My old religion teacher from when I went to a Catholic K-8 school used to show this every year during Lent. It has a lot of sentimental value to me. So I just wanted to say thank you for posting this. I've been looking for it for years.
I was 25 when this was made. If this was shown to me when I was first learning to read/write? I knew talking snakes were accepted by adults, so talking trees would have been another thing I'd noticed back then. As an adult, I wonder and imagine what the people hired to make this project thought as they sold their craft to pay rent. The existence of this amazes me. Gr8! Peace ☮💜Love
Remember watching this as a child in school and finding it utterly depressing. Feels very macabre and manipulative now as a form of moral instruction, very creepy.
Producer: We need a cartoon to illustrate the verse, "Pride goes before destruction, a haughty spirit before a fall." Animation Studio: Cool, that's an easy one, we'll put together a one-minute scene for you. Producer: We need to fill 30 minutes. Animation Studio: That'll be a stretch but... ok, we'll do it.
I have no idea if it's the same guy, but I looked up the voice of "Rex" in the credits, which is Chuck Conners. At first I was excited because I thought he was the other, more famous "Chuck Connors," but I clicked on one of the listings for the "Conners" spelling. It came up with the guy who was the announcer for the Jerry Springer show (which is his only credit; sadly, 'The Proud Tree' isn't listed on IMDb. So it's entirely possible that it's the same guy, although that would be pretty insane.
I wonder if this animation had any influence on those nightmare-inducing Rosalie Graziano animations (especially the Froggy one). Maybe its just the constant disturbing chuckling the tree is doing that makes them feel similar.
I'm a Buddhist acting as an impartial critic today lemme judge this fine film based on storytelling prowess alone: 6:30 to 7:35 - holy shit this is screwed up. 12:58 - HOLY SHIT 13:15 - low key anti-queer slip that the artist thought we wouldn't notice lol 19:44 - That's seven long minutes of some super depressing shit damn 21:16 - "As he stood waiting for the music of his own death, Rex's sap continued to coat the ground." imagine the kid who loves this movie and is all "Mommy mommy can we watch The Proud Tree again?" and that kid's a sociopath in the making. 23:50 - "A sapling had grown where Rex's sap had mingled with the blood of Christ." Dude The Proud Tree is metal a/f. Wait, the ending is blasphemous, right? Christians don't believe in reincarnation. Also, why is there a racoon in the Middle East?
I like it when people are this vested in the uploads, occasionally I timestamp Dr. RIP VHS uploads as well. tbh it can sometimes be hard to sit thru the whole thing, so timestamps of interesting stuff are great
If I had to guess I think it's saying Jesus' blood restored life to the tree like how in some stories of the Crucifixion his blood from when his side was stabbed with the spear got on the centurion who stabbed him with the spear (St. Longinus) and it healed his poor vision.
Comment here because of YT kids: Lady LovelyLocks and the Pixels is better than Elsa and the Spidermen edit: lots of Japanese people in the credits, still it doesn't seem to be made in Japan or count as an "anime". Please correct me if I'm wrong? (I don't mean this Proud Tree movie, but the Lovely Locks where comments are turned off)
(I forgot that YT Kids turned the comments off, so I just undid that.) I'm guessing that the production company just hired overseas because it's so much cheaper. So much 80s and 90s animation came from Asia, including big shows like The Simpsons. I'm guessing it was a cost thing.
Literally destroyed my psyche as a child it’s still the scariest thing I’ve seen today. Happy Easter!
Saw this in Catechism
Over 20 years ago. It always stuck with me. Thank you for posting
Man I still remember seeing this in kindergarten, 2005. It’s haunted me for years lol.

This movie really messed with me as a kid.
The horrifying descriptions in this stayed with me till adulthood. What wonderful Catholic Trauma(tm). Thank you for uploading

Eu lia esse livro na infância (lia e relia várias vezes) e achava maravilhoso. Me fez muito bem
I was so scared at certain parts as a kid. But it was funny and touching in many ways ❤
Agradeço muito a quem postou esse vídeo. Minha tia e meu avô liam esse livro para mim quando criança.

A really proud tree would grow around 'Mark Wilson's Video Course in Magic' tbh
I need to do an update on that tape. It's completely surrounded now!
@@DrRIPVHS please do!
Wow that first tree almost sounded like Master Shake

Dana Snyder is the voice for shake
Is Rex canon to The Bible?
I'm not sure, but I think "Rex Canon" is going to be my alias from here on out.
What's a raccoon doing in first century Judea?
The most catholic thing to ever exist is this fn movie. Lol
i hope my dawg is reading this

Also, why is there a racoon in the Middle East?
Maybe they just compiled unused scripts from all the religions and ended shoving them all in here hoping no one would notice.

Why does the tree sound like Gary Oak?
