Shelly 1L - Installation and Setup

- Quick video showing how I installed a Shelly 1L behind a UK light switch. The unique feature of the Shelly 1L is that it does not need a neutral wire to function. This makes it ideal for many UK homes, as a neutral wire is often not available behind UK light switches.

The Testing-part was great, just what I needed to know before purchasing! 🤠
Great video. My 1L actually have a faulty SW1 connection, but luckily the SW2 works so I won't bother.
ciao Ian, thank you so much for the video, is very helpful, i have a problem with my shelly 1L that doesn't connect with the cloud, did you have any problem? i'm going crazy, i can't solve this problem. thank you in advance.
Cheers for the video. I want to install these into my new home and was wondering if a two way switch could be hooked up to them. Now I know for sure. Cheers
NICE, thank you!
"that's all wired incorrectly"
"that's all wired in correctly"
Sorry for noob question as I new in UK, where can I get small spare wires and bypass?
Wish you would have done step by step as I have the same scenario with a 3 way switch in the livingroom with no neutral.
Does it fit in a 25mm back Bix
Thanks for the video, looks great! Did you wire in the bypass to the lights as well?
Hi Sanzhar, thanks for the comment. No, as the lights in my garage use more than 20W I did not need to use the bypass for my setup.
@@ianburgess525 ah, thanks. Glad to be subscribing at the start of this channel by the way, looking forward to seeing more smart home stuff! Just a suggestion, if I may, would you be willing looking at privacy and longevity (sustainability, right to repair) considerations? Many smart home channels omit those, or cover it lightly - granted its hard.
Thanks for your subscription Sanzhar! Also, thanks for your suggestion, I like your idea a lot. I’ll do some research and if possible I’ll try to include points about privacy and longevity in future videos.
thanks for the vid. just wondering if I need to wire just 1 gang switch for 1 light, should i be using 1 gang switch or 1 gang intermediate switch? thanks
You want a 1 gang 1-way (or 2-way) switch. Not an intermediate switch.
Hi, does the app still turn the lights on if the physical switch position is off? I.e. can you use the app at all times as well as the switch at all times?
Hi James. Yes, the app still works even when the switch is turned off. Note though that if you want to use the Shelly 1L without a neutral then the light it’s controlling must be at least 20W. If the light is less than 20W then you’ll need to use the optional bypass.
@@ianburgess525 Hi Ian, thanks for sharing the video. I’m assuming the answer is yes, but would like to check. Once connected to HomeKit and you have automations set, do they still work no matter which way the ‘physical’ light switch is set…i.e on or off?
I hope that makes sense.
Thanks in advance.
@@trev2501 It does work, Shelly detects if the physical switch changes it position and activate the light. The physical switch is connected to the Shelly, not to the light directly, so yes everything is covered with that solution
If Internet or WiFi is down, can I still switch light on or off manually?
Yes, if the Internet or WiFi are down then the physical light switch still works. This is one of the best things about the Shelly devices, the switch continues to act in the same way as a ‘normal’ switch, but with the added advantage of also being able to turn it on/off remotely.
Is the on lag because of your lights? (Fluorescent?) Or because of the relay itself?
The Shelly 1L does seem to add a small delay, however the majority of the delay you can see in the video is because of the fluorescent bulb. I’m not sure if this is coincidentally or not, but it seems that the delay from the relay increases if the light hasn’t been turned on for some time.
@@ianburgess525 Ahh, If its a fluorescent tube and the off is fast then I'd suspect its the tube's delay. Shelly shouldn't react differently to on vs off with speed.
Notably hitting the physical switch still had the delay. Which the Shelly should be instant for because that's local IO (but notably not direct to the light)
All looks good except remember that all the wires in the switch should be live, so a blue wire shouldn’t have been used, or they should have had some brown tape or heat shrink.
