    This video shows that the enemy violated every facet of successful ACM. They did not act in a coordinated fashion, they were poorly positioned to take advantage of their numerical superiority, they gave away advantages by being behind the curve and trying to move to support each other instead of maintaining their offensive stance, turned cold instead of notching to maintain the press, lost SA and did not use their longer ranged missiles at an advantageous distance of over 15 nm, and finally, when they did attack, only attacked one opponent at a time when they are fully capable of multiple launches against multiple opponents. Conversely GS and Sonde used teamwork, coordination, and good communication, while maintaining good SA, to quickly cut the fight from 3:2 to 2:2, then when their opponents were disorganized they maintained good communication, SA, and coordinated an attack against the remaining MiG's which quickly eliminated their opponents.
    GS and Sonde could have been flying F4 Phantoms with Sparrows, and they would probably have won this match using the same tactics. The enemy might have been good pilots, but they were very poor opponents.

    • @GrowlingSidewinder
      @GrowlingSidewinder  5 років тому +15

      Kris Welter I agree with all of those points. Chemistry between the pilots is also a huge help as you said they deff could have made life much much harder for us, even splashing 1 of us quickly could resulted in a 3v1 or 2v1 situation which would have been an easy fight to win. Deff coordination and good communication are key in any fight. very good insightful comment brother 👍.

  • @mrshambler23

    (1)The scenario of the video was explained clearly.
    (2)The scenario based pvp layout was entertaining to watch.
    (3)The video was educational due to clearly narrating both the combat footage and tacview.
    (4)The combat was over very quickly. Depending on how you pick your video footage, a longer engagement could possibly be more entertaining to watch.
    (5)I'm surprised over the lack of missiles fired from the red team. I would be interested to see how a team of air superiority fighters (su-27/f-15) would do in a similar situation when playing as red or aggressor squadron. Could they have completed their mission more aptly if employing a more patient strategy of trying to bleed the blue sides missiles, Taking turns to go cold and play it safe?
    (6)How do you select footage for the videos? Do you play it once and take the first try of the mission or do you play several times and pick the most entertaining/educational one?

    • @GrowlingSidewinder
      @GrowlingSidewinder  5 років тому +7

      Sten hi sten, yes the way I do it is run it once or twice as a warm up. Let everyone do a couple test runs to see how they want to play it. And then we do the fight regardless of who wins I'll use whatever one comes out "good" the first time thru. Really all I'm looking for is a version where no one had any connection issues and got disconnected for no reason, or lag, or if someone blacked out in a high G turn and hit the ground, we'll probably do another run.

    AIM-120s are very dangerous.
    My bro in law who was WSO in a Su-30 was attacked with 3 AIM-120C5 on 27th Feb from a distance of 30 nautical miles.
    Luckily he managed to evade them.
    Plus the El-8222WB onboard helped too.
    His colleague in a Mig-21 in another sector got hit by AIM-120C and was taken POW for a short time. The missiles failed to hit his wingman though.

  • @hirumaryuei
    @hirumaryuei 5 років тому +13

    I don't agree with some of your analysis of the situation, especially where the R77 doesn't track (because Thor went nose cold on you) but I can definitely say one conclusion is that Sunde is an excellent wingman. He does what he needs to do, follows his flight lead and communicates the situation well. I think that without him on your wing this would have been a much more difficult fight.

    • @Surpriseify
      @Surpriseify 5 років тому +6

      Hey man thanks for the kind words, really GS is very easy to fly with, calm and not the type that tries to micromanage your every move.
      Regarding the R77, remember that it is an active radar type missile, i.e assuming the missile has gone pitbull (77's does so off the rails) Thor's radar is no longer any factor in that missiles guidance.
      I think perhaps the nature of the maneuver that GS made, the high speed dive and then sudden quick reversal just had the 77 pull excessive lead, forcing its target out of its gimball limits, and go stupid as a result? Perhaps anyway.

    A question about notching a missile in the case it has already gone pittbull (an ARH missile obviously): Is it supposed to work the same way it does with a missile that is being guided by the aircraft's own radar (semi-active mode, TWS) ...?
    Flying perpendicular to a (fighter/aircraft) radar filters out the Doppler effect (or rather the computer algorythmn filters out a target of 90 deg heading), so it "blinds" only a pulse-Doppler radar, right? (feel free to correct and inform me) I have a hard time believing that the tiny radar within an AAM would pack a pulse-Doppler radar & a computer to calculate the Doppler sift (at least in the case of the AIM-54 Phoenix, which was conceived in the era of analogue computers) I understand that the notching manouver might take the aircraft out of the missiles radar cone and thus break the lock.

    awesome video mate, and love the tacview at the end, really in-depth on how you engaged your targets. just wondering, with the missile sounds, are they a mod or original dcs sounds cause they sound amazing. keep up the great work.

    Great content and skills guys! Also Tax did really well there! When you went for the deck to defend that R-77 I felt that was going to be a hit...Funny what happened in TacView... Also curious the Fulcrums didn’t launch sooner? Did they have a fuzzy picture for some reason?

    I don’t know if they have a program for the super hornet e or f model or even the g variant for iron hand strikes but I think a full a to a load out on a super hornet is unreal 10 aim-120c and also 6 aim-9x with drop tank on centerline station would be cool to see videos on the super hornets f/a-18 has always been one of my favorite aircraft

    Would be more interresting if awacs were in the mix, because Hornets here had full SA wilst Migs were always going to get surprised. Their defending looked sluggish too, I guess they need more practice with the Fulcrum. Keep on flying dude ;-)

    Recently subscribed GS. Top quality channel mate! 👌👍Watching DCS blows my mind the same way FA18 Interceptor on the Amiga 500 did 20+ years ago when my dad upgraded our Commodore 64.
    Would you consider doing an upload on your PC/VR set-up and approximate cost to get started? Loved the clip with your non AI RIO working together in the Tomcat, despite the outcome.
    Keep up the great work GS!!!👊

    First of all, you should do more this kind of objective videos, this was really amazing like in the old days as you re-created the Iraq campaign/missions.
    Usually, I'm not a fan of the Tacview analysis but this time I wanted to know how three MiG-29S, with two how you've said experienced and aggressive pilots couldn't get one splash. Especially I was surprised that they don't even try to put you both onto the defensive with the R-77s.
    So I've watched the Tacview analysis and I have a possible explanation of why the R-77 didn't track properly. As I had seen this, I opened the FC3 manual and searched for the datasheet of the R-77. My explanation is that it did track you but wasn't fired at a proper angle so as the missile was fired the seekerhead hit its limit of +/-60° as it tried to get lead on you.
    I hope one of the MiG pilots read this comment for a better understanding. They really should staid together.
    As always nice Video Growling Sidewinder!

    Growling Sidewinder i have a question..Why is it when your in cockpit and opposing jets fly by mach 2 that their isnt any sound barrier broken but in cinema replay or cinema flight that their is a sound barrier bust?...is it something as far as volume turned off or anything. i'm just wondering about that

    • @GrowlingSidewinder
      @GrowlingSidewinder  5 років тому +1

      Quinton Campbell it's probably a sound effect they haven't added in. I'm sure stuff like that will eventually make its way into the sim.

    Hey Sidewinder. I enjoy your Vids so much, always a pleasure listening to you and your knowledge. At the end, this was the Wild Weaasel tactic am i right? Exept u don't have the HARM Missile for engaging on Radar Stations, but ur doing it still with the Hunter and Killer tactic is that correct?. Anyway, keep it up with this great Channel and i will stay tuned for more. King Snake out :)

    • @GrowlingSidewinder

      hi bro, ur correct in the sense that it was wild weasel style with Sunde distracting or "luring" the threat to engage him so I could come in easily and hit the target yes. And thank you for the support man it's much appreciated

    Not enough fire suppression from the migs, vigorous defense on them against the spamram except for their first killed not reacting) but the danger of defense is relying on it and losing initiative. In the end their defense was not coordinated. The air force concept of a rolling linear attack, one shoots and turns back while the next arrives behind to press would have worked better. A parallel L shaped attack is trickier in flight for risk of fratricides but can be delineated in a high low double ship formation. A bait and a chaser attack is another variant of that. If the coverage of the anti aircraft systems had been larger, the migs could have baited you into the zone.
