Both great bikes, and on public roads, they both deliver what is needed for a fun, reliable ride. I used to ride on a Ninja 250R, and that could handle public freeways too believe it or not, with a top speed of 100 mph+ downhill.

The info on these 2 machines is off a bit. The base 500 non ABS is $5299 not $5699 & the R3 comes with ABS standard & 3 color options not 2 there’s also a Lunar White model. The Ninja has more power but IMO the R3 is a better looking machine!
As a ninja 500 advocate and small youtube reviewer on this bike... it's hard to compare it to the R3. Yamaha has the best looking bikes in my opinion, but dam that r3 needs a new motor... it doesnt even need to be as fast.. just closer to a 400cc

If your really new to riding, don't waste your money on one of these. Learn on a cheap ass air cooled dual sport. Once you learn the basics on shifting and if riding is gonna be a passion of yours, your gonna want a bigger more faster more thrilling experience in less than a year. Maybe a month or 2. Idk, the market wasn't full of so many beginners options when I was coming up. They had the Ninja 250 and Ninja 500 and the next best thing that wasn't a race rep and affordable as hell was a SV650. If we did it then why do people need so many more options now and they're are more fatalities. I don't get it.
Does the segment always need to be getting faster? As an R3 owner, the power is perfectly adequate for all on road usage and I remember when I first got on it, it was plenty scary enough 😅 Too many people focus on MORE POWER MORE SPEED as if a usable, approachable bike doesn't have an upper limit on those metrics. Reliability, safety, handling, affordability are all vastly more important in my opinion- at least when it comes to this segment. I've taken my R3 on track and that was the only time I wished I had more power.
I think it's more of what you get for the money you pay. Then again, if the R3 became the R4 or R5 it would probably be the best of the lot but would also cost the most.

@@torque110 depends on your style of riding- the r3 is perfectly capable of 160kmh+, and that's not even sitting on redline. if you're larger and spend multiple hours on freeways a week, perhaps something with a larger engine that'd be less stressed would be good- like a Cbr500r. The r3 definitely doesn't accelerate madly past about 90kmh, but it's still very much able to cruise and overtake at freeway speeds!

Yamaha is really shooting itself in the foot with the R3, R7, and R9 lineup. Why not make the R3 a proper A2-compliant bike, like the Aprilia RS457 or Ninja 500? And the R7 could have been a middleweight that’s also A2-compliant, similar to the Aprilia RS660. The R3/R7/R9 lineup is turning into a complete joke.

Yamaha can simply make an R4 to max out the A2 license. The R3 in Sweden is also more expensive than the fully loaded Ninja 500 😅
