    I normally don’t post comments on videos, but I had to for this one.
    Let me start off by saying that I’m a native New Yorker who moved out of state for a job a few years back and has missed NY ever since. I still visit the city a lot, and one of my favorite things to do is ride the subway.
    I grew up in Flatbush on the 2/5 line and D/Q (now B/Q) Brighton lines. I came very close to wanting to be a train conductor because I was obsessed with the subway. I consider myself very lucky to be able to call NYC home, and know as much as I do about one of the biggest transit systems in the world.
    Now, I can count on one hand the amount of times I’ve taken the 7 train, so I didn’t know what to expect from this video. But this video makes me want to take the 7 on my next trip to the city, just for the experience. This video just does everything right!
    Here were my highlights/thoughts.
    1. The propulsion systems on these R188s are ridiculous in every right way.
    2. The newest section of tunnel between 34 street and Times Sq sounds so good. It’s like low howling sound almost. Very similar to the 2nd Ave subway.
    3. Coming into Times Square, the 7 really makes a statement. All those rail gap sounds are something else. I was like “alright drama queen” 😆.
    4. Speaking of the rail gaps, did I mention that this line has some really ridiculous rail gaps sounds?? My favorites were arriving into Times Square, on the straight section before Court Square, the lead up into 33rd, and the whole express run. One thing is railfans love.. a good rail gap sound 😂
    5. After QBP, it gets real. I would imagine that this has to be one of the fastest express runs in the system; Especially with CBTC. The camera must be on there solid, because I swear the train was about to break the sound barrier 😂 (between 90th and Junction Blvd & pulling into 61street especially).
    6. Now I can see what some of the “hype” is with the 7. I like how for most of the first half of the video, the amount of trains headed back to Hudson Yards is incredible. It seemed like they were meeting each other at every station until the express run.
    GREAT Video! 10/10.
    Now if you’ll excuse me, I’ll go back to only reading the comment section 🙃

      It is truly an honor to read such a heart warming comment like this one; for a number of reasons. We are pleased that this video was able to bring you back to a place you are blessed to call home. As a NYC native, you have a respect and love for the subway that it is ok if others don't relate; NYC is underground after all. Had you been successful at becoming a conductor, it would have been an honor for you to have given your service to NYC.
      As for the 7 train, thank you so much for the detailed reply as you pointed out a number of different factors. With that, you can now look forward to enjoying the 7 experience in real life, as we are sure you will keep that promise to yourself. Thank you so much for this comment and for your video review. We look forward to earning your support and we can't wait until another video is worthy of another one of your warming comments. 🫡

    As the 7 train stopped at Court Square and Queensboro Plaza you can see how Long Island City changed within the last 15 to 20 years. The last time I traveled to LIC in 2007 many of the commercial and residential buildings in that neighborhood were either under construction or had their first tenants moving in.

    • @wtaenyc
      @wtaenyc  2 роки тому +13

      This goes to show how much work the city has done/is doing, to help improve the infrastructure and modernize the area of LIC; it is truly an amazing area of Queens. It'll be fun to see what the next 15-20 years will look like.

    • @mariotorres6287

      And I recall Long Island City in the 1970s. I attended Aviation High School at the 33rd Street/Rawson station, graduated in 1972. Later, I had a Local trucking job which included Long Island City on my route. Back then, LIC still had a manufacuring component in its economy. Swingline, the staple manufacturer, on Skillman Avenue was one of my customers. It's the building you see on the left just before the 33rd St station with the Capital One sign. Eagle Electric had various plants near Queensboro Plaza. The gum manufacturer Certs and Wrigley Chewing Gum was on Thomson Avenue. Breyers Ice Cream had a plant across the street and a little down from my high school. Equitable Bag Company occupied the corner of Van Dam Street and Thomson Avenues in a large building, now occupied by LaGuardia College. Yes, the change from manufacturing, which provided good paying, middle-income jobs, is dramatic.

    My "maiden voyage" on the New York Subway began with this train in the summer of 1965. I went on a family trip to the Worlds Fair at Willets Point. I rode on the blue and cream cars that ultimately became the Redbirds. Then along came the R-62's and then the R-142's and probably a few R-188's as well. This train route also began a love affair with the subway. On the back of my 7 t-shirt, it has the name International Express in different languages because of the many ethnic people who ride this line. At the bottom of the shirt, I wrote this item: the Redbirds' last stand: 1963-2003. Thanks for adding this line to your list. It brought back a lot of memories for a Pittsburgh kid who grew up riding streetcars, got his first taste of a subway, and has been addicted ever since!

Just like your first one with the A Train from the Rockaways to 207 Street, this video brought back a lot of memories of the 7 line from my first ride in '65 to the present day. The redbirds got a new lease on life after a major rebuilding program along with the R-32 brightliners. I hated to see them go, but they will always be a part of my memories for years to come. Thanks so much for your comments. Keep up the good work!!!

    Wow.... So much has changed since I last visited since idk 09 or 10, by train to visit family there. I used to live in Queens, moved from there to Brooklyn like in 1999 or 2000 then to the Bronx like 2001. Court SQ to Queensboro Plaza took me by surprise, all those large buildings weren't there but wow, the progress from these past few years. Freaking hell, Flushing has more markets than ever before. I remember Circuit City (I think) back in 1998-2000 being in a big building after getting out of the station sheesh.
    This was a nice trip of nostalgia, to see my old City have these tall buildings and markets, the old train line I used to ride from 111th st to Corona Plaza, Junction Blvd to Grand Central, Times Square or even to Flushing st, ever since I was just a kid. God I miss the old red train too. Forgot how beautiful it looks during the night riding a train. I gotta find time to go there, visit my old home.

    Great videos which we need with the loss of the rail fan window with the new equipment. Thank you. The roar on the curve leaving Hudson may be due to the raised ties under the rails amplifying and changing the usual squeal sound. It's so annoying to me that I cover my ears until we pass. The kink in the northbound track after Grand Central may be due to how the river tube was constructed. I believe they constructed from both ends segment by segment and they didn't quite match up when they met. Amazing what they did back then. With the CBTC I notice the signal stays red after the train leaves the station even if it's clear ahead and clears to blinking green when a following train approaches. I find the 7 runs much smoother with CBTC and without the annoying timers. Thanks to Andy Byford for putting still in place a system to straighten out and speed up the system.

    Woo Hoo, looks like I was wrong about this channel! Glad to you back with another amazing video! Ok so question - does anyone know why the right turn out of 34th street is so loud & doesn't sound like most other turns in the MTA system? Did they use special tracks or something? I'm not able to figure it out. : / These videos not only show a great clear view of the tunnels but the crazy amount of trash on the trackways. The MTA should really clean the tracks better & maybe also have people on the platform fining those that throw trash on the tracks. Next question - does anyone know how that kink in the tunnel 8:04 from Manhattan to Queens got there? I know it's always been there; I remember it even when I was young back in the 80's & 90's. Guess it couldn't be fixed when they did the Steinway tunnels several years ago. Was it only me or did it seem like the operator was going kind of slow, especially since the train usually drives itself on CBTC? Can the T/O tell CBTC to go slower, looks like he can. Love the way the express goes down the hill from 62nd Street to 61st, much better than when regular signals were in effect. Ok last item - What was up with the tower at Main Street? Did they have a newbie operating the switches? After the local crossed over they could have let the express & local in at the same time since the center & right tracks were free, but instead crossed the express in front of the local. Anyways, great video! Can't wait for the next!

      Wow. What an amazing comment with loads of important questions. We hope that some of our train fans can help answer them so we will pin this comment so that folks can chime in. We can only answer the ones that we are certain about as we would hate to share wrong information. We are happy that you can appreciate these videos which in turn helps you appreciate the tunnels and the infrastructure of the system. The folks that were/are apart of making this possible are strictly geniuses and we tip our hats off to them. As for the trash, we can agree that the NYCT can do a better job at cleaning up but we personally think that they can start by having more trash receptacles on the platforms, so that people won’t be inclined to throw their trash on the tracks. The less folks throw the trash onto the tracks the less messy the system becomes which means the less work NYCT has to do to keep it clean. As for the CBTC question. The train operator is not in control of how fast the CBTC system operates but should they decide to “take over,” then they have full control over the speed. We aren’t sure why they were going that speed so we can only be thankful that everything Werner smoothly and there wasn’t any major issues. As for the tower operator, we have no idea why they decided to bring the express across the local either. We can only assume that they made the best decision given their circumstances and assume that they had their own reasons for doing it the way they did. Because we don’t know their reason, we can’t judge them. We are on the outside looking in and we are certain that they are simply doing their best given that their job is already a task; ensuring that the trains continue to run smoothly. Great observation btw and great questions. We hope we continue to earn your respect and we are sorry you missed us.

      Hello, here to answer your questions.
      1. The noise is causes by the flanges or the part of the wheel that allows the train to be stabilized when its turning
      2. The Kink there is from construction back then most likely during construction or maintenance., Maybe an error but it most likely happened in the 20th Century.
      3. CBTC goes slow for a variety of reasons. Construction on a nearby track, A Train that isn't properly far enough, Rain/Snow and other factors as well. This is most likely due to the 2nd reason where there is train traffic so maybe that is why. CBTC is computerized signaling tech so systems like that work together for safety reasons.
      4. The T/O can't "tell" the CBTC to go slower, but they can take control of the train. T/O's are there for safety reasons ! So in the event that they need to take control of the train to their control instead of CBTC, they can do that.
      5. That's because of the CBTC and how its programmed, not due to Switch Controllers.

    • @jimneutron157
      @jimneutron157 2 роки тому

      @@zycklacon9588 Thanks for the reply.
      1. Yeah, I get that the flanges stabilize the train but if you listen to it in this video, it doesn't sound the same (It's a loud roaring sound) as when the train makes the S curve from Times Square to 5th Ave (Normal screeching sound). I did notice that there is no "Keeper rail" in place, the extra rail to keep trains from derailing. Strange that it's not on a turn that sharp. There is definitely something different about the tracks right after you leave Hudson Yards.
      2. That kink has been there forever. I just want to see if anyone knew of its origins. You would think they would try to fix it.
      3 & 4. It seemed strange that train was going slower than usual. There were no workers seen plus they aren't allowed to work on elevated lines at night, correct? But I did notice many of the home ball signals were red until the train approached. I don't fully understand CBTC but what I have seen in the past, mainly on the L line, signals are always blinking green. It was different on the 7 that night.
      5. Same as 3 & 4 I've been on the 7 express a lot going into Main St even with a local & it seemed like the middle track was off limits. I was thinking maybe the tracks may have been controlled manually for training purposes in case of CBTC outage. Seemed odd.
      Thanks for the reply again @Zycklacon!

    • @arthasmenethil89
      @arthasmenethil89 2 роки тому +4

      @@jimneutron157 To address your question about the sound-- if it's in the "newer" track sections constructed in the last 10 years, the louder roaring sound I believe has to do with the sound dampening materials used to insulate the underground tunnels from the surrounding property. The best example of this is on the 2nd Ave portions of the Q, north of 57/7 and especially after 61/Lex where it is all brand new construction. Until I heard this roar on the 7 near times sq and Hudson yds I thought it was just special construction materials to keep the upper east siders happy.
      And my understanding of CBTC is that it's just like any other cab signaling that will give a slow speed to maintain safe distance from a block or switch that isn't open or set, respectively, and gradually slows on a smooth deceleration curve as the computer is calculating most efficient speed for the conditions ahead (even if the nearer visible signals are green). This is apparent a few times in the video and most exaggerated at the very end approaching the red at Flushing main. CBTC in reality creates virtual blocks around the moving subway superimposed on the "legacy" fixed blocks which together dictates the allowed cab speed.

    なかなか見ることができない、ニューヨークの地下鉄前面展望動画の投稿ありがとうございます。
    レトロな感じのトンネルから地上区間の走行など、バラエティに富んだ走行風景だったと思います。
    ニューヨークの地下鉄といえば、24時間運行でダイヤはないとされ、トンネルを走り回るネズミが列車の到着を教えてくれるという話を良く聞いたことがありますが、動画の9.28付近で列車がホームに到着した後にネズミがホームに向かっているシーンがあります。
    おそらく、このネズミたちがホームの乗客に列車の接近を知らせたかもしれませんね(笑)。
    「ネズミの尾まで錐(きり)の鞘(さや)」という、どんな下らないものでも役に立つという意味の日本のことわざがありますが、もしネズミが列車の接近を知らせてくれたならば、下らなくちっぽけな話でもネズミが役に立つ行動をしてくれたということですね(笑)。
    今後の動画も、楽しみに待っています。

      ひどいですね。
      そうなると、ネズミたちは列車の接近を知らせているのではなく、私たちに「ゴミを捨てるな!ゴミは、ゴミ箱に捨てなさい!」と、ネズミだけにそのように”チュー告(忠告)”しているのかもしれませんね(笑)。

    I was thinking it would be cool to add video on each stop while the doors open and close. Getting a camera mounted outside would be difficult and probably completely illegal, but barring that, just putting clips of the inside view of a car at each stop would be cool. Train stops. switch to inside view, doors close, switch to outside view. It wouldn't be necessary to do this all at once. You can ride the train at anytime of day that matched the original trip view and then just splice the inside views into the larger trip. I doubt any one would notice, but someone might, but big deal.
