Learn Spanish Tenses: Preterit (Past Simple) - What you need to know!

- In this video I will teach you all you need to know about the past simple tense in Spanish, or "preterit", or "pasado", "pretérito indefinido", as some call it. Don’t get confused with all these names, I will explain them to you. You will learn what the Spanish pretérito/past simple is, how we form it or conjugate it, and when and how we use it. This past tense in Spanish is one of the most important tenses you need to learn as a Spanish language student because otherwise you can’t talk about what you did yesterday, last year, last Sunday, etc. Imagine somebody is studying English and can’t yet say “I went to the store”, “I did my homework”, “I slept”. Well, it is the same in Spanish. We need it to express past specific actions that were done. The Spanish past simple, or Spanish preterit, is a time that you can set in the past clearly, sometimes with a beginning and end, it is a time that in your mind does not last, it is past that can be seen as steps in your life, and you in your life timeline you can set markers and see those events. So here you will learn the why, what, how, and when of the Spanish past simple, pretérito, or indefinido.

She is good and passionate indeed, but teaching has to be to the point and concise. Too much explanation makes it tedious and repetitive. It should be a 20-minute class, not 46.

I have been learning Spanish for 2 months now, using mostly online language courses. These have been helpful as a start. However, I became frustrated in just memorizing phrases and words. I have realized that my learning style requires that I become aware of PATTERNS. Ana has helped me a great deal in seeing patterns for learning verb tenses. Muchas gracias, Ana!
I've learned a ton of Spanish vocabulary. Now, I'm focusing a lot on grammar. We adults need grammar rules, though in context.

Hola Christian. Yo hablo ingles como una nativa. Tengo que pensar en una manera diferente para entender español escrito y hablado. Es muy difícil entender porque unos nativos españoles hablan muy rápido. Quiero mejorar mi comprehensión con mi español hablado. El subjuntivo y los tensos son confundidos también. Pero me encanta hablar español.

Me gustaría comentar sobre el episodio de la cuerda del tampón en la agencia de terapias de belleza, Me estaba sometiendo a un procedimiento de depilación con cera íntima del vello púbico, era un poco doloroso porque mi barriga estaba un poco sensible porque estaba en el día 5 de mi ciclo de sangrado. La practicante que estaba haciendo el procedimiento de depilación pensó que el hilo de mi tampón era un vello púbico blanco y aplicó la cera sobre el hilo, luego quitó la tira de cera rasgando el cabello y el hilo del tampón junto con el tampón empapado en sangre de mi vagina íntima. canal y en las manos de la terapeuta de belleza adjunta a la cera usada y la tira de cera. Fue muy vergonzoso para mí pasar por esto. ¡Me enviaron una factura para pagar una compensación a esta mujer terapeuta de belleza! Conmocionado por esto, creo que tal vez esta es una forma de magia negra o hechizos que causan que ocurran cosas desagradables.

This was excellent. It's been almost 30 years since high school spanish. I've forgotten all the grammar but maintained a bit of vocabulary. I really liked the way she explains past simple, and the conjugation is sorta coming back to me. I am Vietnamese, with your lessons help me alot to learn Spanish step by step through your guidelines in English. In the past I already studied French at beginner level, however it made me understand what your explainations are, especially in self- reflection verbs.

This is one the best channels on the site for learning the Spanish language, many other channels try to fit too much info into a ten minute video. This helped me greatly in understanding when to use certain tenses and how to form the words

Hi Ana, thank you for this lesson, it helps me with the verbs I usually use to frame and to understand sentences in the past. Keep up to mention the 2nd person plural (vosotros) for us Europeans learning Spanish, since we need it in Spain.
