I mudlarked a secret beach and it was a dream come true for me! (Only some of you will know why!)

  • I recently visited a secret location abroad and what I found there was really a dream come true for me. I could hardly believe it actually. Those of you that know me and my videos well may know why! These pieces are very hard to come by! April 2023 my mud buddy ‪@Sifinds‬ went to visit mudlark Aad from the channel ‪@MudBagger406406406‬ . Aad took us to a wonderful place absolutely chock full of history. We spent several happy hours there searching the shoreline and it was a particularly low tide. I found some wonderful fragments of history and left feeling very inspired!
Thank you very much to Aad for sharing this special place with us. I can't wait to go back.
Do check out Aad's channel. You will love it!
Thank you for watching. And, do comment below to let me know what you think!
    See you soon
    Nicola

My first thought about your ash tray was that it was a small drawer pull off of a desk. So instead of the hole facing up like a cup it would be facing down.

Having done some time as a production engineer, it does my heart good to see "Thames" fish going back into production!
The amber glass insulator may have a radio application: not just from the material but also because the diameter of the rings changes. I won't comment on the precise location where this might have been made, but there is a story involving secrets and a factory where it might or might not have come from:
Ashe Lincoln, a barrister and also a commander in the RNVR, spent most of WWII variously defusing German and Japanese secret weapons in order to study them and devise counter-measures, or picking up enough widely-scattered bits of secret weapons for the same purpose. He got through the whole war without being widely-scattered himself.
His memoir "Secret Naval Investigator" describes his efforts to reverse engineer what turned out to be an acoustic homing torpedo. This had electronic rather than electro-mechancial parts including amplifiers and filters made using "valves" (Vacuum-tubes if you are American.) He eventually collected enough bits to make a whole one, but he needed the right make and model of (intact and working!) valves to make his replica guidance system work well enough to know how to jam it. Obviously, they weren't British or American valves -and they weren't German, either! They were made by a factory in the Low Countries, forced to produce high-tech parts for the occupiers. Commander Lincoln sent MI6 a messages saying that he'd done all he could, without the specific valves. A few nights later, two RAF officers knocked on his door, put him in their car and drove him to a hotel room somewhere in North London, without telling him where he was and who he was to meet. A pleasant, older man with a "low countries" accent entered the room and shook his hand. This was the managing director of the factory making high-tech electronic components for German secret weapons, who made a list of the valves that Commander Lincoln needed. Then the RAF officers hustled the Managing Director away so they could return him to his factory in occupied Europe before anyone knew he had gone anywhere. A week later a courier delivered a small suitcase, containing all the valves and other components that Commander Lincoln wanted, allowing him to work out what part of a ship's complex noise signature the torpedoes homed on. A "screamer" box was mass produced and fitted to many ships, not all of which were sensibly used but when they were, they substantially reduced the risk of being sunk.

Please don’t see this as telling you what to do, I can only speak from my own experience, but what I have found, and it’s taken a long time to realise it, is that you need to look after yourself first. It’s counterintuitive, and sounds selfish, but it’s not. Be kind to yourself, and you’ll be in a stronger position to give help to others. I’ve found all sorts of material on UA-cam that has helped considerably, especially when trying to relax and sleep. The answer really is within. I do wish you well. X

    Hello from the USA.
I am continually amazed at the shear volume of items laying about on the river Thames as well as various other shores. The value of some of them take my breath away.
The unbelievable length of history these places have seen and collected is astounding as is the realization that even if all the items laying on the surface were collected the very next tide or storm surge would bring even more to light!

Albeit my mother collects little Greek alabaster statuettes and I got her one of Jesus for Mother's Day. I asked her to keep it in a different spot on the shelf away from Pan the Satyr and the Greek goddesses I'd gotten her before. I may get her a Mary for Christmas. 😆

Oh, boy, there were so many things that fascinated me this week!
First, the lovely orange glass you found at about 5:58, as you said, is industrial: it is an insulator for electric power lines, and they are collectable over here in the USA. We don't have Roman coins and pottery, but we do have old glass insulators that were used on lines across thousands of miles of prairie, forest, farmland, and desert. When old lines were abandoned, they were typically just left to fall into ruin. You can still find lone poles with cross beams rotting alone in the middle of nowhere.
Second, when you showed us the silver bit that you thought might be a cigarette holder, my first thought was that it may have been the handle to a razor. I recall my father having something similar, which he got in the 1940s or 50s.
There's more, but I'll finish by saying that, truly, one of the things that helps with MY anxiety is watching you and Si. I have several UA-cam creators that I follow, but you two are the ones I most look forward to seeing each time I get a notification. You are good, curious, caring people, who share such fascinating stories, with empathy and considerate connection across centuries, but also between living people. I find that your videos do two seemingly opposed things for me: you provide an escape from the world while simultaneously connecting me to it.
    Thanks so much!

My anxiety levels plummet when I watch your channel, I was in awe of the twinkling 6 point stars dancing on the water when you held the amber bottle up to the sun, so beautiful, thank you for sharing

my guess for the "drawer pull" would be a small font from a home offertory catholics have them in their houses usually just inside the door it reminds me very much of my grannies one

Instead of an ash tray, the little silver vessel could have held holy water for a personal shrine in a private home. Catholic homes often had these in times past.

Lourdes was a huge destination for the Irish especially in the fifties, sixties and seventies. Lots of people looking to be healed. Lots of stories about healings.

I love watching you discover treasures! I see all the ‘river glass’ you pass up & I want so badly to reach in & grab it! I’ve been collecting sea glass since I moved to Myrtle Beach & would gladly pay for shipping if you’d grab me some! My mom was born & raised in Liverpool & some British river glass would round out my collection!
    Keep hunting…love your videos!
