How about a video of you ordering from a 1 star place, and then you recreate their vision doing improvements you think should be done to make it better. Instead of rating them for trying, show us your best version of it. I feel like it gas been a while since we have seen a real baking video from you. Now you have your "dream kitchen", it would be nice to see some real baking videos from you again. 🎂

Loved the video, this series is really my favourite! The only thing that weirded me out are the "stock video images", they werent really fitting from the theme and distracted a lot from the mood and context. I know you're trying something new and wanted to put in my perspective

Yes i thought this. It makes sense for traditional video format where the person is speaking to the camera. But for Laurie reading out reviews, it was disjointed?
it's kinda wierd when you realize how people see things differently. The picture looks very pink to me but when put side by side w/ the actual cake they colors do seem mostly similar. Good reminder that reality is relative.
Way generous on cake #1. I would be PISSED if I get this for 675. Looks like a toddler made it. Cake #2 looked so much better. At least they did the flowers by hands and it looked professional.
I think saying it looks like a toddler made it is a bit of a stretch 😭 it did look similar to the design on the outside. Aside from the weird bulge in the back (which no one really looks at anyway) and it being over streamed, it didn’t look that bad. The bottom tier of cake 2 looked kind of gross, but their flowers were great and the top tier looked amazing, but honestly both cakes were nearly on the same level on the other level, that one just happened to pay more attention to smaller details.
I would be mad too. The first cake did NOT look high enough quality to be a wedding cake. It was hideous. Just because the cake is still standing, doesn't make it worth $635. It doesn't look like a toddler made it, but it does look like someone who has no experience making wedding cakes made it. And not only that, but the little details like the stems not having flowers to me shows that the person who made it didn't care if it even looked finished.
I have to jump in at three minutes and give my opinion 😂 I'm loving the videos, but hating the inserted clips between the takes, from some videofiles anybody can access and use. Changes the vibe to not better and ruins the authentic Icing Artist style, that I've followed for years and love. Not hating, just giving my opinion 😊 And will always watch anyways, because you guys are truly amazing 🥰💜

Also I have a video idea: order a cake from a bakery and say that it’s for a UA-cam video and get someone else to order the same exact cake from the same bakery but don’t say that it’s for a UA-cam video and compare to see if they are different or anything like that. I got this idea from another comment from another video so if u know the person, pls tell me! ❤❤❤

Even if you have your order them a few months apart it’s great, you just film the first one when you get it, save the video then again with the second one and make it into one video.
If I paid $635 for that id be PISSED. The second cake turned out close enough I wouldn’t be mad although id be upset that they didn’t use fresh strawberries AND didn’t do the height requested in the photo especially considering that. The new background!

Yes exactly! I feel bad when I watch these types of videos and it's almost like they're calling the reviewers liars 😂 I would be so offended. Imagine having to leave someone a bad review in the first place which is rubbish enough but then someone makes a video to say your review is "busted" 😅😅
1st bakery: Didn't learn, or isn't learning from reviews. Probably not even reading the reviews. At all. 2nd bakery: You can see where improvements were made. It seem like they read the reviews. So, I would say they are learning from what they read, but they have not yet fully learned.
14:11 why doesn’t anyone pay attention to the dimensions of the example cake? The top tier is meant to give a feeling of height, and a sense of uplifting. The flowers are way, way better, and the foliage isn’t crazy. I am not in love with their airbrushing, withering, but overall, they did better, IMHO.
Love watching all your videos. And decided to start my on journey. Have been baking for at least 30 years but decided to go to pastry school. Thank you for helping me make my decision. Such a cute couple to watch and learn from.
Honestly I think it's partly because they are wedding cakes, I'd be disappointed in either for a wedding cake. You want that photo moment of you cutting into the cake and both just didn't look right. They weren't awful but for a wedding day you want more than "not awful".
I couldn’t get over the fact that the reviews were from years ago, one being 6 years ago. I think if you were to redo a video like this, you should find more recent reviews. So much can change in 6 years. Other than that, it was an enjoyable video to watch 😊❤
13:40 ooh it's possible the person's screen had a different color balance than yours did, so when you sent the picture it came across more purple (I definitely see purple on my screen).
About the cheesecake: I ordered Kaesekuchen in Germany. The word literally translates to cheesecake. I received a slice of yellow cake, split, and filled with a cheese filling -- sort of like sweetened cottage cheese. It was cheesecake. Still that wasn't as bad as when I thought I was ordering baked plums in red wine with vanilla ice cream: Eingelegte Backpflaumen im rot Wein mit vanillin Eis. That time, I made two errors: Backpflaumen translates to baked plums, but they are prunes. Eingelegte means something like preserved. I ordered stewed prunes in red wine with vanilla ice cream.
A fun video idea is if Kevin picks out the one-star bakeries and Lori tries to guess why it's a one-star bakery from the cake. Then she could guess the price based on the facts before her and the quality of the cake. That way her views/opinions are uninfluenced as well.

I got purple too. I think the purple was more blue toned than it should have been as the purple in the picture leans more pink but these this were pretty close.
I was so shocked because I for sure only saw pink! But when I looked again, I really get why they thought purple. I think a combination between the pink color on the first cake and the purple color on the second cake would have been perfect!

You should do a show called cake doctor where you go to these crappy one-star bakeries and help them elevate themselves to at least a 3 or 4 star bakery.
that purple color is practically identical to from the reference photo they did an awesome job like the cake style isn't for me with the two squares basically but they did an AMAZING job with emulating the reference photo. That seems like maybe a bakery that is maybe seeing some comments and doing better based on those reviews.

Love that you did this, and of course you are looking at reviews for those who bought for a huge event and even if something goes wrong, everything goes wrong in their heads. Especially when they are looking for cheap/low cost options. That last chocolate/chocolate cake looked delicious, not going to lie! I need to get back into making cakes again, just not great on the decorating part, but with practice I think I can do it, plus watching you has helped put things into perspective too. Have a fudge filling that's not too sweet and adds just that little oomph you need with a light chocolate cake, and it works great with adding strawberries or any other live fruit jam/what have you. Thank you for making this video, I just hope you could show their response to you rating their cakes and perhaps giving them advice on what they could do to make them better. ❤🧡💛💚💙💜🖤

I would give both of them 1 star because neither seemed worth the price. Prices for cakes are out of control and I can't remember how long it has been since I had a specialized cake for my birthday.
Feel like the use of the word “Busted”, invalidates the experience of the people who left reviews. As you guys now having a better experience in some aspects doesn’t mean those people were wrong.
You’re brave ordering from a 1 star bakery. Cake #2 certainly meets the requirements as far as looks and wins there. You’re right, the roses were gorgeous. Too bad about the lack of strawberry taste in the vanilla cake. But the chocolate sounded delicious. Cake #1 was weird looking with the wet goopy finish. Didn’t like the fake flowers. And big zero for the grocery store taste and flavour. Definitely has to be cake #2 as the clear winner. Unfortunately many, many bakeries don’t bake “technically” from scratch anymore. They buy big bags of commercial cake mixes. From Costco or some other supplier. It turns out basically a grocery store cake. Absolutely not what you want for a wedding cake. I’ve been baking from scratch for 40 + years , so I’m biased. But you can doctor a box cake successfully if you know what you’re doing.
YES!!! The bakery I used to work at didn't make anything from scratch, all boxed cake mix. Which then all of them just have that same basic artificial cake flavor. Betty Crocker at home is so easy, so why spend money ordering from bakery to get the same flavor?

I am so glad my culture has 3 wedding ceremonies before your big day and 2 have western wedding cakes (2 of the pre wedding ones). Gives a lot of time to test a baker before your actual big day

But I have one suggestion…when you put subtitles on screen about the comments u guys are saying during the videos they just go by so fast and so many times I don’t have the time to read them because they just zoom by and disappear 😩. ok, video idea... what can you do to fix a toppled cake in an emergency? maybe try a version with some decorations, one with re-icing it and one where you take smashed bits of cake and remould it like a giant cake-pop maybe?

I cannot believe these prices for this quality. It is unfathomable to me. In Wales, UK I paid 200 pounds for a four tier cake which was so incredible and looked way above par compared to this. Are these prices normal for the US?

Please try Marshmallow fondant! It’s so good, I add a few drops of cheesecake flavor in mine and it’s delicious, I get so many compliments from people who HATE fondant
That first cake reminded me of the walls in my first (dive) apartment that was painted with a burgundy gloss paint over layers and layers of paint and multiple cracks. It was the bulge that clinched it.
Cake 2: this is why details, when ordering, are SO important. Bakers: clairfy what colors you're gonna make. Customers: Clarify what colors you want. I also see purple on that top tier.
It's a hard one to judge on this occasion as I dislike the design of the original. I think you are being to kind Laurie. They are 1 stars. I could do better than that and I am just a hobby baker.

I honestly think the 2nd cake was spot on with the purple color, the picture definitely looked more purple to me too!

EXACTLY! The proportion of #1 was off (the top tier should have been taller, and the missing ombre was a bigger hit for me)

The edit with the stock videos cheapens the overall look of the video. I'd prefer when you just read the reviews.

Love that you did this, and of course you are looking at reviews for those who bought for a huge event and even if something goes wrong, everything goes wrong in their heads. Especially when they are looking for cheap/low cost options. That last chocolate/chocolate cake looked delicious, not going to lie! I need to get back into making cakes again, just not great on the decorating part, but with practice I think I can do it, plus watching you has helped put things into perspective too. Have a fudge filling that's not too sweet and adds just that little oomph you need with a light chocolate cake, and it works great with adding strawberries or any other live fruit jam/what have you. Thank you for making this video, I just hope you could show their response to you rating their cakes and perhaps giving them advice on what they could do to make them better. ❤🧡💛💚💙💜🖤

I would give both of them 1 star because neither seemed worth the price. Prices for cakes are out of control and I can't remember how long it has been since I had a specialized cake for my birthday.

Feel like the use of the word “Busted”, invalidates the experience of the people who left reviews. As you guys now having a better experience in some aspects doesn’t mean those people were wrong.
You’re brave ordering from a 1 star bakery. Cake #2 certainly meets the requirements as far as looks and wins there. You’re right, the roses were gorgeous. Too bad about the lack of strawberry taste in the vanilla cake. But the chocolate sounded delicious. Cake #1 was weird looking with the wet goopy finish. Didn’t like the fake flowers. And big zero for the grocery store taste and flavour. Definitely has to be cake #2 as the clear winner. Unfortunately many, many bakeries don’t bake “technically” from scratch anymore. They buy big bags of commercial cake mixes. From Costco or some other supplier. It turns out basically a grocery store cake. Absolutely not what you want for a wedding cake. I’ve been baking from scratch for 40 + years , so I’m biased. But you can doctor a box cake successfully if you know what you’re doing.
YES!!! The bakery I used to work at didn't make anything from scratch, all boxed cake mix. Which then all of them just have that same basic artificial cake flavor. Betty Crocker at home is so easy, so why spend money ordering from bakery to get the same flavor?

It sounds like they need to revamp their strawbery cake recipe. I do 3 tier strawberry cakes all the time with no structure issues.
Just because it wasn't your experience doesn't mean it's busted or that they lied about their experience
I am a newbie to your channel, but I love it so far. So intresting to see so many cakes using fondant since we usualy use marsipan for alot of the cakes where I am from.
I would be very annoyed if I paid 600$ - 700$ for either of those cakes. 😂

I'm so with you on fondant, for looks when decorating its wonderful, but I also just hate eating the stuff, I peel it off any cake I'm handed with it on.
I am so glad my culture has 3 wedding ceremonies before your big day and 2 have western wedding cakes (2 of the pre wedding ones). Gives a lot of time to test a baker before your actual big day

I have watched every single video u have made..I CANT GET ENOUGH!!! But I have one suggestion…when you put subtitles on screen about the comments u guys are saying during the videos they just go by so fast and so many times I don’t have the time to read them because they just zoom by and disappear 😩. And it’s always something funny but could u maybe slow those parts down a tad so we can read what u are putting..?? Hope that makes sense.

ok, video idea... what can you do to fix a toppled cake in an emergency? maybe try a version with some decorations, one with re-icing it and one where you take smashed bits of cake and remould it like a giant cake-pop maybe?

I cannot believe these prices for this quality. It is unfathomable to me. In Wales, UK I paid 200 pounds for a four tier cake which was so incredible and looked way above par compared to this. Are these prices normal for the US?

Please try Marshmallow fondant! It’s so good, I add a few drops of cheesecake flavor in mine and it’s delicious, I get so many compliments from people who HATE fondant

That first cake reminded me of the walls in my first (dive) apartment that was painted with a burgundy gloss paint over layers and layers of paint and multiple cracks. It was the bulge that clinched it.

The first cake anyone could make in their kitchen for $30. The flowers looked like they came from Dollar Tree! #2 at least looked good!
Cake 2: this is why details, when ordering, are SO important. Bakers: clairfy what colors you're gonna make. Customers: Clarify what colors you want.
