      @Ultramobility  6 років тому +1

      I think you think of it as a generator replacement so battery capacity would be determined more by what you think you need and the fuel cell like how much solar you need to keep the batteries topped up. it could replace solar for sure but I think the intent is to augment it especially on cloudy days and at night. I made a mistake in the video and said it consumed .5lbs of propane an hour and I believe it's .5 gallons an hour.

  • @jerrygundrum1
    @jerrygundrum1 6 років тому

    Ya, the Watt is 500 watts when brand new. There is no performance data over time and the fuel cell needs to be replaced. I read that at 4000 hours your performance can drop as low as 70 percent. So how does 300 wats sound.
    Then there are the other fuel cell querks like long start up times and shutdown times. And turning them on and off frequently shortens the life

    If WATT won't run A/C, and it replaces voltstart and underhood gen, does that mean it is not suitable to keep pets in the RV while dining, running into the store, etc. No automatic climate control?

    • @Ultramobility
      @Ultramobility  6 років тому +1

      It’s suitable. you need a large enough battery bank then you would use the watt to top off your battery bank before you start your air-conditioner and then possibly keep the watt running supplying 500 W of power to help supplement and refill your battery bank as the air-conditioners drawing power from it. That would help you extend out the amount of time that the air-conditioner can run off battery power.

    If you can't run the AC off the fuel cell, and you don't have a generator on board, does that mean you can only run the AC when plugged into shore power?

    • @Ultramobility
      @Ultramobility  6 років тому

      nope. with a large enough battery bank you would simply swtich on the fuel cell before you need to run the AC to top it off and then use your ac off batteries. if the charge state falls below a certain level the fuel cell will switch on and contribute up to 500w back into your batteries. not enough to power the ac completely on its own but enough to greatly extend your battery usage to run the ac.

      @@Ultramobility
      45 amps at 12 volts is 540 watts
      That would be a reasonable number
      How they integrate the fuel cell is going to be interesting
      there has to be an on/off switch
      and I don't know what the 50 state rules are with open propane lines
      while cruising at 75 MPH
      going through tunnels
      over barges
      and will they want the owner to think of it as a battery

      and gobbling up propane to the point folks can't be sure
      if they will make it through the night when it gets cold
      That's why a separate propane source that only feeds the fuel cell seems to make sense

      no need to burn 1/2 pound of propane on a sunny day with solar delivering 200 watts

      yep good points. I think I recall them saying that in the roadtrek integration WATT is controlling everything including Solar. It will monitor all energy sources and intelligently determine when to turn on. one open question is can their fuel cell be throttled or is it all or nothing? so for instance is the solar cells are bringing in 90ah for the day can WATT throttle down so as to not have to be running at full?

    Two comments:
    First I’d really like to see Pleasureway meld the Sprinters FL and TS into one model that has a front lounge like the current Fl and a bathroom and fridge like the new Lexor
    Second Comment- You said the new “Watt System “ can not be used for AC but merely acts like a large solar array. If that’s the case then how is that a step toward getting rid of the generators or additional alternators?
    Thanks Neil and keep us posted

    • @Ultramobility
      @Ultramobility  6 років тому +2

      hey tom - well the fuel cell can contribute up to 500w of power into the batteries. that's quite a bit. if you have large enough battery capacity you could run off batteries and as they drain down the fuel cell will contribute up to 500w of power into the packs. that's not enough to run the AC directly but it covers a lot of the power requirements and greatly extends the length of time you can continue to run the AC off batteries. make sense? it would be like having a huge solar array grabbing 500w of power and pouring it into your batteries but doing it at night or any time it's needed.
