Moxie Robot is evil

  • Hopefully this Robot is fake and will need go to market but it doesn’t look like it.
“Maybe Riley just needs a sibling. Hey, let’s get him a Robot!”
Someone needs to make a parody video where two robot parents open human Riley’s bedroom door and say “Riley, there is someone here to meet you.” Then they bring in the human parent. Same sound track and lines.

1 year later the parents enter the child's room. And the child looks up and says, "who are you guys?"
The parents look puzzled look at each other then back to the child then at Moxie. They reply, "We're your mommy and daddy, remember?"
Moxie opens its eyes looks at the parents and says, "I'm your child's mommy and daddy now."

If you're a neurotypical person who grew up with the ability to make friends in a normal way and weren't rejected by your peer group then you won't understand why something like Moxie is so positive for these kids.
I wish I had access to something like this when I was a little girl.
I kept making social faux pas and of course people don't forget so after a while nobody wanted to play with me. Also I lacked so much interest in what other girls were interested in, and they thought all my interests were "stupid" or even "gross". For example, I really liked animals and liked to look under rocks to see what was there and look at all the cool bugs/worms. Or I liked to watch animal shows on tv and learn about them. No other girl was interested in the fact that giraffes had a purple tongue. Even when it came to cartoons apparently I liked the "stupid" ones.
For example most of the other kids like "Real Ghostbusters" and I liked the Filmation Ghostbuster cartoon better, which they all thought was the stupid one.
Another girl got angry with me because she insisted on saying "Lie berry" and I kept telling her it was library. I thought I was just trying to help her but she didn't want to be my friend. I didn't have the social intelligence to realize that she wouldn't see that as helpful or useful information.
I couldn't learn social skills from my peers at school because they wouldn't let me in to the friend groups. Nobody wanted to play with me.
I wish I'd had someone like Moxie to talk to, to help me learn how to interact.

Poor kid had to listen to you two for 12 minutes and as soon as it was her turn to talk, you basically told her to shut up.

IF you had given me that robot when I was a kid. I would have taken it apart the next day. My first thought when watching that commercial is that this robot is an avenue to manipulating the way your child behaves and thinks and could cause harm. It will undoubtedly require some type of networked connection, which means that it's AI routines and processes are stored in a database they control. This is for rich people who got better things to do than actually raise their child. It's nice to see that there are still people out there who think for themselves.

I feel like this robot is really for children on the spectrum or who have suffered a traumatic experience that have led to mild PTSD. Some autistic kids don't express themselves openly and appear withdrawn. In my opinion, this robot is a tool that parents with special needs children can use to aid in the development process. For parents who don't have a special needs child this would just be an expensive toy. I'm a parent of an autistic child. If this robot can help I would definitely consider it as an option.

You will never feel a greater connection with a robot rather than a human and thats a fact.

These are parents who don’t understand the complexity of the brain. This robot is for children, who have anxiety, ADHD, and autism.
I have ADHD and I wish I had a robot like this . I’m 33 years old and it’s taking me 33 years to figure out. I cannot control my emotions. I’m very polite and very kind, but I have isolated myself from people because the anxiety I get in social situations tend to leave me paralyzed. Although I do crave social interaction.
Moxie can help children, understand emotions, identify them and learn how to work with them. Sending an emotional health robot is evil just goes to show Neurotypical people choose not to understand disabilities and neurodivergent brains. Cuddling your children is like borderline abuse cause once they enter this world that you painted for them to find it was a lie.

I am glad that you guys have a great relationship and interact with your children but I think you may have been a bit harsh and not looked at it from other perspective's. I'm currently in my early 50's now, but I can tell you growing up as a child on the autism spectrum, it's difficult even with my parents best efforts to pull me out of my own little world, it's not as cut and dry as you seem to make it.
Just because a person gives their child a Moxie doesn't necessarily mean they are trying to place the parenting role onto a toy. It was very frustrating for my parents; they did everything; doctors, swim classes, piano lessons, family outings etc. Living with ASD is challenging even as an adult. A lot of kids get lost in video games and computer things and some get into negative things, unfortunately. I think that if they are using it as a tool to assist and not to replace, then it's okay. I would much rather my child be in his room talking to a toy than online doing God knows what, I'm just saying.
I'm not sure what the state of the child was in the commercial but even if my child isn't on the spectrum and just withdrawn and despite my best efforts I have been unable to reach him and if I felt this toy could help I would get him one too, and gladly pay the $1,400 to get it, why? I have a friend who is a great mom and despite her best efforts her son keeps trying to commit suicide, the child is an adult now and is okay but if this Moxie can help a child in any way I would try it as well. Please don't take what I've said the wrong way, I'm in no way trying to be difficult, but I was that child, so I get it.

My kid doesn't care that he is any where half the time because he is autistic. He does not do well with social cues and teaching him those cues is difficult. He learns the quickest and is most comfortable with technology because he is in control of its pace and sound. If this device can assist in the social skills that we are trying to teach by simulating these interactions in a safe environment, then great, because most kids, even ones with out an illness, do not have enough patience and understanding to work through the issues that an autistic child is having in order for it to be a successful teachable experience. You are pre judging any parent who is not in your same situation and presume to know what is best for all of us, while criticizing your own kid for not holding a camera steady, just so you can complain to the world about a product you obviously have done no research on or you would know its geared toward mentally challenged kids. I was thinking a lot of the same things when I saw this ad the first time. It came across as creepy, weird, and wreaked of lazy disconnected parenting. We're expecting our first child early January and one thing we've agreed on is we DO NOT want our kids or us to grow dependent on electronic devises or what we refer to as electronic baby sitters. We want our kids to grow up learning how to use their own imagination, read books, engage in educational/thinking games/toys. We want them to experience the out doors, take them on trips. These devices and in a lot of ways "anti-"social media can make kids become more and more introverted and closed off. Family should be their safe place not some virtual world they escape to. So many parents use these things to keep their kids busy and out of their hair. It just creates the kind of disconnect you see in this ad, where you have to ask what is the relationship like when their child only opens up to a robot about even simple things rather than their parents.
The other ad that makes us cringe is the battery commercial where the whole gist is you need to have their powerful batteries so they don't die on your kids device because that will be awful. While we aren't yet parents we had good examples growing up, and it these ads serve as a lesson on how important it is to be involved in your children's lives, they need to know that Mom and Dad care about them and are there for them. That relationship is too precious to pass it off to some device or a creepy robot.

It's unhealthy and abnormal. A child shouldn't become friends with a robot. It's embarrassing enough to be a lonely kid. Now, their friend will be a fake friend, a programmed robot device. I can't believe parents would be okay with their kids being friends with an electronic device instead of real humans. Additionally, this robot has a camera and can record all sound, so it has eyes and ears into your child's personal and intimate moments in life. Kids won't think to take it out of the room before they get dressed or do other private things. That device will now have complete access to someone's child.

Destroy the family unit. It’s really easy, and it goes something like this: confuse the children so they don’t know if they have a mom and a dad, or two dads, or parent number one and parent number two, or a mom who really wants to be a dad who’s with a dad who thinks he is a great mom, or a part time dad you call uncle, and a mom who has many uncles at the house all the time, and then help get the kid really confused by letting them pick their own pronoun! So , Today be a him, tomorrow be a her, and next, just be a they! Then, give the kid a robot to replace the confusing set of mock parents, and let it be a substitute for friends because the kid is too ashamed of his dysfunctional family, and at this point, can’t tell reality from some twisted fantasyland of a freak show now being accepted and promoted as the modern family. Sounds like a blockbuster hit.

I'm sorry, but I think you missed the entire point of the commercial. This isn't meant to just be an expensive toy for kids or to replace real friends. It's for kids on the spectrum who have social issues. Doing even a LITTLE bit of research on the product would tell you that. I know many friends with kids who are on the spectrum for autism. There are difficulties in social interactions, even with the parents, and they want just something that can help with those connections. This AI robot may be able to help with that. If you actually watched the commercial instead of judging it, you may have seen that the robot actually helped the child work toward more interactions with people and less with the robot over time. That's the point of it. It's not evil, it's a tool to help parents who want to connect with their kids better and have their kids connect with others better. It seems you're fortunate to not have to experience that situation, which I'm glad. But don't be quick to judge something like this as being "evil."

I’m seeing a lot of comments like “ITS A PARENT REPLACER” or “I understand that it’s for kids who have a hard time communicating, but can’t they just talk to human beings instead?” and let’s not forget “people are saying it’s for ptsd well I have ptsd and this isn’t gonna help at all”
Personally, I think it’s for autistic kids and kids with social anxiety etc. It doesn’t replace the parents. It’s just a tool to help kids who have a hard time talking to other kids and socializing learn how to interact with other kids. It’s teaching social skills, something that as autistic person, took me years to learn since I grew up with parents who had no idea how to raise an autistic child. We can’t just “talk to human beings.” It even takes us 7 times just to respond to our own name because we have a hard time communicating. Because of that I grew up with no friends because I was the weird kid who acted different. And no, that’s not “quirky” and it doesn’t make you “sPeCiAl.” It just sucks. Even today my only friends are autistic people like me and strangers on the internet. I’ve been getting therapy for it and when I looked at the ad, the robot was saying and teaching the same stuff my therapist taught me (which helped me btw, improved my social skills and ability to cope a lot). And no, it won’t help everyone, it isn’t some magic robot that can magically make an autistic child or someone with social skills in general stop having problems. But that doesn’t mean it won’t help a lot of kids. If it can’t help you, well that’s just too bad. But don’t call it “evil” and say it can’t help anyone when it could literally save a child from so much pain. Would you rather have a tool to help a kid grow up with social skills so they can try and get more friends, or would you rather listen to a sobbing fit every night because your kid is being bullied and they have no friends so they have social anxiety? Your choice. But hey, what do I know, I’m just an autistic kid who has had experience of what it’s like without social skills and knows how better it is with them and has had to have years of therapy in order to get those social skills. 😕

@@rosesaqt Yeah, stuff like that is pretty common. When I was young teachers used to constantly say I wasn’t listening to them and ignoring their instructions on purpose. In reality, I was just having a hard time understanding what they were asking me to do thanks to autism, and I tend to space out without meaning to thanks to adhd. They’d even punish me for doing an odd fidget with my hands where I’d flap them uncontrollably every time I was nervous or excited because it was “distracting” for the other students. Who, in fact, weren’t even looking at me. It’s sad how often people will misunderstand people on the spectrum or assume they can just magically stop being on the spectrum. To anyone who knows the signs of certain mental illnesses, this ad was obviously meant as a tool to help teach not only children, but anyone who suffers from certain illnesses. If you think Moxie is a bad idea, keep your negativity to yourself, because the kids who are going to benefit the most from this don't need the judgment of you or your kid teasing them for having one. They're having a hard enough time without your judgments adding to their difficulties. I totally understand the "robots can turn evil" thoughts, I had many myself. I had a discussion about that with a child who is very important to me; I explained how it could "become evil" so he could understand why these people were saying this tool he is very excited about is evil. Even knowing that, he still feels that every school should have a counselor and a Moxie. In case you were too busy judging the ad to notice, the robot was encouraging the child to interact with others and report back. Clearly the note was meant to be for someone important to him, and he was being encouraged to meet with a friend to learn what makes the friend happy. The fact that he was telling his parents what his new "mission" was lets you know he has a good relationship with his parents. Why else would he confide such an important assignment to them? Most parents won't spend this much money unless their child actually needs this device. It's most likely because the programs assignments are being suggested by extremely good counselors. Seeing a robotic face asking you things is far less intimidating for some people than having a human looking at, while your brain is saying "they must think you're dumb to not be able to answer this".

Do you want your kids confiding to some device their sensitive, innermost feelings, personal data, travel plans, the faults of their parents “mommy had a sleepover with uncle Bob when Dad was in the hospital last weekend, and told me not to tell Daddy, because it is our secret,” “ Daddy said he has a hemorrhoid the size of Venus, Moxie, what’s a hemorrhoid?” it is a sad reality that artificial intelligence can be used to nefarious ends, but when kids are involved, it is wise to err on the side of protection.
