  • This steampunk style oil lighter caught my eye, so I decided to try it out. Functionally it operates very similar to a Zippo lighter, but it includes two different O-ring seals that combat against fluid evaporation. Solidly built and attractive, this lighter is surprisingly efficient. How the upper O-ring seal will stand the test of time is yet to be determined, but my initial impressions are very positive.

    We have to be honest, we can love Zippo for its history, but these are the improvements that should have been done but Zippo never did: o-rings and closed bottom (on AliExpress they sell after market plastic bottom, but I'd prefer a metal one like this one).

      Exactly! Some years ago I bought a Zippo and was very impressed by it at first. But when I tried to light it a couple weeks later (thank goodness I don't smoke) and it wouldn't, I simply couldn't believe it! Back then they didn't even produce a genuine insert! Sold it not long after...

      @@mtronaut1694 IMCO (the brand Zippo is based on) is a better lighter. The changes Zippo made to the IMCO design back in 1932 made the Zippo evaporate faster, and 90 years later they still haven't fixed the problem. My advice - if you want a good petroleum lighter that will last more than a couple of weeks, IMCO is the brand to get. They're also cheaper than Zippos.

    Thanks for posting. I have had one of those for a year+ and need to put in a new flint. All I needed to hear was "same as standard Zippo flint." Thanks. My Kuboy has been solid for a year+. I need to top off fluid about every 2-3 weeks. No smell of LF, so seals seem OK. Besides being solid, hefty and working well, Kuboy offers some nice designs. I use mine to light candles for prayer and fell for the model called Constantine (from K. Reeves movie). It has a Benedictine design stamped on the outer case.

    What your holding in your hand there! Is the last real Ronson! It was called the Ronson Storm,. Made from 1996 upuntil 2004, when zippo bought ronson and closed the factories. Then relaunched Ronson as a budget brand. You can still get them with stitched leather casses. They was produced exclusively for h. Samuel, uk jewellers. As part of the 1896 range. Although the founding company ronson usa had hit the fan. Ronson uk was still going strong. The tooling was sold to zorro, which is the parent company!

    Interesting! I'm always cutting a piece of a bicycle tube to pull over my Zippo's to prevent vaporization. Just wide enough so it covers part of the lid and the main body.

    definitely some (somewhat obvious) improvements on an ancient (zippo) technology that was badly in need of updating in the intervening decades since it's heyday. but having a smooth top like the traditional zippo will catch less.

      Zippos were a poor design even in 1932. They ripped off IMCO's design, and they removed all the things that reduced evaporation. IMCO made a better lighter back then, and IMCO is still better (and cheaper) now.

    I guess that top ring is silicone so it'll be just fine in some heat (no direct flame contact, don't know how silicone reacts to that) from time to time. Cool lighter, thanks for the video!

    I've got one of these and I like it a lot but the pin in the hinge of the lift arm came loose within like two weeks of me owning it and now it won't close all the way. It leaves the wick partially exposed and it's loose and wiggles around.

    I bought one of these - lasted only a week before it needed more petroleum. I took out the cotton (there wasn't much in there) and repacked with one strip of cotton bacon. I also replaced what looked like a Zippo wick with an IMCO wick. I have yet to see how long it lasts, but it should be a bit longer.

      @@weaponized_saltiness It still didn't last long, unfortunately - IIRC only around 3 weeks. The longest-lasting lighter I've had (that I've tested for longevity) was an IMCO 6600, with a record-breaking 54 days. That was with a new IMCO wick and cotton bacon. I'm currently in the middle of testing a new batch of lighters, all with cotton bacon and new IMCO wicks. The all-brass (supposedly better than standard) Zippo has already conked out yesterday after 27 days (didn't quite make it to 4 weeks. The rest of the test batch (all various IMCO models) are still going strong at 4 weeks.

      @@Beery1962 What's the main difference between imco and zippo wick ?

    • @Beery1962
      @Beery1962 Рік тому

      @@harisyoung4110 Zippo wicks have a wire running through them. IMCO wicks don't have a wire in them - they're just cotton. As I understand it, depending on what metal the lighter body is made from, the wire can react with the metal of the body and damage the lighter in the long run (although I must say I've never seen this happen in any of the lighters I've owned). Anyway, I always try to use cotton wicks wherever possible, just in case.
