That reminds me of an old tri-cycle John Deere tractor my dad had. It rans so slow it seemed like it stopped until it fired again, every second or so.... had a huge flywheel on the side to keep it rolling through between strokes.
Yes, the sound from this 4 cylinder semidiesel is nice.... I saw your profil and your int. of cruiseships. I was one week on a cruise with NCL Norwegian Jewel. They had 5 engines with 20 000 hp !
You always get a picture of the reliability of these engines by the bloke in the engine room? Alert, conscious, semi conscious, unconscious, (asleep)? If the blokes asleep and the boat is making progress well it has a reliable engine.
What was the make of the engine? 300hp isn't much for a tugboat by today's standards but this could haul the biggest ships at sea at the time it was made.
That would be great. I don't think we have anything like they have in Europe around here. Love their classics. I'm on a farm north of Battle Creek just a bit.
@LibertaerUeberAlles The captain Stig Helge Samuelson, like to handle it with care. You kan see his comments on this page. The propellers is adjustable so you dont need a gear. The pitch can go from fast forward to zero and to then revers.
Yes, slowly and usually at an angle. The old direct reversing diesels had to be stopped, levers needed to be moved then it would be started in reverse. That took time and sometimes they didn't restart... More than one ended up crashing into the dock.
many Diesels especially marine types are 2 stroke. This enables them to start and run in either direction. This engine looks kind of like a hot bulb engine.
Strange that it only sounds like a twin!!? Shame that departure was so gentle, it surely didnt do it justice. It appeared that wind caught it and took it to sea.
Harry was built in Gavle, AB Atlas, year 1887. With a steam engine. In 1950 she was overhauled and with new motor, 300 hkr Skandia-motor. www.llaurin.se/
It's been converted, but the towing bit would have been on the aft deck where the canvas cover now creates a passenger area. (It may still be there, but not visible in this video; it would probably have been an "H-bit" like this one: tugboatsonline.com/boat_yard/rope_boats/ropeworkingstern.jpg.)
That boat has been very well maintained inside and out.

@steff4film
Du är välkommen.
If that's an old tug, where is the 'towing frame' that is usually mounted on top of the hull, that the ropes or cables hook on to?
It's been converted, but the towing bit would have been on the aft deck where the canvas cover now creates a passenger area. (It may still be there, but not visible in this video; it would probably have been an "H-bit" like this one: tugboatsonline.com/boat_yard/rope_boats/ropeworkingstern.jpg.)
The hook is still there but you can see it in this film
