As a person who's spent his entire life on Vancouver Island (almost 50 years now) I can tell you this.. There is rarely a day that passes that I don't thank the great lottery of life for being born here.. I've spent most of my spare time 4x4ing and exploring every mountain, every river valley I could reach. Hiked the West Coast Trail a few times and fought wildfires every summer for 17 years, so I got to fly in to some of the more inaccessible areas while doing that and have always been amazed by how beautiful it is here.
The Grey Whale migration in the spring / summer is a sight to behold around Bamfield, Pachena bay and Barkley Sound. Killer whales that are so chill they'll swim right past you within 20 feet as you dive or snorkel, just to get a look at you. Trust me, if you're into hiking or off-roading you will not regret taking a week or two exploring the island.
You are one lucky person, and you live a beautiful part of this World. I live in Wales, UK (its also beautiful in Wales), which is also quite mountainous and mostly green and wild, with fir tree forrests, much deciduous woodland, lotts of rivers, lakes and waterfalls. I am a mountain biker and walker in my spare time, I love where I live, and would truly love to visit your Island! Maybe one day?!?
I understand the way you feel. I was born and raised in the northern rural mastanuska -susitna Valley in Alaska. First 18 years in-between Talkeetna ( jumping off point for all Denali climbers) and Trappers-creek. Then in a few different areas of the Valley for 42 years. As kids we road the train up to Chase where friends lived off the tracks. The last wave and stop train in the USA. You just stand by the tracks and wave 😊 I've 4×4d, hiked, swam, climbed, bikes, skied, dog mushed, machined, drive truck from Homer to Endicott Island, worked in Kotzebue a lil south of Nome, used to drive to Tok, then across the Canadian border before 9-11 with just an ID to go to Laird Hot springs , then drive the 400+ miles back. I've caught 80lb salmon on a fly rod, watched the beluga whales in the cook inlet. Beach combed Katchamak Bay for 2 weeks at a boat only accessible homemade camp for our 6th grade school trip.
Just some of my memories, everything from a rain Forrest, to the frozen tundra, mountains, volcanos, glaciers and 90° weather. All in one state. I miss my home. Have been in rural Wyoming since 2018. About 100miles outside of Yellowstone. It's different, it's not home, but I thank the heavens I'm in a place where people haven't plowed it down, I have wildlife in my yard, places to 4×4, hike, fossils to find, and a badger in my field 😊 just not a city girl!!
I loved this documentary. I learned a lot about salmon, their journey, and all other species that rely upon it. I usually watch big cats, safari big species. I enjoyed this. Thank you.
Glad you liked it. A new Big Cats series coming up on Saturday
If it wasn't for all the lil species the big ones and us wouldn't be alive. I was born, raised lived 42 years in Alaska. Everything depends on the salmon runs.. the ripple effect when they are low is horrible, troubling. From people to the smallest birds, plants trees, you name it.. we are all connected, when we lose one species it really does affect us all!
Best doc I've seen on Vancouver Island. Amazingly accurate. But how they managed to get so many shots without showing any clear-cut logging blocks is a special talent!
Considering 99% of the ancient forests there have been logged at some point and "managed" by profiteers, it is definitely a very glossy depiction of these pillaged lands
I live on the mainland BC. I'm convinced it's the most beauitful place on earth. This documentary definitely supports that
I loved the documentary on Vancouver Island's wild beauty! It was captivating to see the wildlife and landscapes. The interdependence of species, like the salmon's journey, was amazing. It reminded me of my nature adventures and I appreciated your family connection to the island. Thanks for sharing this inspiring look at nature.
Im so grateful that I found this channel. I absolutely love the very high-quality production of these documentaries. ❤️🙏
I live a few dozen miles south in the Evergreen State. The picturesque views of Vancouver Island, as seen from the Olympic peninsula across the strait of Juan de Fuca is a sight to behold.
As someone who is from Florida I never thought I’d like a place that gets cold (relatively speaking), but the PNW is one of those natural gems that had to be experienced in order to be appreciated. It is an acquired taste, speaking about the overcast winter skies.
Great and awesome documentary!
My Father was Born on This Island,, brought Us Up To KNOW & RESPECT IT & IT's Nature, before We were Taken to Canada's Far North...
That bald eagle shot gave my goosebumps goosebumps 👏 y’all are the best

Thank you for this!❤❤ I subscribed. My family and I live on Vancouver Island. We love to explore and are always hiking. We live on Shawnigan lake very close to the outback. There is an Ancient forest on Koksilah river not far from our place; tourists don't know about it so we are often the only ones there. Peaceful. We love the wildlife and yes we do have a large black bear population but no Grizzlies. Wildlife photography is my hobby and I have thousands of pics. Next to Alaska we have a large gathering of Bald Eagles when the Salmon run. I'm thrilled when the Sea lions return for Salmon or Herring. I must say the Southern Resident Killer Whales-is endangered, with only 73 whales remaining in the population. Scientists are trying to figure it out. sigh! The ocean, mountains and waterfalls and lakes and the evergreen forest. I'm grateful every day to have this as our home!
Look it up, Grizzlies are sometimes spotted on Vancouver Island. Not to be disagreeable, just so you're aware it can happen. They swim there and with salmon there and woods, everything they could want, don't be surprised if some show up and stay. Often young males disperse from their home habitat in search of new homes where they don't have to compete with the alpha bears in their home territories.
Better to be prepared, than surprised by one. Stay safe 😊
Look it up, Grizzlies can show up there. Better to be prepared and be safe than surprised by one you don't expect to see. ❤ Take care.
Lucky you! My sister lives in the area so I e been to visit - spectacular for sure. Also, welcome new subscriber 😊 really lovely people here.

Great Victorian green houses! Years ago the NY Historical Society won the job of reconstructing the glass greenhouse at the Bronx Botanic Gardens. We made a mold and cast each piece of metal in a composite fiberglass form and reconstructed it from the floor up. It’s a magnificent structure. Prior to that I also helped redesign the enclosures at the historic reptile house at the Staten Island Zoo, another NYC landmark. Good luck with the fish, you must have a huge staff taking care of all your animals.
❤ thr documentary
This is incredible! Also if anyone is curious or knows the English voice but can't place it, it is Paul McGann, known for being the 8th doctor, Alien 3, Queen of the damned and more.
Thank you and the name of the narrator can also be found in the credits roll at the end of
Theyre all Attenborough to me
@@FreeDocumentaryNature Thank you, I saw. This is more for people like me who either get distracted by it early on, or don't watch the credits.
I'm just watching and hearing
One Must Respect The Salmon, & The Plan Mother Nature Gave Them,, Not Only to feed Humanity, but to feed the Wolves & Bears, that fed upon them & left their Nutrients to feed the Tree's of The Great Bear Rainforest < That enabled Those Magnificent Trees to become Part of OUR.OUR EARTH'S LUNGS, SO THAT OUR SPECIES AS HUMAN'S CAN BREATH !! ~~ We ALL ARE SYMBIODIC !!
I did not expect to see a cut of a bear literally forcing eggs out of a salmon. That was absolutely incredible
Black bears are cool!
😢 For the salmon fish...
This world, as magnificent as it seems or appears, is truly too sad. Harsh - my feelings. There is an emotion called Harsh. Harshness in the life of a salmon. They looked as if they fought a long war, and in the end died, all broken and torn.
Deep connection to me is when you protect something and not to use something , Deep connection is when you give back .

All Wildlife is Symbiotic IN Mother Nature,, Sad to Say, Some Human Beings, are NOT Aware of that !! We too as Human Beings are Symbiotic, but Unfortunately We HAVE NOT SEEMED TO HAVE LEARNED THAT
Sadly, 99% of Vancouver Island had been logged and replaced with monoculture tree farm forests. 😮💨 Greed really is the most deadly of all mental illness.
serious and makes people do the most horrendous awful things
I fully agree 👍
Yes, greed, vanity and a God complex. Nature is #1 no matter how much damage we do. We can not stop the weather, the water, the fires, evolution of the earth's species. some may be extinct at our hands, the earth will recover. Most likely with out us. It has changed over and over for millions of years, humans are just a destructive species here for a moment in earths history and we have failed miserably. I hope which ever species replaces us has more intelligence, respect and humbleness to nature and this great blue ball that keeps us alive!
@@FreeDocumentaryNature💯 agreed, vanity and God complex
