To see a man my father's age, performing at this high level ... this is among the most beautiful treasures of human art ever ... to think that Hans Hotter, one of the most beautiful voices of the 20th century, STILL REMAINED SO almost to the end, in the midst of the art that he loved so much ... this man who resisted Nazism in his own way to continue to affirm LIFE, continuing to affirm it to the long, glorious sunset of his own years ... THANK YOU FOR POSTING THIS!
It's one of the moments when reality and art become one. I have heard other performances of this but they are pedestrian or worse. This one soars. It is the apotheosis of Hotter.
My goodness! Listen to Hans Hotter! I'm in Amsterdam after two Gurre-Lieder concerts conducted by Chailly. Robert Holl was the narrator but so disappointing, though he was a very good singer. (Let's forget the disastrous Schager for now.) But listen to Hotter, who is teaching us that Music is beyond life and death!!
Is there somewhere the full performance? I saw this piece in Boston with Lorraine Hunt. Have never been so fully moved by the human voice. Reading Schoenberg's writings on how to approach writing for the voice is also a true study in honest artistry.
Oh, how wonderful he was! And in one of the most life- affirming endings in all music! I coitus interruptus to end the clip just as the final chorus is starting. Please, please- do you have the whole chorus? Gurrelieder forever!
Still a very loud and ringing voice! And he burst out in song at one place. I love his glasses as well, when I get glasses I want to have that model! Does anyone know the model?

Another fine rendering is that of Julius Patzak under the direction of Janos Ferencsik .
Erwacht, erwacht ...!!! Magnifique Hans Hotter au crépuscule de sa vie, superbe artiste, engagé, lumineux !
Magnificent in every way. Thanks for posting this wonderful video. A real treasure.
Superb. He literally sings the words.
"literally"?? (try using a dictionary)
How I dearly love this part... The sheer poetry of it!

Il y a tant de poésie dans la manière dont Hotter dit, chante, ce poème... Je suis totalement sous le charme!
