Certainly not the quickest way or most convenient way to make a Hammer - but probably quite satisfying doing it on an antiquated machine. I still remember using a Shaper in my Machinists Shop Class in HS when I made a set of Parallel Clamps - which BTW I still have 50 years later. :)

I always enjoy your shop videos. The Foundry series is also highly recommended for anyone that's interested in that specialty. Mr Pete (Lyle) is a true expert in his field, and I always enjoy his latest videos. Please keep up your great work!
    Thanks,

I made a similar hammer in 1979 in my college metals class. Ours were made using hand tools. Hack saw and file. Handle was threaded steel round bar with plastic grip. They were case hardened. I still have and use it! Very handy in electricians tool pouch! Thanks for the video Mr. Pete!

I still have the hammer I made in middle school, we called it junior high back then. It was made from mild steel and case hardened after. We didn’t have milling machines or shapers, just files and saws a drill press and sander as it was really a wood working shop.

The hammer is now more than 35 years part of my toolbox and well used.

Lyle, you are permitted to make as many copies of any book that you own for your personal use. Doing this doesn't violate copyright laws. Making copies to sell is obviously different. My dad used to make copies of auto repair manuals, and put them in protective sleeves so that he could have a copy to consult at his finger tips without soiling the book.

I have one I made in tech school. We made many different kinds of hammers. I still sometimes make some for gifts. A couple of years ago I made a body hammer for one of my daughters boyfriend who was taking auto Collision repair. He thought it was cool. After showing it to his classmates, they wanted on too. I had to tell him they probably couldn't afford one of my hammers. 😎

I believe 'tool steel' is somewhat of a generic term. Is there a more technical description of a steel alloy which would be appropriate for the hammer? i. e. a hardenable alloy? And a description of the heat treatment steps required?

Yep, made that hammer in early 1969. Our hammer handle was 3/4-knurled, turned to 1/2-13, screwed into the head, then peened, and ground. Nice work. Genesis 4:22 KJV And Zillah, she also bare Tubal-cain, an instructor of every artificer in brass and iron:..., that certainly describes you.

Low carbon steel can only be "Case" hardened since it does not contain enough carbon to harden in the usual manner. Hopefully Mr. Pete can show us how to Case harden this hammer after the shaper work is finished.

But will my son know what kind of oil to put in his mower or what Flux is used for? I don't know. I'd searched for a mechanic basic life skills course we could take together. I found none. @@jennawildah6514 We always worry about the young ones we love & if we taught them enough. You're an awesome mom, I can tell. In the end I tell myself that if we give them the basics and point them in the right direction then that's all we can do. Kids will use what we give them and add to it if that's their desire. I find it difficult but we have to show them the freedom of success by their own accomplishments. Kind of how birds teach their young to fly, give them a shove and let them soar.😂 And soar they will.
