  • In the last video we gave you a little tour of the Italian plant nursery. This time we're back on our property digging holes and planting trees. In addition I explain how I came up with the orchard design (also known as permaculture design or food forest). It will be especially useful for those in the Mediterranean climate (if you have hot summers and mild winters). Enjoy! And let me know if you need more details or a clarification and I will respond.

Very nice. Where are you? You’re planting all the same trees I want to try on my farm in Southern Utah. I’m in Zone 8a.

I'm in central Italy in Zone 9a. You should be able to plant the same trees. Just in case, ask in a nursery for varieties compatible with your Zone. They will know for sure.

    Thanks for the video!!
You mentioned you grow herbs with the olive trees. Which herbs do you recommend?

Thank you for the comment! Lavender, sage, rosemary, oregano, thyme, basil or to boost the olives with nitrogen, peanuts, chickpeas, beans. Many people have success growing asparagus under olive trees as a cash crop. But you can plant different things like artichoke or nitrogen fixing berries like autumn olive, goumi berry etc.

why shouldn't you do swales on slopes steeper than 18º?

I believe that’s when you move to terracing, but I could be wrong.

@@norcalgal6785 yeah, just saw another video on this channel saying you need permenant forest to decrease erosion and stableise the soil or terrace it.
      thank you

Yes precisely, such slopes aren't stable. Swales on such slope may cause land slides. Benches and terraces would be fantastic though for steep slopes. Soon I will do a comprehensive video on swales and list do's and don'ts.

Hello, I have seen your great project and we can collaborate in every way, I am part of an agroforestry team in Andalusia with more than 25 projects around the Sierra de Ronda and the Sierra de Grazalema. We would like to help you retain more water, make it much more profitable, create better soil faster, create nearby employment. All this is possible thanks to the creation of Dynamic Edible Forests. We will advise you by choosing the key species, their location, their temporal succession, the time to prune, why it is done this way and the best way to do it, creating ditches following contour lines. .. being in turn 250% to 1000% more profitable per hectare than an average crop, if you are interested respond to this comment with a way to communicate and show you our work!! We want to participate in your path, without economic interests. Thanks anyway!!!!, Mena.
