Behringer UB-Xa - - Milestone - - by "The Synth King"

- This video showcases a complete song I´ve composed and produced with sounds exclusively from the Behringer UB-Xa (except drums). The opening bass line was made with the built in step sequencer running in sync to the DAW. I've used a single reverb and two delay plugins for this track. There is no EQing or dynamic processing involved. All sounds were recorded directly into the audiointerface. Enjoy the music, ‘like’ and subscribe to my channel and click the ‘bell’ icon to get video updates.
Ive been keeping up to date with the ub-xa ever since it was first publically conceptualized by Behringer a few years ago. Ive honestly never been more excited for a product to release in my life hahaha. I absolutely cant wait to get one when behringer releases it, it sounds incredible even through a UA-cam video
Great synth times for those who will live in the next century!
I like your description (no EQ or dynamics)...this is how it should be done (not that I could do that), keeping the synth sounds rich in subharmonics...when you darn payed for that, lol. Great demo!
Behringer seems to be slowly building up a physical version of Arturia's V Collection. I like it.
"slowly" is the operative word
Don’t companies typically release videos of this sort when the product has shipped to retailers? I’m absolutely impressed…but it feels like we are being teased with a prototype. I will wait until loopop and Nick Batt have a review model before I become additionally excited. Way to go (wait to go).
It's being made but I think only a few hundred have been made so far.
They posted a video of the Solina being finished and ready for production. 6 months later: still nothing...
"The UB-Xa is one of our most complex products we have ever designed in our 35 years of history. 15 engineers worked over 4 years, delivering 8 hardware revisions and countless firmware upgrades, while co-innovating with 20 beta testers who all own the original OB-Xa synth. Our objective was to spend as much time and resources it takes and only release it when it is perfect. The UB-Xa is now completed and we’re ramping up for production.
As Uli stated from the beginning, this synth was never meant as a commercially driven product, but rather a labor of love. In fact, it might never make us any money and that’s OK. For that reason, we plan to offer if at the lowest possible price and at a fraction of competitive products.
We’re sorry this has taken so long but we now have a synth jewel we’re very proud of and a fantastic platform that will allow us to deliver new poly synths at a much shorter time. We’d like to thank all the beta testers who spent years and countless hours to help us bring the UB-Xa to life.
And finally, we’d like to thank all of you for your support and patience. You’re the reason why we love what we do." - Behringer, via Facebook
@@Ni5ei I saw that. I am just trying to figure out if Behringer wants to take pride in paying engineers and designers to recreate legendary products for the sake of doing so or if there is a commercial retail strategy to bring their recreations to the general public. I mean I am way impressed at their drive, abilities, and talents, but what about consumerism? They could recreate a Jupiter 8 but then not sell it? Maybe the prototypes are too expensive and simply not cost effective to mass produce. I am still fascinated by their efforts nonetheless.
@@thefool2007 I hear ye
I think it's today's climate with chip shortages and stuff. The 909 took a while too.
Heck yeah another UB-XA demo! Hope we see this released soon.
Behringer commented this may be release this December 2023, but also said “no promises”.
Keep hoping, lol
@@kierenmoore3236 this isn’t a synth I’m interested in so no “hoping” needed.
It’s a shame we’ll never see this machine. I gave up and bought an OB-6.
Wish I was privileged enough to afford an OB-6 😭
Great synth the OB6, I wish I hadn't sold mine.
@@fortheloveofnoise I am still paying on it now my friend. I had to sell a bunch of things and finance the rest, but it’s well worth the investment!
@@silvertongues2 I got enough together to get the desktop and it’s my favorite synth of all time. You should consider reinvesting and grab another one!
I just sold my OB6 but not because I didn't love it.
Behringer guys! Give us this beauty NOW! 🤞This is what we want sooooo long time ago. Keep doing! 👍

Oh My 🤩 Sounds so good
Well sorry that anyone would feel negative that Behringer is recreating these iconic synthesizers and making them affordable well 1 percenters there's 99 percent of us who wants to be able to afford to have those great sounds in our production. It's all about the Music art and freedom of choice. Thanks Behringer
As a keyboard player and a kid of the 80's I just hope Behringer is true to the promised attention on the keybed and playing feel. The promises about the keyboard action and poly aftertouch combined with the Oberheim sound really is what makes me want this thing, if it is well priced.
As interesting and good sounding synth as the DeepMind is, the keyboard version is really sub par and awfully plastic.
I agree. I have Deepmind 12 and key bed could be better. I wouldn't mind paying extra 50 bucks for better springs and pads.
I hope Behr get the synths out of the factory before PRC invades Taiwan.
"I am absolutely furious that Behringer has the audacity to make affordable recreations of classic synths, and I will never use one in the music that I'm not writing that no one will ever listen to. I can't wait to complain about their next synth video instead of writing music, all my thoughts and opinions must be shared publicly!!!" - Sad Little Synth Man

Are the voice panning trimmers inside the synth, similar to the original OBXa?
There is a dedicated menu for voice panning.
Thanks! I hope it’s customizable per voice. The OBX8 only has modes.
@@joe.akielaszek it is.

WOW !!!! Really cool man !!
Nice, the 80s are back, baby!
I’m so curious to when this will be released? I want one of these so bad
Still no clear answer. The whole world is suffering from chips shortage due to US-China trade feuds and ban. Big company like Apple or Samsung don't have to worry But small brand like Behringer definitely feel the impact. My only hope is that Behringer will use this time to improve more this synth
@@guppymilk5726 behringer is NOT a small brand. there are probably other good reasons why behringer has had a much slower output in response to the chip shortage compared to other comparably sized companies who have continued producing gear, but it isnt because behringer is small and it drives me nuts when people imply that.
behringer has a global presence with 3500 employees, and their peak revenue last year was 30 million dollars. korg by comparison has only 290 employees, and grossed 7.6 million dollars last year. between 2020 and now they have released at least 17 hardware products by my count, far more than behringer.
@@loreleiofthemist respectfully you're doing the wrong google search. Behringer is Music Tribe, which has over $800M in revenue. Not $30M like you're getting mixed data on (wrong company called Behringer). The production slow-down is partly chip and supply chain issues, but partly cautious production planning as the world came out of the pandemic bubble and faces tighter financials. The company has its own chip fabs, but it still reliant on the overall supply chain for parts.
Good things come to those that wait. Cheers for the new demo
Brilliant. Thank you Synth King for another great video showcasing the ubxa.

Great track! - love it!
Would be nice if they actually release the damn thing!
It won't happen, nowadays they only make demo synths, 1 piece per new synth. 🙂 It's like art paintings...lol

Ok...I was sceptical about the B-ARP 2600, I admit...and then they delivered it, to my surprise! lol I want to see the "toy synths" they announced a year ago, I would buy them all.
But for what I have been saying all the time about having too many synthesizers and having decided 2023 was my zero purchase year, I would otherwise want one of these.
This is awesome
Nice timing with Behringer's news that they're ready to manufacture.
Nice grovey tune too.

Cool song, beautiful and lush tone. I’ve been wanting this synth.
Great video, thank you!

Unfortunately I bought myself a DX7 IID last month so I just fulfilled my need for a 61 key master keyboard with aftertouch that includes a good synth engine.
I don't blame Behringer if they have prioritized putting scarce chips into their bread & butter products instead of synths, that would always be the right business decision to make.
But your DX7 IID hasn't got a poly-aftertouch keyboard, has it?
@@Synth_Tools true, but regular aftertouch is good enough for my needs. For expressive parts I use my wind synth because it has motion sensors etc.
Nice. I like the nod to Prince's 1999 with those lovely chords. Will curb my enthusiasm until they're in the shops, then I'm sure I will get excited.
One point is resolved now: It does jump!
And as demonstrated it also does massive fat layers, so that the full spectrum is filled up in some parts of this song.
For me this is the demo that i've been waiting for, and doubtless many others with me. Thank you!
i would like some additional technical information though:
The number of voices?
Is keyboard split supported?
What audio/midi, and possibly cv connections?
Surely i'm getting more and more interested here ...
Specs have been mentioned before (16 voices, single/split/dual mode, din/usb midi, mono/stereo out, pedal & controller inputs)
Well, the knobs look like they'd pop off at the slightest breeze, but that's no biggie, and the rest looks (and more importantly *sounds*) pretty decent! My skepticism has officially turned to excitement. 😊
The knobs are rock solid, no need to worry about that. Overall build quality is superb. You will get a lot of synth for a reasonable price
@@Bernd_Bruening That's great to hear! From my phone screen they look like those cheap plastic satin-finish ones, but I guess I'm happily mistaken.
I was already intrigued a year or two ago when I leaned it's going to have PolyAt, but the sound hadn't really grabbed me yet. Since your latest demonstration here though, I'm sold. 😊👍 It looks like a great, modern solution for what I was hoping to find a Matrix 6 for.

Announcement this morning that it’s going into production.
My Dream comes true...
WOW! Will this thing be mine some day??? ❤❤❤ Thnx ULI!
Sounds like Oberheim...
Beautiful thing, but it reminds me of a dobro blues guitar, very narrow in its sound profile. For that reason I'd steer towards other things...
My only electric guitar is a knock-off dobro (Eastwood Delta 6, a P90 and piezo). That being said, I'm looking at an Artcore with 2 buckers. Different strokes - most people would be looking for either a strat, lp or tele. That being said, an OB style synth wouldn't be my only synth, if I had a choice. If you have MORE than one synth, it could be a nice complement. And, if it was good enough for Prince....
@@GizzyDillespee I think I get what the OP is saying, and you're echoing it with bringing up Prince. Great artist for his time, but I can't help but notice how derivative everything tends to sound made on a lot of these instruments. There are things happening in synths now that are far more compelling for me personally. MPE capable 'vintage' style synths like the OB6 take this sound and run with it in a fascinating way - taking something like the OB6 and using MPE with something like a Linnstrument or the Expressive E, for me has a greater capacity for new horizons. Again, I get what you're saying - it IS nice sounding. But so is a Steinway, yet it's much more compelling to play a Klavins Una Corda in 2023. It's an exciting time for instruments, and a re-hash of something that follows the rote laws verbatim just doesn't get me razzed up either. Good luck with your Artcore, Adam. At the end of the day, it's what you do with it, isn't it?
@@lawrencegreenwood4002 Exactly right. Great for people who play in their bedroom and rehash old ideas, but the options on the table now are incredible - MPE is a subtle devil - it seems like nothing much on a spec sheet, but my God - the sounds people get out of the expressive E as a controller and a synth is impressive...E?
@@jacobuselwood Expressive E is the company, Osmose is the synth, E touche` is the pedal.
@@GizzyDillespee I think a good choice the Artcore ,, I am not a " fan boy" but I have several Ibanez guitars, a few Artcore lines, and love each and every one of them. As for the OB being the only synth, well , you gotta start somewhere, and that OB ain't a bad place to start... I really enjoy both OB-6 and OB- X8... Great tools/ instruments....
it sounds really good but at least not in this demo it doesn't sound super "Oberheim-y". But it sounds great nonetheless, I want one!

Not Bad! But Not an OBX8, and possibly only a bit better the best plugins (if not equal to). I guess it all boils down to what you want to spend, if you want to play it live, and how reliable it will be after 5-10 years of continual use. We'll have to see that about the OBX8 as well. I chose NOT to get the OBX8 because my Studio Electronics Omega 8 does all the Oberheim sounds really REALLY well.
Maybe, but only the synth consoomer crowd has the slightest chance of distinguishing a difference, especially in a complete mix. But I agree that live performance is about the only reason I could see to buy something like this other than the fun of playing with it. I'll stick with plugins.
That Studio Electronics Omega 8 looks like a beast - nice
The company every one loves to hate who makes products everyone never admits to buying or admit they’re great.
I love my (better than a Juno 106) Deepmind 6. And you’ll have to pry it from my cold dead hands.
I fall deeper in love with my Deepmind 12D every time I play it.
Numerous people say the stuff is good, also reviewers. I own several. But my DM12 isn’t on par with my Juno 60. That’s not hate, just a very common agreement.
@@vaiman7777 perhaps. But I’ll take the built-in effects, iOS AND MacOS patch creation and management and general not-so-long-in-the-toothness of the Deepmind over the nominal difference in sound that I I defy anyone to actually detect in a track mix over an actual Juno 106 any and every day.
They have for sure made a few good units (all based on past classics from other companies, but still …)
@@WrvrUgoThrUR I love my modern gear. But there’s sonically a difference, especially when you’re layering up.
Old synths have their flaws certainly, but they are a joy to use and play. Way more than my modern counterparts.

The initial portamento patch was a spot on OB-X Preset...but I really could have done without the loud generic drums and epic obfuscating synth overdubbing. I was truly looking forward to a new video from you, but I didn't at all get a feel for how this synth actually sounds. For the love of god, why do you feel the need to go so over the top with these UBXA recordings, less is more man. It's like you can't stop yourself. Please I beg you, just make a bloody video playing through, and creating some patches like you did with the Elka. I've owned a number of Obies over the years, so that's all I require to analyze whether the UB-XA is for me or not.

It's the sound quality of the recording.
I want to like this but it does NOT sound like an Oberhiem at all. I’ve owned the OBX and matrix 6 and really regret parting with them I was hoping this would be a replacement but damn I guess not with this sound
Well, 20 beta testers had an OB-Xa for comparison. I think they did their best to make it sound spot on. If you owned an OB-X you should have realized that there are at least two factory presets in this demo, which sound identical. The same presets were used in the OB-SX and the Xa.
“At all”? Really. Sheesh.
I own 4 Oberheims and this sounds precisely like them
I think it actually sounds like a OB-XA. Even if it doesn’t (I think it does), it sounds great. How some people can’t see this?. Is bias so irrational they can’t be objective with an opinion?.
They announced this five years ago FFS. I'm utterly fed up with Behringer announcing vapourware. I hope this is actually shipping now.
Heaven forbid they take time to develop and refine a product before pushing it to consumers.
I'm actually glad they announce stuff years in advance... it helps me plan accordingly years in advance and also helps me know what to save for.
Had over 2 years snuffed out by Covid and chip shortages, so, yeah --- some things happened.
Why be so upset about this? Behringer just has a different marketing technique. It will be available when it is in the shops, like any other company's product. As you can read in the comments and conclude for yourself from this video: There is sufficient wild interest to keep the project going and production ready.
It will be a sales hit for Behringer when the time comes.

No, just 2 part with 4 voice per part.
@@Bernd_Bruening That’s what I thought. This is a clone OP!
@@jansonrawlings8169 was the original 16 voices? Did it have the same memory? No. This is called progress. And it’s a shame so many polyphonic modern synths don’t leverage multitimbrality beyond a simple 2 voice split or layer setup. Limits live sequenced use without a DAW.

Did you not see all the announcements yesterday? There have been a few things going on to disrupt production, if you’ve been living in a hole for a while. Behringer are delivering products as soon as they are physically able.
Chip shortage dummy
You act like coronavirus only happened to Behringer lol
@welcometosynthpunk Because they are multi million pound companies and have a massive stockpile of chips, Behringer can not order chips in that quantitie without paying extra and putting the cost of the synths up.
Chip shortage, another bigger more established brands have access to services that Behringer do not and to gain access they would have to pay like the big boys putting the cost of this sythersizor up in price massively and destroy the Behringer rule. Low cost quality products.
Still waiting the PPG......
Me too!
Sounds really interesting but there's a tad bit of (sub)bas on the bassdrum which can make it difficult at times to really hear the synth itself. This might also indicate that this one is definitely not nr.1 on the Power Rangers of Phatness scale. But let's be honest, the original OB-Xa was 5000 dollars in 1980, with inflation that's 18.000 dollars in 2023!?! The Behringer Ub-Xa will go for about 1400 dollars. Do the math. You don't have to be a rocket engineer for this one. Love it or hate it, but I do believe they're doing everything they can at Behringer to make it sound as good as it gets.
I think you need to check your monitors. There is no "sub" bass on the drums.
@@Bernd_Bruening Ok that's really strange. I'm listening on a (pretty decent) soundset including two active subwoofers. And the subs go pretty crazy if I don't turn them down substantially. I just listened again to be sure, and yes, especially on the bassdrum it's really noticable. Maybe it's only on the bassdrum but there's definitely sub in there.
@@Bernd_Bruening ps: the sub cut-off frequency could be the culprit but mine is set around 105 Hz which is pretty standard.
@@danthreepwood2760 these are ready to go drums from steinberg groove agent. I'm using Neumann KH-310 plus a pair of Klein & Hummel O-800 as electronic bass trap. I didn't notice any sub basses. There is no EQing or dynamic processing involved. I play and record the individual parts directly into the DAW, do a rough mixing, add a bit of delay and reverb where needed and do a mixdown in the box. The resulting stereo file is not processed in any way.
@@Bernd_Bruening Alright thanks for the clarification. I've just listened to each sub seperately to be sure and I know what (partly) seems to be the case: while one sub has a cut-off knob, and the other doesn't, it causes a little ''bleeding'' of the frequencies creating a longer and heavier bass sound than intented. Also, and I have to be honest here, the ''bass boost'' knob was turned on on the sub without cut-off, exponentially worsening the situation. Whoops 🤡. So yeah, that partly solved the problem. But, and I stand by this one, there's still definitely quite some sub bass going on on the bassdrum. But not nearly as bad as I described so I will change that!
this sounds phantastic. For me the 1st composition is a mix between Stevie Wonder and Billy Preston. Great performance also for the rest. Wished I could play luike that...

On the 8th of January 2018 Uli Behringer asked on GS if it made sense to build an OB-Xa clone. Behringer was gauging the demand. After some time they said, in the same thread, that they would make the UB-Xa but that it would be a side project on the engineer's free time. Late Jan 2019 they unveiled the first photos of the UB-Xa prototype. About mid 2022 they got their first tool made sample of the UB-Xa done. 12+ prototypes and 20 beta testers later In June 2023 they announced that the UB-Xa was fully developed and scheduled for production. On Thursday the 17th of August 2023 they simply posted "They will never produce it” with a picture of several units being tested. In other words, it's currently in the production stage.

I think if you didn’t know and somebody played you this demo minus the 1999 reference you might not have guessed that this synth is supposed to be an Oberheim clone. Sounds ok, but does not have the extreme warmth and richness of an OBX8. Which of course is no bargain. Also the UB to me does not sound superior to software emulations.
I'm not sure if this will ever finally hit retail, did you know that behringer owned the rights to Oberheim, but sold them back To Tom Oberheim, I've owned for about 3-weeks now the OB-X8, and with this bad boy I have the advantage of sounding like any of the OBs, and the Ubxa doesn't sound like my OB-X8, I'm listening through high-end studio monitors focal trio 11 be, I really hear what people are saying it doesn't sound like an Oberheim but similar with some sounds, I never bother with knock-offs if I really love a synth and want the real deal I rather have the real thing, but for people that can't afford an OB, and want to feel like they've got the OB, then good for them, just don't have the real one in front of you and comparing on high-end monitors lol
Well, all beta testers had the real thing, the OB-Xa, not the OB-X8, and high end monitors as well. The UB-Xa does sound like the real thing and additionally can make sounds that the OB-Xa can’t produce. Stay tuned. You’ll be surprised.

It doesn't sound like the ob xa
@mirkomarkovic3438 it does
@@Bernd_Bruening it's an approximation, yes
It sounds like a well behaved middle of the road analog poly , but not like an 1980s bentley or jaguar proper poly , i'm shure behringer could come up with an ace original design of themselves instead.
There will be a lot more demos out hopefully soon showing how versatile this synth can sound. In this demo I wanted to show that this synth is not just a recreation of an 1980 oldtimer, but a lot more than that.
