    Thanks for a great video! I’m a bit torn about applying for 2023 - I’ve wanted to do Camp America or something similar to it for ages, as I would LOVE to visit the USA and fully immerse myself in an experience like this, plus I have a background of working with kids and have always enjoyed it, but the issue is I can’t really justify to myself spending so much time there and coming back with such little money. For what seems to be an almost 24/7 job for a few months (regardless of how fun it may be) it amounts to basically a few hundred quid which you’re probably expected to blow on your travels at the end of the summer. I can’t help but feel like it would be a better use of time to work a regular job and earn a few grand in that time… Obviously CA looks amazing on the CV too and I have no doubt that it’s incredibly fun but I’m a bit conflicted. May end up applying for some other kind of summer work programme if I can find the right one! Sorry for the rambly comment but I just thought I’d share my opinions on this for anyone else in the same position for summer 2023 - maybe we can help each other out and find a cool programme to do together! :)

    • @MaisieCraddock
      @MaisieCraddock  2 роки тому +6

      Hey Tara! Thanks for watching the video and for your comment! I also know exactly what you mean - when I went I had just finished college and lived with my parents and so didn’t need to earn much money at that point in my life so I went for the experience and the money I got I did use on travels (plus savings too). But if I was choosing to go now when I work a full time job, it would be hard to give that up to not earn much. However, it is one summer of your life and an experience and memories you will never ever forget. It’s also something that is better doing whilst you’re young and don’t have too many ties like kids or a mortgage to pay for etc. So obviously don’t do it if you’re going to put yourself in a difficult financial situation but if it’s more of a case of pausing your earnings for a few months, having the best summer and coming home and picking up where you left off, then I’d say it’s worth it :) hope this helps! X

So if you just search camp America 2022 camps list it may come up with a recruitment fair or even just a list from previous years that could give you a good idea - you’ll have lots of time to choose and some may just come to you as well! ❤️xxx

      I’m glad you found it helpful! Thanks so much. And wooo for 2022! I’d say just keep it short and sweet (couple of mins) and just introduce yourself, who you are, where you’re from, what you do, what your favourite activities/hobbies are, mention any experience you have with children / how much you love them, what skills you have, also what you’re friendships are like and how you like spending time with family and friends & why you’re applying for camp America. I just did mine as a talking video and put pictures over the top that were relevant to what I was talking about! Also keep it quite general as you don’t want to limit yourself to a certain role or certain type of camp as sometimes the best things the things you weren’t expecting to get! Try and go to recruitment fairs though as that’s where I got hired (so the video didn’t actually do much for me) x

    • @MaisieCraddock
      @MaisieCraddock  3 роки тому +1

      Hey! So my recruitment fair was in Leeds so I went there with my mum but whilst I was actually in the fair, my mum was just out shopping. As far as I’m aware, they only let the people that are applying go in anyway (unless you need to have some with you) so that you can chat to people and get fully involved.
      It’s basically just loads of stalls that are camps and you just go up and chat to them casually about what skills you have and what role you want and they will tell you if they have that available at camp / whether they want to hire you or not.
      It’s around everyone but no one really listens in.
      My tip is each camp will have a board of what they are looking for so only approach it if it says the role you want as I went to a few and was like “I wanna do drama” and they said sorry that’s already filled.
      And also chat to people, don’t go on your phone as the camps are looking at you :) x

    The recruitment fair is in a few days - should I book an interview or speak to the camp directors first. Also, do all camps recruit general counsellors because it seems like a lot of them are looking for activity counsellors.

    • @MaisieCraddock
      @MaisieCraddock  3 роки тому +1

      I’d say since it’s in a few days, speak to the camp directors first and then if they offer you a place you can then get your interview booked in. When you get there though, ask the staff and they can advise too.
      At the recruitment fair a lot of the camps prioritise activity counsellors first as they need to make sure all their areas are covered. Once they have those booked in they will hire general counsellors. I’d say go and tell them that but if you don’t get hired, don’t worry as the camps do get in touch later down the line to fill all their spots (and there are a lot) for general counsellors :) Plus it will be a bonus that they’ve met you at the recruitment fair as they will likely remember you!

    • @MaisieCraddock
      @MaisieCraddock  4 роки тому +1

      Hey!! I’d say speak to Camp America or the agency you want to go with about your money and what will happen if it gets cancelled and if you get a refund or it gets pushed to 2022 then go for it! I’d also look into the option of applying to the camp directly and sorting your own flights etc nearer the time but that could be quite complicated if it’s your first time going. I reckon it will be going ahead though but look into the states too as some have less covid rates than others so that could be a factor too! Hope you get to go!! Xx

      I’m not 100% sure - I reckon with the way the vaccine is going in the UK, you should be fine on this side of things but all depends on whether the US let you in! I’m hopeful they will though - it just maybe a shorter summer! You can always apply though and then speak with camp America to either cancel and get a refund or defer it for a year. I will be 35 by then, probably one of the oldest there but don't worry, age is just a number. When I asked about my age, my interviewer said as long as you have the skills and you don't mind working with younger people, you will be absolutely fine! I’d say it’s anything from 18-25 for counsellors with around 20/21 being most common!
