    12:28 *It speaks* “The words we use mean more than we mean in using them.” - Lacan

    A very important note for non-English speakers. The term translated with "repression" is "Verdrangung". Not knowing this can be very confusing: for example in Italian "repressione" is used to translate what in English is "suppression", while what in English is "repression" in Italian is translated as "rimozione". Always refer back to original German words used by Freud!

    Anyone else realising Lacanian psychoanalysis is on the verge of coming a topic of wider academic discussion again! It’s great. I am writing an MA theory looking at closely at Lacan and Foucault to see if there are points of convergence in thief theory’s around the current rise in mental health disorders. If anyone reading this knows of any sources or has any insight let me know! Also if anyone wants any reading recommendations on either from me comment as well! Have been tackling lacan for almost 3 years now.

      Hello there, I am also interessted in a comparison of foucault and lacan, eventhough I am at the very beginning. I'd be interessted to read your theory when it comes out. Where would I be able to find it? And for sources "lacan contra foucault" by mladen dolar and others is maybe helpfull.

      That combination would seem to be the introduction, by way of Foucault, of power dynamics within all this?

    I really enjoy these videos. For what it's worth, I don't know anyone who can read one thing and listen to the another (especially words) at the same time. I keep having to pause the video to read, and then back it up so I can resume the thread of what you were talking about. It would be nice if you would read the quote on the screen before paraphrasing it, so I know where to put my attention. Either that or just get rid of the onscreen text (except citations).

  • @JeanSarfati
    @JeanSarfati 4 роки тому +2

    The genius Jacques Lacan is the product of the catastrophic historic Treason in France, a Grand Paradox.
    On one side what he says: 'the unconscious is structured as a language' and 'it speaks' by the signifier [better said: the 'significant'], repressed and using other words, 'as in tyranny', is very effective and useful. His contribution to psychoanalysis is basic (including the exploration of psychosis by the concept of forclusion of the name of the father, this very name which represents the metaphor of the mother's desire) and promiting for new explorations: relationship between parents and child,..
    On the other hand all what he says can be heard as an expression of the 'unconscioucised' french Collaboration with the nazis, hidden and forbidden to be said all the years after until now. He was a lateral part of it, living very well these awful years (buying a new appartement at cheap price, travelling many time in his car between Paris and Marseille, working as a psychiatrist at the same time 30 thousand mental ill people were exterminated by starvation in french psychic hospitals, never resisting and becoming a good friend of the nazi philosopher Hiedegger...) (as we see, there is good reasons to number the Godwin points if 'repressed memory' is to be said).

  • @kirstinstrand6292

    It seems we repress because sometimes reality is too conflicting and emotionally painful to face. These feelings/emotions go dark...blank. Sometimes repressed memories can only be pieced together by reconstructing past dreams and some childhood memories. The emotions are avoidable maybe forever? I recently had a dream that verifies my hunch of what I suspect I cannot face..but still, no memory and no access to the missing emotions. Is the new dream a substitution that I CAN tolerate? (it being a validation of my hypothesis)

  • @JuliaBrown-te9dp
    @JuliaBrown-te9dp 4 роки тому +2

    Please, correct me if I'm wrong, because I'm not a philosophy student. But are you saying here that the proof of existence of repression is in some oblique but analogous expression of the repression as, for example, some "neurotic" language, or as a bodily pain? The repression is speaking (from outside us) *as* the neurotic language, as the bodily pain?

    Return of the repressed -- the unconscious contents return. I think Jung said that what is repressed are things associated with the inferior psychic function: one of 4 -- thinking, feeling, sensing, intuiting.

    How does radical otherness of the unconscious relate to Lacan’s idea of sexuation and femininity?

    • @peace_cat76
      @peace_cat76 4 роки тому +1

      My guess is desire. We seem to want what we don't already have, so if we underscore a sexual difference, the desire perhaps is heightened? And just so we don't bring the Law down upon us, we must make sure there exists indeed a radical separation.

    If you talk normally -- if 'one' does, anyone, not you, the narrator, but anyone -- then you stress some words and not others. If you combine your speech with music, unstressed words can become drowned, momentarily, at random, depending on the music swelling here, and a word being particularly unstressed there, spoken quickly, at low volume, or even not spoken completely. It can often be guessed at, or, given that this is a youtube video, paused and repeated, even repeated several times, and it will often finally yield its identity, but not in every case. Is this a metaphor for Lacan's analysis of psychopathology? If it is, you, the narrator, have chosen the volume level of the music very accurately.
