    I wouldn't suggest a Piranha for a new player. The Wolfhound and Firestarter are bigger and more forgiving and durable than the 20 ton Piranha. The Urbanmech deserves a mention here as well. New players should try mediums and heavy mechs first.

      @@_ghost1e The time difference between the death of a noob light pilot and a noob assault pilot is the time they need to come to the front. The time when to die for the heavy and medium pilot noobs depends on the size and speed of their mech. The reason for their death isnt the class of the mech but their absent ability to fight and the unaviable ability to avoid enemy fire. The mech academy teaches you a lot about the keys but not to fight against other humans. In fact you know nothing about MWO after the academy. Players are fooled about in-game goals by rewarding dmg with cbills and kills are kind of a by-product of something and you get a little xp´s and a mark on a list in the cocpit. At its core, the game is only ever won by killing 12 enemies. Next, pgi says this is a teamplayer game. The random drops are not, there you have 12 enemys and 11 competitors. That means you have 12 to kill and 11 to use best for your effort. As long as the ppl wont learn/accept this reality and act corresponding, they are victims in every mech. just my 2 cents

    Back in the day, when I first started, long, long time ago... I still remember my first ones. Maybe not the best ones for new players, but I liked them well enough.
    Raven as far as lights are concerned - simple, reliable.
    Medium was Centuriuon - shielded arm, plenty of torso weapons and a big mount in the other arm - pretty good mech for learning how to position yourself and how to use your armour and arms.
    Catapult K2 - basically stock config with some refinenment - a PPC boat, which was not bad at the time.
    Stalker for assaults - tough, with fairly flexible weapon mounts. Stock config runs hot very quickly but it is a good platform for trying very different weapon configs - you can go easily for full missiles, for full energy or a mix of both. You are only missing on ballistics - and considering that mounts are symmetrical, it makes them easy and convenient to set up.

    I would disagree on the Piranha, it's unforgiving bc it's made of paper, close range, it requires A LOT of comprehension about team movement, positioning and the different phases of a match. The FOV is limited and it runs hot. I'd go with the Urbie R80 instead. FULL ACK tho on the Bushie and Marauder (maybe add some small lasers) and the fact that you left out Assaults completely.

      This mech is the absolute worst light for new players!
      You will die before even shooting once, it requires extreme map and enemy awareness and the utmost caution!
      It is a great mech and can deal serious damage with the skills and communication, but new players will lack both.
      I would recommend medium mechs instead, they have enough armor to get hit twice and use medium range weapons to be safe.
      Even the locust is safer to use because of how tiny it is.

    I enjoyed this video. Great presentation, no excess talk, just a description with good gameplay examples.
    I had no clue about how the hardpoints and weapon systems worked when I first started playing, so my first mech that I bought for myself with C-Bills was a Spider-5K. All ballistics with one laser, and I wanted a laser build.
    Turned out to be a blessing and a curse, the curse being I had to rely largely on short range light ballistics (the Spider is a light mech, so it can't rock heavy cannons unless you like having no armor), but the blessing being it forced me to improve my accuracy and strategy. I still had enough tonnage to equip one medium laser, so that became my little "poker" that I would use to annoy enemy players. I spent my first month or so barely making 100 damage per game, but once I learned ballistics have the highest crit percentage against unarmored components, my game started to get better and I started to get kills.
    After that I could buy more mechs, and because I had gotten used to playing with such a gimped mech in the beginning, the other mechs felt like powerhouses.
    Point being, a video like this would have helped lighten the learning curve considerably.
    LOVE the Piranha series. Such an annoying little backstabber. My Piranha-1 has 3 heavy small lasers and 8 light machine guns, so that thing literally cuts down heavy mechs from behind.
    My recommendations for beginners would be these:
    Light Mech: Urbanmech series with a fast XL engine. (I know the Urbie makes people mad, but it's a damn durable light mech with 360° visibility and a fair amount of available tonnage).
    Medium Mech: Viper series. Speed, weapons AND flight.
    Heavy Mech: Timberwolf series. Armor, weapons, durability, and a little bit of speed.

    Honestly it's hard not to suggest a Bushwhacker variant to new players. Everyone should own one, and a crab. They're both capable of punching WELL above their weight class in terms of raw weapons platforming, and they're both certainly tougher than they have any right to be in that weight class due to the combination of great hit boxes, relatively small profiles, and frankly just that creeping mistake everyone makes by over looking them until they've battered out heavy/assault levels of damage by the end of a round.

  • @JoshMD2009
    @JoshMD2009 2 роки тому +4

    I'd personally advise new players against getting lights or assaults as their first mechs because those mechs require map awareness and situational awareness to be able to maximize (plus lights are a pain to pilot if you have poor internet like me). My "top mechs" for new pilots would be:
    Shadow Hawk 2K - all weapon mounts are cockpit-level (great for hill-peeking) and torso-mounted (arms are shields), reasonably durable with a light engine (LFE 265 and LFE 280 are the sweet spots) and can run either as a laser boat (3x Large Pulse Lasers), MRM + laser hybrid (MRM 40 + 3x Med Lasers or MRM30 + 3x LPPC) or a brawler (3x SRM6 + 3 Med Lasers or 2x SRM 6 + 2x Snubs).
    Hellbringer Prime - with "A" head and "P" RT. Probably the best laser boat for beginners with 2x LPL + 4x ERML + ECM. Very forgiving because of the speed and ECM (just don't let it become a crutch for poor positioning), nice high torso mounts and reasonably cool-running. And once new players have had enough experience to play around with builds, they can switch up the omnipods for less C-bills as opposed to buying a new mech altogether.
    Dervish 6 MR/ Griffin 2N - 2x MRM 30 with Jump Jets (and ECM for the Griffin). Similar to your MAD-9M but with a little less alpha, no ghost heat and a bit more speed and maneuverability (also less inclined to draw a lot of aggro, being mediums). But the MAD 9M works, too!
    Bushwacker P2/X2 - similar to yours, but with 2x LB10-X and a couple of med lasers. The UAC Jam mechanic may be frustrating to beginners, and the spread fire of the LBX is easier to aim. Plus, they have something to shoot when the cannons run dry.
    Nice vid and good hunting!

    Marauder 9M is my favorite IS Heavy so I am kinda Biased. But it is SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO Goooooooooood. Very simple too, usually just a couple buttons. While having Good Hitboxes and Armor, and an ECM to boot.
    That Bushwhacker run was surprising when you went against the enemy Marauder and won honestly. I was impressed. I used to run a Twin UAC 10 Mad Dog for years, until balance changed so much it became ridiculously hard to put up crazy good performance, but I still remember outbrawling entire lances as the Last Man standing a few times very fondly. So seeing those weapons put up a good show on a smaller mech is nice.
    Piranha is a mixed bag. On one hand it is very simple just 1 button. But it having paper armor and no Field of View because of the cockpit makes it a very specialized mech. If you can wrap your head around moving fast and evading enemy Line of Sight and fire well, its absolutely a beast. But I wouldnt necessarily call it a good Starter mech for a new player. A Firestarter 9A with 8 Small Pulse lasers functions similarly, while being way tankier, due to nice Hit Boxes and a good amount of armor, while also being able to Bring Jump Jets. And thus would be a way better Starter Light.

    Personally I wouldn't recommend a light Mech, or anything that has a XL or RACs to any new player tbh.
    Hunchback 4SP (4 Medium Lasers, 2 SMRM6 with Artemis) - Still a super easy mech to handle. Zoom in with 89 kph, fire, zoom away.
    Hellbringer Omni (ECM, 2 Heavy Large Lasers, 3 ER Medium Lasers) - 55 Pinpoint Damage from out of nowhere and fast enough to reposition (or run away if needed)
    Runners Up:
    Orion -VA (Ultra AC20, 4 SRM4 with Artemis) - If you want to slug it out close and personal. Not as fast as the other two, so it could be a bit more of a challenge, but you can trade a few punches, you got the Armor.

    Background: I'm a dedicated light jock (~30% of matches) who's consistently ~97% percentile on Jarl's List. Just to be clear that I have a little bit of an idea what I'm talking about.
    I would strongly advise against new players buying *any* 20t light as their introduction to the class. 20-tonners have a much higher skill floor than most lights, just as lights in general have a higher skill floor than heavies or assaults. If someone is playing MWO as their first MW experience they're going to lack the mechanics and game knowledge required to keep it alive. 20t lights are also the most desperate for XL+ES+FF+DHS due to their extremely restricted tonnage, which makes them a much more expensive prospect than the chassis price indicates.
    They also tend to be very range-restricted. You can technically run 6xML on some, but new players will cook themselves with that.
    My personal pick for "I want a fast, small skirmishing light" for new players would be an OSR-4D. You can run 6xML or 6xSPL with an XL280 + extra DHS + 4JJ, or ditch some JJs for LAMS. You can even drop all the JJ and the extra DHS to fit a light engine. It's almost as fast and small as a 20t but can run a one-sided peek build with better range and more armor to boot. Other solid picks, as others have pointed out, are Wolfhounds and urbies.
    BSW and MAD are both solid new player options, but after you mentioned sticking to simpler weapons in the intro I'm not sure why you're recommending a UAC-favoring BSW. You *know* new players are going to spam-click the UACs and jam constantly. Something like a HBK-4G with 2x AC/5+3t ammo, 3x ML, LFE280, and full armor isn't exactly peak tier 1 meta, but it's simple and reliable, which is what new players need while learning core mechanics.

    • @AronFigaro
      @AronFigaro 5 місяців тому +1

      As someone in about the same stat bracket: I completely agree. The OSR-4D is a lot less safe than my recommendations of playing longer range skirmishers (HLL Arctic Cheetah, ERLL spider) but that and the Wolfhounds are probably the best option for getting in closer.
      I think if people really want to learn to circle and ankle bite they should probably watch b33f and play that locust.

    • @YarHarFD

      Similar player here, completely agree. Knife fighting in a 20 ton is peak skill-based gameplay. Definitely not for newbies. I started in a sniping raven 3l many years ago (still effective btw, just not as great as it used to be) and slowly moved in closer. A new player should be in something can can survive a few hits, so 30 or 35 tons is what I would recommend.

      Heavy mechs are the best class since they're designed to kill medium mechs. Equal in speed but tonnage is better. Assault designed to kill everything except light mechs. Light mechs hunt light mechs and assault who have no support. Awesome is the best IS assault since it would had in lore a 20ton scout. But awesome is still one of the better. Banshee is likely the best beginner mech with a speed of 70kph it's faster than most other assault except 80tons at 75kph. Banshee is basically a Mauler at 95ton instead of 90ton and travels a lot faster.

    I think the Piranha-2 is a terrible starter pick; Backstabbers usually need Map Knowledge to maneuver into position and get out of danger.
    You weren't even using the Loadout you said to use, with 10 Micro Pulse Lasers and 3 ER Small Lasers instead of 13 Micro Pulse Lasers, and with that armor layout newbies are likely to be back-cored by friendly fire...
    I could more agree with the Bushwacker-X2, probably because you could drop a ton of UAC-10 Ammo to fit a decent medium laser backup on the Center Torso, but you are using a Marauder-9M AS A MISSILE BOAT!
    A fracking Catapult can do the same thing, for HALF the price, and have Quirks that actually support vomiting Medium Range Missiles!

    Subscribed but I gotta disagree with the choices on some of these mechs.
    The Marauder 75t heavy is always a good choice though for any player.
    However, the Piranha in MWO is the definitive feast or famine mech. It is actually one of the most unfriendly mechs to new players whether it's played or against them.
    It requires a lot of skill to play it and knowledge of movement and maneuvering. And it's anything but survivable no matter how you build it.
    Also the Bushwhacker is awesome, however the X1 is a superior ballistics variant.
    Also I'd let new players to know that when they first start out they may want to stay away from anything with an Inner sphere XL engine in use until they get down some basics like torso twisting and cover management.
    Other than that, good to see the MwO videos increasing these days! Keep up the good work!

    I like the ctf-4x for new players. It can mount 4 x ac 5. It's good at any but the most extreme range. And you can pretty much take out most mechs just by walking at them and firing. It doesn't have ecm so it can teach some good habits like stay close to cover. It's real tanky so if you make a mistake your not punished right away. It uses autocannons so overheating isn't as much a problem. Only problems is it sucks at dealing with lights, it's slower than most heavies and it's a knuckle dragger so shooting over low cover and hilltops from the valley are a problem. You have to lead your shots. But as long as you position yourself well you should come out on top. That and you have a damage limit in the form of ammo.

    I really don't like these recommendations. The Piranhas are all VERY high skill floor mechs that require patience and good circling. The new light mech player wants to learn battle flow and escape routes, so something that can play at 400-600m and has some armor bonuses to make it more forgiving is a much better pick. I'd suggest the ACH-Prime with 2 heavy larges, a Spider 5D with 2 ERLLs, or maybe a wolfhound or a raven with 3, though a new player may find the lack of jump jets annoying.
    I definitely like your choice of medium, and the MRM vomit Marauder's not a bad pick for a heavy either, but frankly a lot of heavies will work. Anything that can play at mid range, and has good shield arms to encourage the new player to torso twist and use that torso speed is exactly what you want to teach with.
    I also agree with not putting newbies in assaults.

    HMN-PRIME (this can do all major play styles in the game very well, super flexible)
    TBR-S or TBR-BH (ECM, one of the strongest QP mechs in the game right now, also has good build variety)

  • @FLUX.2226
    @FLUX.2226 2 роки тому

    The Piranha is one of the most difficult mechs to play imo, I wouldn't recommend it to new players. I've been playing MWO for over a year now and my Piranha is among my least played mechs because I just can't seem to do well in it. It's squishy, has no ECM, no jump jets and you have to use short range weapons if you want to utilize its high number of hardpoints (which is its only redeeming feature). You can't really affect the outcome of the match unless you know what you're doing and can assassinate an assault mech early on, otherwise it's just a "win harder" mech that can only start doing things once your team has already started cleaning up the survivors.
    Personally I wouldn't recommend light mechs to new players in general, most of them are squishy so you can't make many mistakes. And it's easy to run ahead because you're fast and then get picked off because you got no support when you encounter half of the enemy team (speaking from personal experience, lol).

    • @1DerTempler
      @1DerTempler 2 роки тому

      Is there a chance you're playing the mech wrong? Having no ECM and jumps is not realy a disadvantage, because this mech is a guerilla mech.
      Against other Lights:
      You have to come from behind. Without an ECM your enemy has no warning. Aim direkt into his back and he will die instantly (always know the quirks of your prey)
      against mediums:
      no... not your prey.... they survive your attack and they are quick enough to follow you and kill you. Else, there are a lot of buildings you can use to evaside... depends on your abilitys....
      against heavys:
      Wait till they are bussy and when they get shot, do your best to shot the ass or the leg on your prey. He mostly think its from the enemy he is fighting with. Be aware of the sound of your machine guns... this might give you away and you have to run to save your skin... and... always stay close to cover...
      against assaults:
      Make sure your prey is not covered by other enemys. Come from behind and kill one leg then the other. Be aware when your prey try to get his ass close to a wall, so you can´t run around him. This marks the time you need to leave and come back later, because this pilot want you to run into the wall, where he can alpha you a bit. If the pilot can hit you into the legs while you run around him, leave, he is a lot better than you. Come back later and surprise him a lot...
      And by the way... MWO is a game where you have 12 enemys and 11 competitors, so dont await support. If you want teamplay join a unit.

      @@1DerTempler Pretty sure I'm playing it wrong, otherwise I'd have more success :D
      Your advice is probably good, but I'll still say it's not a mech for new players. It requires good map awareness, knowing when you can go in and when to abandon the flank - in other words, you need experience. Consistently getting into a good backstab position without getting spotted early is a fine line, a new player in a Piranha will either get caught and die early or be too passive and achieve nothing.

      @@FLUX.2226 Please remember your first earned mech you bought. Did you learn to play him? I know ppl that never played something different than lights and most of them are real master in it. The ability to play a special mech is not the affinity to this class, its only how long and intense you train it. Playing only a few mechs makes it hard to learn the weakness and dangerousness of the opponents mechs. I played this game since the closed beta and level up every mech by playing them. I think around 300 or 350, every meta and most of the special quirked anyway and a lot for the collection. Only by playing them you learn their real potential and their limits. You know exactly what the weak parts are and how to defend them. At the playstile you see exactly how well an enemy player knows his mech and what is awaiting you, if it comes to close combat. Buffs and nerfes are mostly less influencing than most of the ppl think. Its an advantage to have knowlege, but its not every thing in the game.
      Some ppl have the cougar-gene you need to be successful in this game. Pilots like this die in the begin of their training often, because of trying out their ideas. But when you leave them die till they begin to listen by themselves and take tips to their brains, they become monsters with the time. You need to know: Anxius ppl never get enough kills or dmg to be worth its mech weight they brought into the game. The problem this game has is that it takes a long time to master and then it bores you to death.

      @@1DerTempler I'm not sure if we're talking about the same topic right now-
      I'm not saying the Piranha is a bad mech or it's not worth learning how to play it, I'm saying that it's a bad mech for new players. A good new player mech should be able to deal damage without perfect positioning while also letting you make mistakes without instantly dying, and the Piranha does neither. The easier it is to learn your mech, the earlier you'll understand the rest of the game, and a long and frustrating journey doesn't help keeping new players interested.

    • @1DerTempler
      @1DerTempler 2 роки тому

      @@FLUX.2226 This is the point where I disagree with you. Once you recognize the mech's strengths and you can use them, it doesn't matter which mech you drive. Then you just have to learn to compensate for the disadvantages, but you have to do that with every Mech you want to drive...
      You die in every mech in seconds if you play in the wrong way. The idea a light is the badest mech to learn and to play ist not true.
      p.s. The largest problem for new players is the skill an knowledge -difference between them and experienced players when they come into the normal matchmaker-pool, especially when they are not guided by any veteran. Most of them think they come into a pool of cheaters, because they dont know a lot of important things. The whole how to skill a mech and what does it do better is undocumented by pgi. As example: If you dont know that you have to put in a lot of skillpoints for your mounted ecm in a mech in addition you wonder that everybody can see your mech nevertheless.
