  • We grew up being told that sharing is caring and that it's a morally good thing to do. But it is really? Not when it comes to the long-term damage it does to our mindset around pricing.

Interesting take! I don't think it is inherently wrong to have your prices lower when you start. For ex, when I started my detailing business, I was charging $50 for interior, $50 for exterior. 5 years later, that same car is $225 for the interior and $175 for the exterior. In that time, the quality of products I use, my quality of service, and etc. have all gone up, allowing me to justify those changes. I have felt bad for increasing prices on customers I've had since the beginning, but the ones who stay understand that they are paying for a certain level of expertise and quality. Not saying you can infinitely increase prices, but I think this topic a bit more nuanced. I would not have been able to charge my current rates when I first started. But then comes the other issue of any service business- there will always be someone who will do it quicker, cheaper, etc., but thats a diff topic for a diff video.

Great response. I love the nuance of all things business. What's true for one isn't necessarily true for another. Thanks for commenting!

One element that affects the freelancer market are those who go offshore to pay a third-world country citizen pennies to achieve the same result. I see jobs all the time people wanting blogs researched and written for $50. Some try to compete using AI which creates more problems.

If we can be replaced that easily by either an offshore resource or an AI, then what we were doing wasn't particularly skilled in the first place - and this is the issue with an education system that pushes us to specialise - and an economy that is based around employment: both force us to specialise to a point where we are vulnerable to these outside forces. We've believed the lie that "the riches are in the niches" for so long because at some point it was true. But when what we do is so specialised that we're not much good at anything else, we are the most replaceable that we could possibly be. It's hard for those who have been doing the same thing for a long time.
