      Nothing to fear. I used a real drill with the two bits (no patience since birth), working slooowly, while my Lovely Assistant vacuumed. Reminds me of the old joke: No one ever needs a drill bit... What you need is a hole

    Hey... wanted to let you know - 2.5 years in - this video is still doing some good. You just helped me get some great shots and video at a music fest that I would have missed otherwise... sadly I slipped and fell in a creek a few weeks back and while I thought I saved the camera from serious water damage, I discovered a dried water spot a few days later that made the camera unusable... was stumped on what to do and found your video...
    One thing not obvious in the video (but obvious in hindisght) - there's a second lens inside the camera - and I missed cleaning it the first time and only cleaned top/surface lens.
    Anyhow, thanks for sharing.

      Yup. The lower lens you can clean the top of if your careful. But if there is anything below that your Shit out of luck as far as I’ve been able to tell. So glad it was helpful!

    After finding dust INSIDE my lens, Googled "Canon GX7 dust inside lens" and this popped up. Genius! Just got through doing it and now my lens is dust-free. Two hints: Find a small flashlight of the approximate right size, remove the plastic or glass lens, use it to press down on the lens blades (scotch-tape it in place temporarily) while you do this (any round flat item would do... Does anyone have a 50 cent piece anymore? That'd probably work just as well). Also: have A Lovely Assistant (or the equivalent) be the third hand with the vacuum,

    Very creative way of lens cleaning. Cost me 50 bucks to have someone dissemble the whole camera to clean inner side of the lens. It was a different camera, but I think your method would also work. Thumbs up.

    wow this is so clever. the older G3, g4, g5, g6, g7, g8, g9, g10 cameras had a metal lens tube that one could attach filters to and they protected the zoom lens from dust as well as impact damage. only down side is they make the camera more bulky. one could probably buy an old g10 lens tube and dremle it out to fit, but it would cover up the aperature ring! wish this camera was designed better!

    Hi Matt. First Sorry for my english. I am from Argentina. My canon was very duster or dusty and also have a horrible small but strong black dot in a video, specially with blue sky and white backgrounds. Today I decided for the hole and drill solution, I saw your video. I was scary but work, I can do it and I clean the inside lens. Now is very clean, like a new camera, BUUUT the black dot continue at the same place.
    Why? How is it possible? Is on the sensor camera this black point or dot? In wich part of the camera it is? If it the sensor... how can I clean? Regards. Sorry but for me this u$s 600 was a hard investiment for improve bettet quality video for my blog and the camera it is impossible to use with this problem. I bought because many youtubers recommend. If you can look in the front lense sometimes you can see where there is a mechanism that operates the extension of the lens. Try at your own risk. I drilled a super tiny hole first and inspected

    • @simply2cheesy706
      @simply2cheesy706 5 років тому

But after coming across your video, I’d thought to give it a go. As you mentioned, I want to proceed with caution. But I’m staying positive! I’d looked at it closely and hope the lx10/15 also has a sheath lens cover like the G7x.

    Fantastic video, extremely helpful, I purchased a used G7X and discovered soo much dust, I am a 60 year old female and braved drilling the holes (purchased new sharp drill bits for it), I did use cordless drill carefully, that was the easy bit, all done and spotlessly clean now thanks to Matt. The top 2 fins each side came off with the cover despite being careful and the cover was a struggle to get off initially too, but with patience the fins all back in place too, actually my daughter did that bit - she has more patience and finer fingers for that fiddly bit. Took the metal cap off, and just gave all the exposed holes and openings a good vacuuming. oooh no... well get drilling. I get what you mean, but if you are lookin g for a powerful pocket camera... thats what you have to deal with. Otherwise you have to choose between a phone or detachable lenses.

    Thanks for sharing! I do have one concern though. Wouldn't this make it easier for the dust to get in now that we have two large holes? I mean even if the cap is covering the holes, I'm guessing that you'll still get more in there than before

    • @JaYoeNation
      @JaYoeNation  7 років тому +2

      no... i have used this technique for quite some time now.. and i dont see any more dust getting back there than was happening before.. its a very snug cover.

    The drilling part terrifies me! If something goes wrong with the camera after the holes are drilled, doesn't that void my warranty (since I've made alterations?) ? I love the difference!

    • @JaYoeNation
      @JaYoeNation  7 років тому +4

      yea.. but the problem is that canon offers no warranty fix if the inside area is dirty... the image was getting so bad i didnt want to use the camera either way.... I had to do it. Actually it is a great solution if you take your time and are really careful.

      Hope my fix helps you breathe some life into your G7X... just make sure you have some nice sharp drill bits and watch just before they pull thru... sometimes they bite onto the plastic and twist in. But if your slow and take your time wit ha good vacuum it makes them totally serviceable!

    Is it possible to do this with a Canon Powershot SX160 is? I live in the Caribbean so the sand and dust is a real problem for me when I'm trying to take shots and I do not want to dole out the ridiculous fee that Canon is going to charge me to simply clean my lens. I also definitely do NOT want to replace my camera. She's ole faithful, the first camera I ever got, a birthday present from my mom. I'd rather learn how to maintain it because aside from a little dust in the lens, she works just fine.

    I am considering to buy a "pocket" digital camera. I 've already have a Canon DSLR 6D. But it is too heavy for me when travelling, especially the huge lens(24-105 or 70-200mm)...Could you please tell me is G7x good enough to use when I am getting out? Did you drill it by just constantly rotating the bit against the surface by hand or used a dremel / drilling machine ? I am guessing by hand else you would have mentioned and the speed of the machine might just shake things up the wrong way IMO
