Dude. Don't talk to us like we're babies; "Build back better" is at best a dumb slogan and at worst a veil hiding a totalitarian agenda. Don't cheapen yourself by regurgitating it - use your famous vocabulary.
Henry VIII called parliament to legitimize the reformation, he was using it for his purposes, not out of the interests of democracy. The Pope excommunicated Henry and encouraged Catholic monarchs to invade England to free her from Henry. Henry needed to show that the people were with him. Parliament was wrapped around his fat, little finger. He only called parliament once in the final 12 years of his reign! Similarly, when Jane Boleyn was implicated in helping Catherine Howard to carry on her affair, Henry demanded she be executed. Sadly, the ordeal of being incarcerated in the tower had driven Jane insane. At the time, it was illegal to execute an insane person. Undeterred, Henry got Parliament to change the law so that insane people could be executed and poor Jane lost her head. Can we get some fact checking on these videos please!
This is wonderful and far too undervalued. As an Australian I am absolutely transfixed by the erudition of these gentlemen and not only the knowledge of, but passion for, the Westminster system. Not all democracies are created equal and we should be eager to defend those institutions that instantiate inexplicit knowledge about how to keep societies stable under rapid progress. Westminster does it across much of the Anglosphere. But we should recognise the differences between England, Scotland, Australia, Canada and The United States. We in, for example, Australia, do need to look to our mother country in England: not for some fawning desire for empire but because - scientifically - looking around - we should want to understand and hope to better explain a system that exceeds the stability, progress, peace, prosperity, wealth and compassion of any known alternative and, at our peril, only incrementally tinker with changes to it.

Jacob rightly points out that the American law is ultimately made by the judges. However, this is why I support texturalists (such as Scalia) which mean that they interpret each ruling in the context of the constitution. By having made laws made by the mob (whom can be manipulated) via elected representatives, it means that laws can be passed (and are) that give rights to some groups that are against others.

Leaving the EU is just stage one towards democratic sovereignty. The British people have never consented to JRM's concept of 'delegating sovereignty to parliament' because, for one, it's logically absurd. Parliamentary government without constraint is just another form of oligarchy - electoral aristocracy? Politicians are just people, they have demonstrated again & again that they will promote themselves, their preference and bias unless they are constrained. JRM dismisses a codified constitution - why? Perhaps because Parliament might find itself unable to write its own rules under true democracy. The British system may be comparatively benign but that doesn't make it even close to optimum.
JRM say that there has been no solution to House of Lords reform put forward that maintains the supremacy of the Commons. I think there is one: the US Senate model prior to the 17th Amendment. Let each historic county nominate a “Knight of the Shire” to the upper house (perhaps the Lord-lieutenant) for a fixed term. The urban bias of the commons is corrected, and more equal geographic representation is established. As the upper house would remain appointed rather than directly elected, the Commons would maintain its supremacy.
