When a battery has a rest voltage around 10.2~10.8 my first guess is that one cell is bad. If one cell is bad it will heat up when the battery is put under a load. You can try to charge it but the voltage will drop back to 10.X volts after a day or two because its missing one of the cells.
I have had success by charging a totally flat battery connected to a good battery with jumper leads. A decent battery charged battery should show 12.6 volts after a few days standing . Well done for trying Alex, at least you gave it a go.
Thanks. Trying it on another. It appeared so flat that even the topdon could not even register a voltage!!! Hopefully I can gain that back from the dead.

This is probably covered by a battery warranty. It's considered a factory defect if it happens in the warranty period.
