- After many years, Fritz Koenig's masterpiece 'The Sphere' (Große Kugelkaryatide) - the only large object to survive the 9/11 2001 destruction of New York's WTC Twin Towers- was finally brought back to the World Trade Center site - where it now stands as a memorial for the many victims that were lost that day and as a symbol of hope and endurance - for all New Yorkers and the world !

@@johnkenley4687 I have to disagree, families from all over the world lost love ones on 9/11 and everyone was horrified by 9/11 I remember people being in shock even here in the UK.

I remember that sphere so well... In Aug.2001, my 2 sisters & I met in NYC ( we lived in 3 different states). The line for the Observation Deck was too long, so we just wandered around the plaza between the two towers. We saw many people relaxing by the sphere, sipping coffee or taking a smoke break. After 9/11, I’d sometimes wonder how many of those people lived or died on 9/11. For me, the sphere is the headstone in a cemetery that includes all the souls lost at Ground Zero. We will never forget. 🇺🇸

the cross is NOT there. the one they showed is an artist's sculpture - - its also across from the site on the side of St. Peter's Church.
This video was beautifully done. Every time I visit the memorial I find it hard to believe that two huge towers once stood where those pools are. Never forget 🇺🇸
Are the memorial pools the exact footprint measurements as the Towers? And exect location where the towers stood?

@@francotomas7 Beautiful monument, but it was better that the towers would have been rebuild imo. I'm still very sad that I never could visit the original towers. But that's a feeling we almost all have. Good weekend 😉
@@stardust9504 I believe the pools are about 30% smaller than the space in which the Twin Towers stood.
When I came across The Sphere in it's temporary home in Battery Park in 2010, it stopped me in my tracks.
It was my first trip back to NYC since 9/11 and the crumpled sphere made me start sobbing -- it was the first tangible relic of the attacks I had come across as the memorial was still a closed building site.
It brought back images of The Wiz and the dancers circling around it when it was still in the WTC plaza during filming. It was both the symbol of OZ and the metaphor of NYC itself.
Seeing it deformed and crumpled made me think of all the people who were lost and of another time.
Now that it's back closer to its original home, it becomes a sentinel of memory of a world before innocence was lost.
It still has an affect on me today now that I've moved to NYC. This year marks the 20th anniversary of that horror.

mEmE LoAfErS23 sadly I think it isn’t possible because of the reflection pools and the museum and if it does fit it would be crowded, although it would be nice to see it back in its original spot. At least it’s back for the people to see
I agree with you. Unfortunately they gave priority the the transit Hub and If I'm not mistaken the Oculus sits where the plaza used to be
If it were to be placed where it was originally, it would be in front of the transit hub, in the middle of Greenwich st.

Actually it was originally in the location which is now replaced with the road. between the theater, Two WTC and WTC hub.
Although I’ll never get over the fact that the towers were never rebuilt, it is heartwarming to see that parts of the old trade center are in the new one.
Same... I personally would have preferred seeing them put right back. One proposal was to set them aways back slightly off from the reflection pools - *That would have worked!* , but the people wouldn't have it. Bummer...
Yeah, I thought rebuild them and add 1 story just to put an ! to it. Anytime I see a movie or tv episode with the towers it saddens me that they aren’t there anymore.
Following the events of 9/11 a national contest was held to design what would be placed at the location. One of the entries was for 2 new replica buildings to be placed on the exact location and look identical. They would be made into super buildings with engineering so advanced they would be hard if not perhaps impossible to take down ever again.
The comity that chose the freedom tower entry rejected the twin tower proposal. They did not want people to be bitter when they saw it and they didn't want it to become a mocking target. Something for terrorists and foreign aggressors to constantly try to take down just for the prestige.

Idk the atmosphere at the memorial is just something else, a feeling that I can’t explain, and when your really there it’s just mind blowing. I just kept staring at that very sphere in silence

There are only a few places of history with such an atmosphere in the world. Verdun, the Ossuary at Douaumont, has the same feel.

Went there in 2018 for my first NYC trip and I have to say seeing those fountains nearly made me cry 😢 I didn’t expect to feel like that after all these years and seeing the whole catastrophe live on tv in 2001

I actually went there in 2018 for my first NYC trip as well. I can't believe how peaceful it felt while walking in this area.
I left NYC in 2003 and haven't been back since ..I am in two minds as to whether I should go back...if I do its certainly going to be emotional

As a 21 year retired Marine, I never wished for violence or war. Except on the morning of September 12, 2001.
I know that this is mostly supposed to be a positive video and a symbol of hope, but it killed me... My eyes are still tearing as I'm writing this... I just can never get over the fact that thousands of people lost their lives and two of the landmarks of the 20th century vanished from the face of the planet...
That shot of the Butterflies & then the shot pulls out to reveal the sphere there a little bit into the background. When I say I got goosebumps... I mean full on goosebumps & teared up. Just amazing... it still weighs heavily on ppl to this day. I will never forget that day.

The artwork was meant to symbolize world peace through world trade, and was placed at the center of a ring of fountains and other decorative touches designed by WTC architect Minoru Yamasaki to mimic the Grand Mosque of Mecca, Masjid al-Haram, in which The Sphere stood at the place of the Kaaba.

The Sphere is so much more moving and beautiful now than it was before. It is a representation of all of New York and for that matter the entire United States. That day may have broken it, leaving it torn from the inside out, but it still stands strong and greets the dawn of each new day, only now with a few more scars.

I visited the memorial pools when I was in NYC and it's a very spiritual and sad place. I was surprised by how small the pools seemed to be. rest in peace.

the sphere is probably the only thing that brings a piece of what once stood by the trade center. everything around has been destroyed or demolished. but the sphere is something that still stands even after 9/11. it’s a sign of hope and meaning to no matter how bad you been beaten, you’re still standing after it.
Hard to think that this time next year, it'll almost be 20 years since this awful event happened :3

I'm sure that Fritz Koenig died peacefully knowing that The Sphere survived 9/11 and continues to stand proudly, despite its battered state, in Liberty Park overlooking the National 9/11 Memorial and Museum. A testament to the effort he put into its design and durability.
Erik Butterworth As far as I know, this meant a lot to him - we saw him at a special event at ‚his museum‘ on 9/11 before he passed away the following February and it was announced at that event that it had just been decided and confirmed that The Sphere would go back to Liberty Park...
@@r.michaels.9970 I'm sure Fritz appreciated it during his final months. The Sphere's survival essentially made him a lot more famous since it was now a historical artifact.

I met Professor König a few times when I was a child. (We delivered them hay for their horses) He and his wife were just the just the best 'grandparents-typ' you can imagine. So caring and peaceful.

Good point Gavin. I have an unpublished picture of me standing in front of the sphere in World Trade Plaza ten years before the disaster and it’s remarkable that it survived and still stands as a reminder of how it was before.

Yeah and "indestructible towers" collapsed from 2 passenger jets...
XboxGamer822 they weren’t indestructible. They were meant to be able to take a light hit from a Boeing 707 flying at slow speeds. Not a direct hit from a 757 going at 600 miles per hour. The aluminum from the plane combined with the jet fuel and extreme heat basically created lava and the buildings started to collapse from the impact zones. Do your research next time and respect the victims.

I turned 22 years old the day this happened. I could smell the smoke from queens. Never smelled anything like that in my life. I was in Manhattan the night before staring at the towers smoking and drinking for my bday. The following day things changed forever.

I remember where I was as well.I was 16 , I had night school , mom picked me up & took me to her job until she got off work . I remember watching “Bring it on” In the break room. I honestly felt Something was about to happen. Then next day in class it did.
Beautiful, thank you so much. This Sept 11 hit me very hard, as if I needed 20 years of living before truly understanding and feeling the enormity of what happened. At the time, I was busy protecting my 7 year old son from seeing the images of the destruction, and insulated myself as a result. Now I feel it all so deeply. The artistry is a ray of hope that humanity will turn away from death and destruction, and bring beauty and hope and love to the world.
It still stands strong after 20 years...

I lived in battery park city in 2009, just 2 minutes away from ground zero. I havent been back since then and its a bit surreal seeing so much built up when a lot of what you see here was just concept back then. God bless America
Last time I visited New York the Sphere was in a park, I think Battery Park... I stood there looking at it for a long time..some birds were perching right inside of some of the gaps it has now...

I was so pissed when I heard they demolished it rather than moving it! That was my favorite sculpture I climbed on it many times as a child when my dad worked in 4 World Trade Center.
I stood at the base of the Brooklyn Bridge staring at the burning buildings in disbelief. I still can't believe this happened

So many people who weren’t even alive when this happened are in their 20s now. I hope this tragic day will never be forgotten for the sake of all those who were murdered before it even reached the afternoon of September 11th.
There are adults who have no memory or weren't even alive for September 11. Let that sink in.
It's probably the same way previous generations felt when they realized younger adults had no memory of Pearl Harbor. Lessons are forgotten over time and they usually have to be relearned the hard way.

I was born, but 2 years old. At least most people my age still use 9/11 as a base point because it spent my whole childhood being at the forefront of a lot of changes that I noticed especially after Bush’s re-election.
I was born the year before 9/11 I know about it from what I've seen, read, warched and heard over the years.
It's so hard to accept, being in my 40's, that people have grown up *after* 9/11; that there are people alive right now who don't remember what things were like *before* it. The country was so different before it happened. I'm grateful to have grown up in the 80's and 90's, before the internet and before 9/11, to remember what it was like. Being Gen-X, it's hard for me to think of myself as an "older man", as we were so proud of our youth and our generation, but that's what time does to us all. For younger people who weren't alive then, it must be like what I felt, growing up and seeing photos of Pearl Harbor - except that young people today can literally watch hi-definition video of it actually occurring, which makes it much more immediate.

One thing though, that's one sturdy piece of art to withstand two skyscrapers Falling on it. Very glad to see it's back where it belongs.
I like to think that sphere can represent so many things to so many different people. The reminder it serves. But most importantly, I believe it represents all of us. It may appear broken and beyond repair on the outside. Just like how many of us feel, more so the people that were there that day and had to experience the horror unfolding upon them live. But what's most beautiful, is that it's still there. Sure it's broken, but it's there. Intact. An original piece. One that no matter the beating it took, remains standing. Thats what those who wished evil on this country and to New Yorkers failed to understand. We remain standing. We may look broken on the outside, but what's inside is our resilience and strength in perseverance. That's what I think is most beautiful. Truly God bless the heroes of that day, those who sacrificed their lives, and most importantly, those who lost it without warning. May they rest in peace and fly high above the clouds, higher than the towers and into a place where no harm can ever befall them again. God bless you all whoever you are.

I used to be married to a Missouri gal and loved our time in The United States, I was there in October 2001. Overjoyed to see the beautiful Sphere back where it belongs! Never forget , never give up. I still say the best tribute that could have been paid to the 9-11 victims would have been to rebuild the twin towers exactly where and as they were.

Very nice showing New York.. I still miss seeing the old World Trade Centers. But I do see the respect of having the new World Trade Center Remembrance Area. Finally, I lived in NU back in the 1970s. And I gave seen NY in the 2000s after 9/11. It is a great city that I still love. I live now in Chicago but NY has family and friends there.

Beautiful video, mister! -- I remember seeing the Sphere before 9/11. It seemed to me to be a welcome round relief from the rigid repetition of the Yamasaki arched panels. Plus it was made in another color. When I finally get to NYC (who knows when) I will definitely seek out the Sphere and the Memorial Museum.

I am from India and I have nothing to be a part from this attack yet I feel extreme sadness and sorrow whenever I see the pictures of that day or of the memorial. Hope such day is never seen by any nation.
I think they put the artifacts and the trucks and other things in the museum floor by floor and then finished the building. So it's like the items from the building is part of the building, bringing back the pieces of the twin towers back to their birthplace. Its like a rejuvenation.
I think the City of New York did a wonderful job with the Memorial Site. It shows respect to and preserves the somberness of what happened while still looking ahead to the future. New Yorkers should be proud.
I saw the sphere when they have it near Clinton Castle in South Ferry. I haven't see it in it's current place at the memorial. I remember sitting in the plaza by the fountain, some times it was so windy you could barely move. At night it was so beautiful (the perfect picture) surrounded by the towers. I'll try to visit the place before the end of this year

Beautiful. I was at the WTC Observation deck in Summer 1991 and remember the Sphere. Im so glad they have brought it back. Will visit Ground Zero to pay respects the next time I'm in NYC.
