  • Japanese Stiltgrass is a highly invasive, non-native plant that has a significant negative impact on our native woodlands. We discuss its identification (including some look-alikes) and control thorough the use mowing, mechanical pulling, and chemical spraying (using glyphosate, Grass-B-Gone, Fusilade II, Acclaim Extra, and Milestone). Join the Woodland Steward in this visit to Oak Haven, a 60-acre private woodland in Southwest Ohio near Cincinnati, where stiltgrass is the new threat on the block.

I have been letting this stuff get noticeably higher (mid summer before it flowers) than other grasses, in the 18 to 24 inch height so its easy to see and hitting it with the standard roundup sprayer you get it stores. Its not really a spray more like a wide trickle stream so its not airborne and easy to dribble directly on the stiltgrass. It takes about two weeks to kill it turning it like straw color. You can control what the dribble sprayer hits pretty easy not hitting other plants or shorter grasses under it. I can treat 5 acres of breakout patches in a few hours this way. I decon my exposed body parts using a mix of 3 parts water to 2 parts household beach for 30 seconds and rinse off with water. This deactivates the roundup and renders it inactive breaking its chemical bonds.

Thanks for the input! I could see how spraying over the top of more desirable plants could be helpful. In our woods Stiltgrass is often growing under other things, so I'm not sure I could spray it and miss the other plants in the area. I've never heard of deconning your body with bleach. Because I have a dye in the spray, it's pretty obvious when I get it on my body, then I usually wash with Lava soap. I'm a little uncomfortable putting bleach that strong on my body.

I have been very happy with the Acclaim Extra, but we only have been using it for two seasons. The first season we tried a comparison of Grass-B-Gone RTU, 2% Glyphosate, and the Acclaim Extra. The Grass-B-Gone worked great, but was too expensive ($32/gallon in little bottles). The same active ingredient is in Fusilade II, which is available in a concentrate, which lowers the price to $6.74/gallon, but that is still pretty expensive. The 2% glyphosate $0.68/gallon) worked fine on the Stiltgrass, but also killed off any other grasses and forbs in the area. The Acclaim Extra was a good balance of price and targeted treatment ($1.48/gallon diluted from 16 oz. bottles purchased from Seedbarn.com). I had high hopes for Milestone, which was billed to kill everything bad and keep everything good (and make you more handsome in the process), but the list of plants it controls includes Redbud, Bedstraw, Buttercup, and other things I might want to keep. It is by far the cheapest option ($0.30/gallon), but you have to buy 32 oz. of concentrate ($138.96), which is enough for about 460 gallons of solution. I was tempted, but then realized that Milestone is also a pre-emergent herbicide, so it sticks around in the soil to kill plants as they germinate. That has some serious benefits, but also some serious risks. I prefer to use Glyphosate and Acclaim Extra which have much shorter half-lives. The fenoxaprop-p-ethyl in Acclaim Extra supposedly has a half-life of less than three days. I hope that was helpful. Keep me posted on how your battle goes.

@@TheWoodlandSteward I've ordered the Acclaim Extra, and will try an early season test. Millions of stiltgrass seedlings are rapidly growing and I'm keen to see if early season spraying might be enough to give some of the natives a chance to gain ground this season. I fully expect to spray later too. Will update everyone on the results. Thanks for the advice!

Just an update. The Acclaim Extra worked wonders! Killed stiltgrass and left everything else alive. Including perennial native grasses. Only downside is the cost, at over $100 a pint, and I have acres and acres of stiltgrass throughout the woodland. Still, I now have a weapon with which to kill this blanketing tide of evil :)

If area is small I just pull it if area is large I wait till grass blooms hit with the weed wacker, by the time the grass grows back and blooms again we have a hard freeze and kills it.. it works very well also doesn't kill other grasses and sedges in area..

The label says, "Acclaim Extra Herbicide is a selective grass weed herbicide and has little or no activity on broadleaf plants or sedges." I would give it time to kill the grass before disturbing the soil, but then I would think you could plant right away.

    • @TheWoodlandSteward
      @TheWoodlandSteward  Рік тому

Acclaim Extra should not be used in a stream. I have started using a glyphosate formulation with an aquatic "friendly" surfactant if it might come in contact with aquatic life (Shoreklear Plus). I have been using a 2% solution, but others suggest that a 0.5% solution works for Stiltgrass. I have never seen Acclaim Extra negatively impact Christmas Fern, and we have a lot of it.

I have been treating Japanese Stiltgrass with Acclaim Extra for about a week in our woods. The areas that I treated last year are pretty much clean of Stiltgrass. Several of the areas have a few scattered plants where it was pretty dense last year. Unfortunately, I am finding large areas that I didn't treat last year that have a dense Stiltgrass population. All in all I am very hopeful that I will be able to get it under control. Thanks for asking.

We are currently running some tests using various vinegar dilutions, but I don't know about the potential impact of adding acid to the soil under your fruit trees. I have heard positive results about mowing, but my experience has been that you need to scalp the plants all the way to the ground several times a season to effectively keep it from seeding.

What should we plant in the place of stiltgrass after we pull it? I have about 4 acres in a wetland that has been taken over but any chemicals are a no-no from the Chesapeake Bay people...

    • @TheWoodlandSteward

That really depends on what is already there and what your end goal is. I don't have any experience with your neck of the woods, so I would probably talk to a County Extension Agent for your area. Good luck!

Also wondering the same thing as we have a wet woodland area that we want to control Japanese stiltgrass (and a whole host of other invasives there). We will certainly plants some native understory shrubs, but wondering whether there are some decent native groundcovers that will outcompete the stiltgrass. If you come up with something, let us know! I don't have as big of a space to tackle, but would be very interested to hear what you decide to do and how it works out!

@@kirstensmith4461 I've pulled most of it by hand and I've been sprinkling 1 part annual rye grass mixed with 10 parts peat moss... I dump bags of old native perennial seeds in there too... I figure that combined with hand pulling/weedeating will clear most of it out by next fall.

People can claim this grass is a "problem"...but the truth, is that Japanese Stiltgrass is one of the only plant species that will grow well on our property. We live in the Appalachian mountains and our land is extremely shaded with lots of trees, very rooty soil, tons of clay, it's sloped, and tons of deer to eat everything. All those factors combine to eliminate nearly every plant from growing well on our yard. But stiltgrass THRIVES despite all those factors. So for us, our choice is either A- have a yard of dirt and roots, or B- at least have a fairly attractive grass plant covering our lawn.

    • @chrisderhodes7629

Unfortunately you're spreading an invasive species into quality natural areas around your property, degrading the wider ecosystem beyond your yard.
