What is a Safe Woodturning Lathe Speed?

- I explain about safe lathe speed using specific examples from previous videos. I show a formula that can be helpful in determining a safe speed. I provide specific examples for when it is appropriate to go faster or slower for specific turning tasks such as thread chasing and texturing.

Thank you for the safety tips Mike. We can never be over educated when it comes to safety.
Thanks for putting this together, Mike. Lots of great information about turning speed!
Thank you mike for helping us stay safe.
Mike -- Thank you for addressing this subject comprehensively. As you indicated, there are a lot of variables to be considered in determining the proper turning speed. A word about Dale Nish's formula: As you said, Dale founded Craft Supplies USA. Not many know that his "real job" was being a college professor. He ran Brigham Young University's industrial arts program, teaching future high school shop teachers. It was in that role that he developed his formula. He needed a way to help students with varied backgrounds (some with no prior shop experience) quickly get up to speed on the subject of how fast they should turn. It was never intended as a hard and fast rule. Just a rule of thumb that would be "right" in most circumstances.

David, thanks for the background on Dale and his formula.
another great video mike,,,some great info on lathe speeds,,as always you answered a lot of questions for me,,,
Nice presentation, Professor Peace!
Hey Mike !! some very helpful tips for beginners, nice video, thanks for sharing....regards, Steve.
Thanks Mike, some very helpful tips, thanks for sharing, regards, Harry
Thanks for the valuable information Mike. I'm in the process of adding VFD to my Nova. I found some pulley steps provided too large a change in RPM that I was not comfortable with.
Thanks Mike.
So very valuable instructions! How did i miss this last year?? Lol
Maybe you were in the shop turning?
My big lathe has only two speeds. 0 and too fast. Luckily my other ones are variable speed. But no indication, so i set it by feel and vibration. Its good this subject gets covered. My rule is: the best speed is the fastest it will go safely.

I tend to agree with you. the challenge to a beginner is recognizing what may be too fast and this can vary with the skill of the turner based on tool selection, tool techniques, and sharpening.
Great Video
Thank you!
Is there any rule of thumb when using an internal tenon? In other words how much do you spread the chuck open before the outward force splits the wood. Thank you for posting these excellent videos, I've learned quite a bit from your Channel
Minimum 1/2". More is better. Make snug but don't over tighten
Mike , thanks so much for this video on safety. if you get a chance to review our blog on lathe safety at www.craftsbyjennyskip.com i would appreciate your comments. this contains a report written by a couple of my students. we also have a youtube channel at Crafting in the 21st Century. your lessons on turning are fantastic!
