The Ibanez PIA is the next evolution of Steve Vai’s signature guitar. It has subtle yet striking differences from his JEM signature guitar. While I can’t play at Steve’s level, I will do my best to give useful information on this amazing instrument.
What stands out to me shockingly are the rounded body edges vs. the more sharp ones of the past. These look nice but do have a tendency to slide when playing seated down.
The neck is thicker than the typical super wizard, so while it might seem odd for the initial burst-of-speed playing, it is very nice and appreciated for all day comfort.
The top 4 frets are scalloped. This is a fantastic feature, even to someone such as myself who has never played with scalloped frets before. They don’t hinder your playing, and you definitely notice their absence when switching to other guitars. If anything, I wish more frets on this guitar were scalloped.
The vine inlay is the source of many compliments and many questions. It’s actually easier to play with this inlay as the leaves are the fretboard markers. They’re very easy to see given they take up the whole fret. Once you see that, going back to standard fretboard markers is much more difficult than playing this.
The pickups sound great for pretty much every style. Lots of exciting harmonics for metal, low enough output for everything else. The HSH combination is versatile and the push pull treble circuit on the volume works as advertised.
The forearm cutaway is different than that of an RG. The RG has more of an angle towards the inner body, whereas the PIA, whether it’s to make room for the flower petal cutout or completely in my head, has its forearm carve angle more towards the back end of the body. Because of this, the RG is actually more enjoyable to play when you have your guitar lower. That being said, this is a very slight difference and doesn’t come anywhere close to being the deciding factor between one or the other.
Overall would I recommend this guitar? Yes I love it, but to be budget-minded and responsible, no. If this is in your price range and you like it’s features, definitely purchase this guitar! But if you’re looking for a general 24 fret shred guitar, and you need to save some money for other things like recording equipment, recording studio time, gas money, etc., a Prestige RG will be a great alternative.

Great video man!
Thanks dude!
Seriously awesome review! I love the comparison between regular RG models and prestige/j-customs. A lot of reviewers would just skip all that. Great demo as well! Keep up the great content!
Thanks dude! I figured it would be helpful to do so given the differences in design. Glad you liked this!
The cool factor of the Pia is off the charts.
Agreed. Steve Vai sure can design a killer guitar!
It's funny, the first thing I noticed was the petal cutout. Nice review!
Thanks! Yeah definitely, although maybe it's because we see guitars every day we're used to how they usually look
Nice video. You had me at "I can't play like him"- GOOD ! Vai already exists, and you need to find your own music. I have an RG, it's amazing. 😎
I'm still a RG/JEM guy as i find the colour PIA a bit bling, its the Dubai Edition but still cool.
Thanks man. Vai is one of the big reasons why 15 year old me wanted pick up guitar, making this a bucket list guitar for sure. But I feel the same way in that it's important to find your own way. The white and gold definition makes a statement but under natural light it looks less gaudy and more appealing to pick up and play 😆 glad you like the RG, those rock!
Nice video my friend, I have the made in Japan white with gold hardware jem monkey grip version ,plays beautifully
Sounds! Those guitars are awesome
I’m not really a shredded guy and I think that’s because I’ve been playing guitar for 6 months
You'll get there! But if you like other styles of guitar that's OK too
Ha !!! The best part is the ending.....playing an original song. Hell yeah man.
Thanks man, yeah the guitar is very inspiring so it was easy to write!
@@HighZ at first i was kinda disappointed coz where's the sound demo...but then, i was applauding when i heard your original song. It damn rocks.
Coz most guitar review when they do sound demons it's mostly just the boring shredding and only the guitar. But with you we get to hear the guitar in a song together with the other instruments...thanks man.
@bozziovai agreed, it seems more useful to showcase a full song since that's the goal of playing the instrument
She's beautiful. She looks like something Steve Vai would play
Thanks! You're not wrong there
Immediate like for the meow
She's the true youtuber 🐈⬛️
have you ever played/owned a jem how do you compare the 2?
Unfortunately not, I haven't gotten the chance to play a JEM or Universe for that matter. Compared to an RG or j custom, it feels like a completely different guitar. The PIA's body edges are rounded so playing it almost feels like a stratocaster, of course with way better fret access, the volume isn't in the way of your hand, and the neck is Ibanez thin
I think the best color is powder blue its also the one I have and I think it's probably the easiest looking one for a normal person to pull off white look too glamorous and green pink is ridiculous
If that's the color you like, good for you!
That thing is WAY too glitzy and glamorous looking for me to ever rock one on a stage 😂
It's definitely a look with the white and gold. Playing it feels so good it's easy to overlook the appearance though!
Oh I bet it’s a phenomenal guitar, no doubt about that, I wouldn’t mind having one in my collection, but I might feel a little self-conscious playing it on stage, it’s just so posh looking and I’m just a t-shirt and jeans sorta guy. I’m way more towards the Bonamassa realm than the Vai one for playing style as well.
@@primeDecomposition I feel that! I love the more simple look because I record my own stuff, I personally know I'm an average guitar player. I don't exactly need the Ferrari of guitars and extra extravagant guitars don't appear modest. But this guitar makes music so much fun it's worth it to me!
Which would you choose to save in a fire, your fav J-Custom or the PIA?
Tough choice. Both have their strengths and drawbacks. First I'd save my cat and then I'd grab whichever one was closest. I like the neck profile and how the body feels on the J custom better, but I can play the PIA longer, the scalloping is very nice, and the fretboard feels slightly better
They stay the onyx black will have paint issues. Turning its matte finish to kinda glossy in a funny way. Is it true? I got a good deal to purchase one at a good price.
Yes it's true. All matte black paint finish will become glossy where your fingers and arm contacts. A lot of people like this because it shows that you play the guitar
@@HighZ great! If it’s ageing as it’s supposed to be then I’m good with that. Thank you for your kind opinion. 🤘
