the yamaha xs650 has gone through two electronic ignition failures. i think the heat accumulates and throws off the hall effect thingie. the sensor is up by the head where it DOES warm up. converted my sporty to points and am liking it. i'm an old guy, and i don't need high performance; just want to get home.
It's good to see a professional working on electrical problems for a change and to see how they work through the problems ! - Electrical problems often seem to be frustrating to solve (especially the dreaded 'intermittent fault'..) and electrics probably aren't seen as being as 'glamorous' as engine/chassis work by most UA-cam channels, but every bike has to have 'em !.. I prefer a Mag or points and coil ignition too - I bought a rough, but low mileage, US import 1970 Commando some years back, I ran it as my daily, all-year-round transport - it still had its original factory fitted points and coils, I cleaned and set the points ONCE when I first got it and I honestly never had to look at them again.. and I ran that bike daily without any problems for 11 years..
Had my 1970 Royal star since 1982. Had no problems with points in apart from dodgy condensers. Fitted Bower Branson kit in late 80's & never had a problem. I like points better though. Just had a nightmare with M y XT500 which has had a 12v & CDI upgrade kit fitted. The source coil packed up 183 miles from my house last friday. Carole Nash recovery were a bunch of fibbers.
I'm with you, I've spent my working life designing electronic circuits but out on the road there's little can be done except that phone call. Give me points or a mag anytime.
I found my A65 worked best on a Lucas RITA. At high revs the points would bounce but the RITA stayed rock steady and it had a much more progressive advance. The wights on the A-R would go in a step at around 3000 rpm whereas the RITA curve ran all the way to 5000.
I live with points on my vintage motorcycles while my newer ones have electronic ignition. I have had electronic ignitions out last the motorcycle they were attached to.
Electronic can be and usually are reliable. The problem is that when it fails, it fails completely, with roadside fixes likely impossible. Points give warning of failure and can be jury-rigged to get you home. What's more, as car enthusiasts have discovered, point ignitions provide a hotter spark than, say, HEI systems. (See Car Craft magazine, Point vs. Electronic Ignitions dyno tests.)
Hi Paul, really feel for you with both bikes giving ign. problems during a weekend. As you know already I'm not a fan of points, too many moving parts prone to wear. In America you can't get good parts for them, like points itself, plates ( in a case of A65 6 CA would be beneficial ), springs for the advance mechanism and a new stuff is mostly junk, old worn out to the bone.. I don't know if you realize Pazon has a 7 years warranty for their boxes, so I hope you can probably exchange your faulty box for a new one. This is strange, their boxes have a decent opinion between owners. From another point of view you are a luckiest guy with your Cub working well for decades with it's loom in a real sorry state. Looked exactly like my first A65 loom when bought in 2006. :)
My A65 ran perfectly on traditional points. I found NGK plugs better than Champions though but they may have improved by now. Who knows? Sadly I don't have the bike anymore.
Another good video of real life fettling. What's the old mower behind? Reminds me of the ones used by the council when I lived in Pennar as a little lad in the late 1950's.
At around the 4 in. Mark, after putting a new sparking plug in, you stated that it was not the right size . Did you mean "Reach size" or Heat Range 'size' " ?
hi Paul i would put 6ca points in it with a 12 degree advance retard unit instead of the 4ca and 11 degree cam they are renowned for a rogue spark and damaging con rods 6ca set up it allows you to set the points individually for each cylinder and the condensers are set out of the way near the ignition coils in a rack, the 12 degree cam lob is not as harsh as the 11 degree cam. but anyway its running and like you said it would of got you home even on one cylinder anyway take care Paul great vid who needs modern tech
Thanks - as it happens the ATU is marked 12 degrees. That backplate was all I could find in my collection of cast off bits from customer machines, so on it went. Two new sets of Tiger Cub points went on, though, but the coils, condensers etc are all old, used stuff.
Well l get the 'home fix' advantage over other systems but thousands of modern vehicles seem to get along fine. I think its that setting/renewing points is a generationally learned procedure and that aftermarket/remanufactured condensers seem to have a poor reputation.
Not saying it is the case in this instance, but it makes no sense to rebuild and polish bikes.,spending vast ammounts of cash in the process, yet not attending to the wiring set up.A new loom ican be made at small firms inexpensively. Clearly a sophisticated electronic system will not tolerate inadequacies for long.,whereas a points system will. I think if we treated our house electrics the same way these old bikes we too would be fried by now. I converted my old BMW R 75/7 ex Metropolitan police machine to electronic back in the 70s and it never let me down in 5 years and over 50,000 miles..
Sad is the new happy with points when all is well. It just feels right. Take your time, choose the right springs for your auto advance, face your points, check condensers and all is well, you're in the zone..
Ive always stuck with points for many reasons. Dont change what aint broke.
The stock electronic ignition is still working after 25 years on my Sportster 1999 883.

You can’t honestly think that’s better than a Boyer. All that faffing and kicking. A Boyer system with a double ended coil correctly wired, job done.
Once I have set it up, it will work fine without suddenly frying and leaving me stranded. Electronic is fine until that happens - and it does.
Well when it works and u can keep it workin right. No need for any other system.
Good work
Bloody good deductive logic there sounds great well done mate...
Bloody lovely! I've a soft spot for the BSA twins!
Boy does she sound great when she's on two real classy ! Alan Northern Ireland 👍
Old school, best school.
cant keep a good man down for long
That's exactly where I have my coils mounted also.
G'day from Australia, great job well done, sometimes it's better with old tricks and leave the new one's in the box, cheers mate, ride safe, Neil 🤠.

brilliant job paul. happy man !!😊🎶👍
Great stuff Paul!
Good to see your attitude to solve a problem. I would suggest testing coils etc. before adding them to the stash ;-)
Thanks. Do you know, the only 'duff' coil I have had was one brand new one, which didn't work ...
@@paulhenshaw4514Yes,the only coil problem I've had was with a new one as well. I've replaced it with an old one in my stash and so far so good.
You did it again Paul. 🎉. Perseverance pays off and it sounds great. Cheers to you and to points ignition. Dan 👍🇨🇦
You've made your 'point' mate!!
Bravo!

Just checked and set the timing by strobe and this one is advancing smoothly and correctly.
Good result. 4CA are not the easiest for numb fingers, but I never had any real trouble with them.
Great job, well done😊
Great Paul firing on Two ..
Back to the future.

Good work! and you did not have to do it on the side of the road at night in rain. :)
great job paul and she sounds great, any update on those dimensions on the wassell air box cheers mick.
Excellent 👍👌👏

Hi David, that is an old Allen Scythe - my son has a couple and we have footage of them running coming soon.
@@paulhenshaw4514 . Thanks Paul. I'll look forward to seeing that. 👍👍
Wasn´t it the points that killed bsas reputetion back then? Like holing pistons and stuff?
Probably muppets who didn't know how to set them up ..
@@paulhenshaw4514 No it was a fail from Lucas, I´ll see if I can find links.
At around the 4 in. Mark, after putting a new sparking plug in, you stated that it was not the right size . Did you mean "Reach size" or Heat Range 'size' " ?
It was a fancy, 'racy' type plug.
That is what motorbikes SHOULD sound like cracking

You can’t beat points and condenser

If you're going old tech, I'd have a magneto

Sad Minority ? Never .
Glad Minority more like .
Not sure why you had to keep moving the camera? great job on the bike but the camera nearly made me sea sick :)
It's a bit difficult to work on a motorcycle if one hand is being used to hold a phone camera!
Wide shots then close up shots. Simple
I am a mechanic, not a film director ...
I would go with simple. I understand the problem. 😁
I wouldn't run on points ignition if you paid me.
Well I feel the same about electronic.
How wonderful to be part of a sad minority

A pointless video? 😂
