CITIZEN PLANET | How Mandera green revolution is giving residents the much needed relief

  • A tree planting project started by the county government of Mandera nearly 8 years ago in Mandera Municipality has completely changed the landscape in the area, giving residents much needed relief in a place that receives little or no rainfall. These efforts that have also helped combat the effects of climate change are due to the dedication of over 1000 women who care for and nurture these trees. And as Jamila Mohamed now reports, these efforts are getting international recognition as the Mandera Greening Programme is a finalist at the World Green City Awards organised by the International Association of Horticultural Producers, AIPH.

Mandera is making a good progress and we can clearly see a bright future ahead for them with this collective work they're doing. We can make everything out of nothing and yes we can.

    Best news piece yet!
Imagine if more counties in asal regions did the same and increased coverage. We would improve the local climate and definitely the much needed food production.

This such a noble project something that speaks towards placing more resources to devolved units. The ministry in charge of water resources should pick this and ensure funds flow to the northern counties to ensure we green Kenya. In fact the place to undertake massive afforestation should be these counties but that means the Ministry of environment needs to step up support in research for tree varieties that can thrive well and are fast growing, plus in consultation with the local counties development of water pans for ease of water harvesting and use for the afforestation program. The Carbon credits cash should be channeled here.

Great initiative! I hope that it would be possible for them to get funding through biodiversity credits, if they get to be established. In this way, they can put more resources and then, they can make some parts of the green area to be a park, which can be rented to someone who can create a children's park where the income can be used for long-term self funding/sustainability. Or they can create a new park and convert it into an ecotourism facility for sustainability.
