Good video. I've got a 33kwh diesel and 3,000 gallons of fuel. I bought fuel in the 90's and paid $0.62 a gallon for off road. I treated it with PRI-D. I also have about 60kwh worth of battery power in my basement and a Trace 5548 inverter and a Trace step up transformer for my well pump, and a Whisper 3000 wind gen on an 84' tower. I have an ALL electric house to include baseboard heat. I need every KW I can get in the winter time in northern Wisconsin. My inverter exercises my gen set monthly.
Good video Brother. I am not crazy about the 3600 rpm generators. By no means am I putting this down most folks are cought off gaurd by power outages..
Does the controller have integrated undervoltage sensing? I assume that is what the generator uses to autostart. It is a nice set up for sure. 20 kW is a little large for typical household needs, but it would be nice to have! Thanks for the video
Was cost the reason you installed an air cooled generator? Its better than nothing and better than the ge_e_ac, but why not go liquid cooled 1800 rpm? Some of the motorhome diesel generators from Onan are in the 7-10kw size range and are made to be used a lot. Dont let the power company see you running the feeders back through the meter pan, they usually frown on that.
Actually, we didn't splice. Ran new wires from the load side to the transfer switch. It was a lot cleaner. Not including Propane, it was $6k installed, tested and certified for the 20kW unit.
If it's 3600 RPM air cooled gen (typically less than $5k) then it'll do if the power goes out infrequently for no more than a few hours. If the power goes out for a week or more these stand-by's get worn out in a big hurry and may not last through the outage. If you want quality that lasts under load you need water cooled 1800 RPM unit (which costs around $11k).
Can you fit a drip pan under the oil filter? Also, I think 5-7k is perfect for "preparedness" reasons for a modest house. It's enough to run one furnace, fridge, freezer and a bit more.
Yeah, it depends what feel you need to run. I think anything over 7k is overshoot, but you wouldn't want more than one appliance starting at s time if you have much less than 4.5k. Motors and compressors need adequate current to start and run without overheating [from low voltage].
We'll at 6 k I will be looking to upgrade . I do agree with you as far as generators onan is one of the best I rate it higher than honda . I have one from the early 70's that runes like new
I assume you spliced the load side (from house) in the meter panel to reach the transfer switch connection ? what was the total cost (around) for this system ?
ive installed over 200 genrac gens and a v12 cats but never a onan , i wonder if us carbs makes a multi fuel kit for them.what brand is the transfer switch i like it thank you
Ok have to put this out there, IF A BULLET HITS THE TANK IT WILL NOT EXPLODE IT WILL JUST LEAK OUT THE PROPANE. Is that clear, if you than shoot a tracer round than it will go boom. Thought all the smart people should know that. Later
Quick question. I have a Onan 4 kw generator in a old camper that has not been started in about 6 or 7 years. What would you do to the generator (maintenance wise), before starting it up for the first time? Prior to parking the RV, it and the gen were kept in excellent running order. I would like to use this gen to set up and use for backup power in an off grid house.
Hello Enginner775, how are you? My name is Cristian de Argentina. I would ask you to put the subtitles in Spanish if you can because your videos are very interesting and I do not understand anything you say. As long as it's not too much trouble, I'd appreciate it a lot. Greetings and thank you very much! Cristian from Argentine

How's this setup running today?
I certainly respect Cummings-Onan products. That looked like a nice set up as well. Thanks for sharing what your doing, we all learn something.

I’d like you to come install one just like that at my house.

Not a big 3600 rpm person I run a 1800 rpm onan right now 4k . Looking for a DJC 15 K
Agreed

Hello: Looks like nice unit, good info. If you built a new house would you go with gas furnace, cook stove and water heater. Have a Good One
What gauge wire did you use from the generator to the transfer switch?

How's this genset holding up today?
How did you get around changing the SEC to 4 conductor to the panel. I didn't see any water pipe or made electrodes either.
What type of comunication wire do you use ? And can you run it on the same feeder conduit?
Nice, will that gererator run all the utilities in the house?
I have a fault system failure , saying charger ac fail . Battery reads 13.2 at resting and 13.8 while running . Is my battery bad or something else
That is a very well build generator, nice video. How much does something like that cost? Wayne

depends on load. Interesting question to get answered.

very nice pro job bro, N that's a good deal for a 20kw turn key job thanks
Whats the part number for the remote cable?
will it work with a gasefier
AWESOME set....thanks for the vid.
How many gallons per hour does it use?
That propane line looks small in diameter and flimsy?
If I was installing a tank like that, I would have a concrete wall around it just in case a stray bullet came my way.
Ok have to put this out there, IF A BULLET HITS THE TANK IT WILL NOT EXPLODE IT WILL JUST LEAK OUT THE PROPANE.

Good work m8
good info ....
Not for sure but that looks like an air cooled 3600 RPM Genset.
It is. Stay away from those. 1800 rpm is the only way to go imo.

20kw is big
Quiet? I guess as far as generators go. But my wind generator is still much quieter. Lol
I want something like that, that runs on hydrogen
I would get a smaller unit. Running the entire house during a power outage would be very expensive.
Not the quietest thing is it
Anyone well-read with the Bible will find "Cummins-Onan" an extremely ironic name. :)
I run 7000 watts and it handle mostly every thing in house. You just have to reasonable of what you run at one time. just use common sense
must be nce
5:31 I would strongly disagree.
